Ronnie was thrilled to know he was about to become a grandfather. He is also survived by his parents, Penn and Hilda Snapp, also of Newport News; his two sisters, Connie Snapp DeBord, and Bonnie Snapp Blount, and their families. Ronnie was much loved by the large extended family he leaves behind, including his in-laws, Cmdr. Ronnie Snapp

Ronnie had many passions in life, his family and friends, baseball and music. After playing the game all through school, he started coaching his sons at Warwick Little League and continued coaching there for over 10 years. His greatest joy was nurturing young boys into young men of character and sportsmanship. His familiar presence at their games will be sorely missed. Ronnie was just beginning to enjoy his retirement from Verizon, after 34 years of dedicated service.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News. A funeral service will be held
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, with a brief graveside ceremony following at Peninsula Memorial Park. The family will host friends at their home following the graveside ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Michael Snapp Memorial Scholarship at Virginia Wesleyan College, 1584 Wesleyan Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502 (757) 455-3242. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at http://www.dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Trish and Adam,
I am so sorry for your loss. Trish, I went to Newport News High School with Ronnie and we were friends. I remember spending the night with him as kids when he lived in Wythe. After NNHS I ran into Ronnie in my neighborhood while he was working. He was the same old Ronnie, friendly and easy-going. I also had the occasion to see you guys at baseball games. My wife's nephew, Steven, played ball with your sons. I will be thinking of you and I will always remember Ronnie as one of the good guys.

Every time I ever hear Jethro Tull music, I smile. It always reminds me of Ronnie Snapp and the wonderful times of my college youth. It just felt good to know that somewhere out there (even if you hadn't seen him for years) was this wonderful positive human being. He knew how to make everyone feel good about themselves. The world just seems a little dimmer today with the loss of "Snapp". My heartfelt condolences to Trish and Adam.

Dearest Penn, Hilda, Connie, Bonnie, Trish, Adam, There are no words to convey the anguish and sorrow that each of you, along with all who knew Ronnie, must feel. I can still see that little smile that Ronnie used to have when we would all be together for Christmas and the other holidays, way back in the past. As others have said, cherish the happy times and memories. My love to each of you, Bonnie

I can still picture Ronnie in the summer of 1965, big smile, blond hair and looks sort of like the older brother on "The Wonder Years." He was the (left-handed starting) pitcher and my older brother, Willie, was the catcher in the Major Little League (ages 11-12) baseball state championship game for the Newport News American All-Stars.

They lost that state title game, but I know those four days in the tournament, staying at the Norfolk Naval Amphibious Base, were among the best times they had as kids. Kids from the East End of Newport News didn't have travel-ball adventures like that very much in those days.

Didn't see Ronnie much after that until I ran into him when his kid was playing ball at Woodside and I was covering a game at Bethel for the Daily Press earlier this decade.

He still had that big smile and friendliness that made him so easy to talk to it seemed like yesterday, not somewhere around 35 years, since I'd seen him. He had a big heart that I'm sure was broken in two over his son's tragedy.

It's hard not to think of that song "Tears in Heaven" tonight, and the blessing that he and Michael are together.

Trish, Adam, Emily, Hilda & Penn, Connie & David and girls and Bonnie & Ron and boys ----- As I try to sort out words to send to you - I think back to our family reunion in June. As I was taking pictures I took one of Ronnie and said to him how glad I was that he came and then reminded him, as I had told him before, how I thought he resembled John Denver. He just laughed and said that he had been told that before (maybe only from Betty and me?). I don't know what words could possibly bring you comfort right now but I know you have the faith that God will bring you through yet another family loss. We don't understand why things happen as they do - we just have to turn it over to God! Know that Gary and my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time of sorrow.

To All of the Snapp Family,

I was so sorry to learn the news about Ronnie the hard way, which was by calling him up today the 18th after sending him several emails over the weekend and have Trisha answer the phone with the news. Ronnie and I reconnected 6 months ago after all the years apart since High School except for a poker game or two when I'd pass through town. What I will always remember about Snapper will be his love of life, his smile and lightning speed in whatever sport he chose to play. Those early morning surfing trips to Nags and VA Beach, the music and long discussions at night, the cruises to the Lions bridge and Mariners' Museum, shooting basketball, foosball and water skiing. When something like this happens, it all just comes back to you and you remember it all. As everyone moves forward through this difficult time, my prayers are with the family and all his friends he has touched one way or another by his life. I know Ronnie is at peace.

Servant of God, Well Done!

Words by Charles Wesley (28 Dec 1707 - 29 Mar 1788)
Music by George J. Elvey (27 Mar 1816 - 9 Dec 1893)

(The Methodist Hymnal, 1966, #288)

Wesley wrote this hymn in 1770 on the occasion of the death of clergyman George White.
Elvey's tune, "Diademata", has been set to several other hymns, notably "Crown Him with Many Thorns" and "Soldiers of Christ, Arise".

 Servant of God, well done!
Thy glorious warfare’s past;
The battle’s fought, the race is won,
And thou art crowned at last.

With saints enthroned on high,
Thou dost thy Lord proclaim,
And still to God salvation cry,
Salvation to the Lamb!

O happy, happy soul!
In ecstasies of praise,
Long as eternal ages roll,
Thou seest Thy Savior’s face.

Redeemed from earth and pain,
Ah! when shall we ascend,
And all in Jesus’ presence reign
With our translated friend?
