08/17/16 - NNHS Newsletter - Blue Skies

“Arithmetic is where the answer is right and everything is nice and you can
look out of the window and see the blue sky - or the answer is wrong and you
have to start over and try again and see how it comes out this time.”

- Carl Sandburg
(06 Jan 1878 – 22 July 1967)

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irving_Berlin:

"Blue Skies" (1926)

Written after his first daughter's birth as a song just for her. In it he distilled his feelings about being married and a father for the first time: "Blue days, all of them gone; nothing but blue skies, from now on."[23] #1 for Ben Selvin with five other hits in 1927 besides being the first song performed by Al Jolson in the first feature sound film, "The Jazz Singer," that same year. In 1946 it returned to the top 10 on the charts with Count Basie and Benny Goodman. In 1978, Willie Nelson made the song a #1 country hit—52 years after it was written.[16]

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Skies_%28song%29

"Blue Skies" is a popular song that was written by Irving Berlin in 1926.

The song was composed in 1926 as a last-minute addition to the Rodgers and Hart musical Betsy. Although the show ran for 39 performances only, "Blue Skies" was an instant success, with audiences on opening night demanding 24 encores of the piece from star Belle Baker.[1] During the final repetition, Ms. Baker forgot her lyrics, prompting Berlin to sing them from his seat in the front row.[2]

In 1927, the music was published and Ben Selvin's recorded version was a #1 hit. That same year, it became one of the first songs to be featured in a talkie, when Al Jolson performed it in The Jazz Singer. Another version of the song was recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra in 1935 [Victor Scroll 25136]. 1946 was also a notable year for the song, with a Bing Crosby/Fred Astaire film taking its title along with two recorded versions by Count Basie and Benny Goodman reaching #8 and #9 on the pop charts, respectively. Crossing genres, Willie Nelson's recording of "Blue Skies" was a #1 country music hit in 1978. It was a major western swing and country standard already in 1939, by Moon Mullican, and in 1962 by Jim Reeves.

"Blue Skies" is one of many popular songs whose lyrics use a "Bluebird of happiness" as a symbol of cheer: "Bluebirds singing a song -- Nothing but bluebirds all day long."

“You may have heard the expression 'mind over matter.' That’s what I would like to talk about—but phrase it a little differently: 'spirit over body.' That is self-mastery.”

OOOH! Thank you, Tina! I like this so very, very much! In fact, I want one for myself. Now. I think I'd like several varieties of marigolds in mine, rather than chrysanthemums. Did I mention now? 'Cause that's like a key word, ya know.

Blue Skies

Words and Music by Irving Berlin, 1926
(11 May 1888 - 22 Sept 1989)

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

[2]
I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it cant be true
I should smile, that's exactly what I do
