08/16/08 - NNHS Newsletter - All Alone Am I

“Loneliness is never more cruel than when it is felt in close propinquity
with someone who has ceased to communicate.”

- Germaine Greer

(b. 29 Jan 1939)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This Newsletter theme was first used three years ago today, one of the first issues following the restoration of my computer systems after a three month non-voluntary hiatus:

ALERT:

From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 08/15/08, 10:14 PM - "  Lydia Powell Mugler's husband Charley died today, 8/15/08":

Charley died about 6pm this evening, 8/15/08.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.  I expect the obituary to be in Sunday's Daily Press and I will circulate it when available.

Lydia is doing well under the circumstances.  She and the immediate family have been with Charley at the Hospice facility since he was transferred there from the Williamsburg hospital.

I just talked to Lydia and she expressed thanks for all the cards and support from friends and classmates.

Oh, Joe, I'm so sorry to hear this! Even though it was not unexpected, it is nevertheless heartrending. Please extend our love and condolences to Lydia.

From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 08/11/08 (but just found this morning!) - "RE: OVARIAN CANCER TEST (CA-125)":

Mea Culpa!! Thanks to      Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA) for checking out what Snopes says -- shoulda done so myself before I forwarded the info!!

However, what Snopes has to say does NOT change my mind by one iota. I would still have mailed that email to you, and here's why:

First off, having had prostate cancer myself 10 years ago, I reacted to this subject emotionally, thinking from the way the email was written that the CA-125 test shows something equivalent to the male's PSA levels. What little I've read on the subject seems to indicate this is so. Maybe so, maybe no. So I didn't bother to check Snopes. (Didn't really care, in this case.)

But, it's interesting that the PSA test itself has likewise come under fire by many doctors and other experts in the last decade or two, claiming that it, too, gives too many false positives and negatives to even be of value, just as Snopes implies about the CA-125 test.

So my VEHEMENT answer to those who put it down: I wouldn't be alive now if it weren't for the early detection given by the "faulty" PSA test. I know several other men in the same boat.

Matter of fact, if you don't discover the cancer until you're symptomatic, you're probably dead already. It's just a matter of how quickly your final demise will be.

To me the real key to the value either of these tests is the competency of your physician. Fortunately mine used the early warning to order up other tests, which confirmed the original finding, which led to a biopsy, yada, yada, yada. He didn't simply try to pressure me into surgery, or anything. His approach was: let's investigate further. Hopefully any sensible Doc would do the same.

And that's my response to what Snopes has to say about CA-125 -- use it as a tool. I get the impression that the CA-125 test, too, can be used as an indicator to investigate further.

IMHO, you ladies should discuss the possibilities with your physician, not just simply reject it because of someone's or some website's opinion. Check it out further for yourself. Why? Because there are several other qualified experts with opinions directly opposite of Snopes and their experts on this matter.

To simply reject a possibly life-saving test because it's controversial is putting your life at risk. A controversial test saved mine!

So my original email/recommendation stands, in spite of Snopes!!

As I said at the start, mainly since I consider this a life and death matter (which it is, in fact), I can get a little emotional on this subject (which I have proven, have I not?).

And herewith, I end my rant!!

Thank you so much, Ronnie! I appreciate hearing "the rest of the story" - and I'm mighty glad you and your physician made the right choice in your case!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/15/08 - "The Chamberlin":

There has begun locally a print and TV/Radio advertising campaign for The Chamberlin. It seems that it is now open for occupancy.

Here is the web site: http://www.historicchamberlin.com/index.aspx

When you consider all that is included, the pricing isn't so bad - and there is always that view.

From Tina Crowder Adderholdt ('65) of VA - 08/15/08 - "moving":

Carol, just to let you and the Typhoon family know that as of Aug. 27 my husband Mike (Adderholdt - Hampton HS - '68) and I will be living in the Outer Banks of NC.  After more than 6 years of planning, I finally sold my house here in NN, and that was the last hurdle that we needed to jump over before we made our move.  We went to the Outer Banks last weekend and bought our beach cottage and started moving things today.

My email address will still remain the same, so please continue to keep both of us in the loop.

And one last note, thank you again for the wonderful job that you continue to do for all of us, not only those that went to NNHS but all others, too.

May His Blessings continue to keep all of us safe and kind to one another.

Mike and Tina Adderholdt

WOWZERS! Congratulations on your move, Tina - and thank you!

All Alone Am I

(Brenda Lee)

All alone am I ever since your goodbye
All alone with just a beat of my heart
People all around but I don't hear a sound
Just the lonely beating of my heart
No use in holding other hands
For I'd be holding only emptiness
No use in kissing other lips
For I'd be thinking just of your caress

All alone am I ever since your goodbye
All alone with just a beat of my heart
People all around but I don't hear a sound
Just the lonely beating of my heart

No other voice can say the words
My heart must hear to ever sing again
The words you used to whisper low
No other love can ever bring again.

All alone am I ever since your goodbye
All alone with just a beat of my heart
People all around but I don't hear a sound
Just the lonely beating of my heart.
