08/17/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Blue Skies

“Arithmetic is where the answer is right and everything is nice and you can
look out of the window and see the blue sky - or the answer is wrong and you
have to start over and try again and see how it comes out this time.”

- Carl Sandburg
(06 Jan 1878 – 22 July 1967)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme is being revisited (with but a few changes in the bonus videos) from only one year ago today, partially because I really like it, but primarily because I'm in a big ol' hurry - plus I'm a slacker!

BONUS #1 - - Blue Skies - Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey's Orchestra - C'mon, you had to know I'd give Frank star billing!

BONUS #2 - - Blue Skies - Betty Hutton

BONUS #3 - - Blue Skies - Ella Fitzgerald

BONUS #4 - - Blue Skies - Jim Reeves

BONUS #5 - - Blue Skies - Willie Nelson

Blue Skies" (1926)

Written after his first daughter's birth as a song just for her. In it he distilled his feelings about being married and a father for the first time: "Blue days, all of them gone; nothing but blue skies, from now on."[14] #1 for Ben Selvin with five other hits in 1927, besides being the first song performed by Al Jolson in the first feature sound film, "The Jazz Singer that same year." In 1946 it returned to the top 10 on the charts with Count Basie and Benny Goodman. In 1978, Willie Nelson made the song a #1 country hit — 52 years after it was written.[8]

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - Once again, nothing at all happened - no births, no death, no nuffin'. Can you believe it?!?

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) - 08/05/10 - "Vote for Grace (REPEATED)":

This is my daughter Laura's dog in a contest to be on the cover of a bag of dog food.

Vote every day for Grace. Thanks.

Oh, Laura is your daughter, Norris! Well, that makes it all the more important! When I tried to vote for Grace again today, I noticed the site was trying to pull a switcheroo on me. It tried to persuade me to vote for the wrong Grace!  OH, NO!

That's why I've included the link to all the candidates named Grace, along with the image of The Real Grace, lest there be any confusion. As y'all can see, she's a Weimaraner from Richmond.

Vote early, and vote often - or at least cast your allotted daily vote!

From John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - 08/10/10 - "Hi Carol":

Hi Carol - I have not been in touch lately but I made some photos today on the Peninsula, and I thought you might like to see some of them.

This is all that remains of BB Park (sigh).

Hope you are well and happy!

John Darlin', where have you been?!? I've missed you!

Thanks for this beautiful - and melancholy - image! Now when I go to sleep tonight I'll dream of Buckroe, and it'll all be there in its fifties / sixties glory, restored every whit, just as we all remember it!

From Dale Parsons ('48) of VA - 08/10/10 - "Don't Bungee Jump Naked.":

A very clean and funny video I thought all would enjoy performed by Miss North Carolina of 1963.  Enjoy.

Here's a laugh for you. Her comedic focus is for seniors. She is HILARIOUS . . . . and her humor is clean! She calls her husband "left brain". . . . so you'll know who she is talking about! She was Miss North Carolina in 1963.

   WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Dale!

From George Helliesen ('61) of MI - 08/10/10 - "YOU Got to hear her sing!!":

You've got to hear this little girl sing!!!

Rhema Marvanne was born 9/15/02, lost her mother, Wendi Marvanne Voraritskul, to ovarian cancer on November 8, 2008. Rhema lives in Carrollton, TX and attends The Branch Church (Vista Ridge Campus). This video was done in Texas around McKinney & Dallas where she lives. Her mother had died just a few months before she put this together.
Just sit back and be amazed!!!

   WOWZERONI!!! Thanks, George!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 08/11/10 - "FYI - The new CPR":

Some of you are up on the latest in CPR, but I am sending this to everyone so that you can share it with others. You don't have to take a class to save a life. Of course, taking a class on First Aid and CPR is never a waste of time.
God bless you!

Very good information.

This short video will show you exactly what to do if someone near you collapses and is presumably having a heart attack. You could save a life, or a friend/loved one you share this video with could save yours one day. Please pass it around. This is the best demonstration I’ve seen, and the simplest explanation.

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 08/11/10 - "Downtown Newport News Book Is Published by our OWN Bill Fox":

Bill Fox (’61 WHS) has published a book about Downtown Newport News.    Fred Mays (’60 NNHS) also gave him some photos to use in his booklet.

For book signing, Bill will be at Costco on Saturday, 14 Aug 1:00 to 3:00 - NN Visitor Center on 8/28 from 10:00 to 1:00.

   Dear Karrin,

I haven't heard from you in a while. My book came out on July 26 and is available at local bookstores, Walgreen's, Hidenwood Pharmacy, NN Visitors Center, etc. It is also available from  or by calling 888-313-2665. Price is $21.99. It turned out well and I am grateful to all those who helped and contributed photos and other material.

Thanks, Karrin! The bad news is that I was still out of town last week and not able to announce the book signing, but the good news is that we have mentioned Bill's awesome new book a couple of times recently, and he is now one of our subscribers!

From Richard Dawes (NNHS / HHS - '62) of VA - 08/11/10 - "ten year old - what a voice": - Jackie Evancho

more below.

WOWZERONI!!! Thanks, Dicky!

From the Head Cheerleader of 1958, Evelyn Fryer Fish of TX - 08/12/10 - "You've Got to see this Golfer!":

The most touching video that I have ever received.

A bit long, but worth the time.

This is about the most amazing thing I have seen this year. Yes, it is about a golfer but it is so much more than that.... It is why it is always enjoyable to get up in the morning. You never know when you are going to see something truly amazing that resonates for a long while.... and believe me it is worth watching!

Thanks, Ev! Amazing is the word!

From John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - 08/12/10 - "Stop the presses!":

Ok, Carol - so I haven't been around for a while. Well, I'm trying to catch up. So far I'm all the way up to March 23rd 'Baby Elephant Walk.'

But, someone said this was August already.

At the rate I'm reading the NL's you will be into 2011 before I catch up.

But ... all is not lost - I figgur that if you stopped posting NL's right now I could ...

Well, just think about it, wontcha? Think of all the rest & recreation you could get!

Yur #1 fan - John London

Behold! What is a bell? A bell is that which sounds, far, and high ... It will echo far and wide like the peal of thunder but under utmost purity. And evil men, hearing the bell, will be saved.

John Darlin', you are such a hoot! I'll tell you what - last week while I was gone to Southeast Missouri should give you a break in catching up - and welcome back!

I just checked your new images on Flickr - they're gorgeous! Nice work!

From Larry Spigel ('62) of VA - 08/16/10:

Wow! The picture of the golf team sure brings back some memories! I am fifth from the left, and although I was never a great golfer, I always enjoyed having the opportunity to play at NNHS!

Thanks again for including me on your list. It's hard to believe how fast the years have passed. I will never forget those wonderful high school days at NNHS. The students, the
faculty, and the spirit were truly outstanding! I can attribute my personal success to my magnificent NNHS teachers who prepared me for the University of Richmond and the Marshall/Wythe School of Law at William and Mary. Now I am retired
and enjoy every moment I spend with by beautiful grandchildren!
1962 Anchor, p. 121

Take care,

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Larry! WOW, retired... I knew you were an attorney, but I tend to think of all of us here as being 18.  I find it difficult enough to age them forward to 30, let alone to retirement age!

   Enjoy those grandbabies!

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 08/16/10 - "RE: Scans of Senior pix from Anchor?":

Thanks, Carol.
Your dedication to maintaining the history of NNHS is much appreciated.
Joe Drewry

Thank you so much, Joe! I do give it my best shot.  As I've said for years, I'm planning to have my tombstone inscribed, "Pore thang - she tried!"

From ArcaMax Jokes - 08/16/10:

Creepy Castle

A young American tourist went on a guided tour of a creepy old castle. At the end of the tour the guide asked her how she enjoyed it. She admitted to being a bit worried about seeing a ghost in some of the dark cobwebby rooms and passages.

"Don't worry" said the guide, "I've never seen a ghost all the time I've been here."

"How long is that?" asked the girl.

"About three hundred years."

Blue Skies

Words and Music by Irving Berlin, 1926
(11 May 1888 - 22 Sept 1989)

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore

Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Do I see

Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly

Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on

I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it cant be true
I should smile, that's exactly what I do
