Besame Mucho

"Give me a kisse, and to that kisse a score;
Then to that twenty, adde a hundred more;
A thousand to that hundred; so kisse on,
To make that thousand up a million;
Treble that million, and when that is done,
Let's kisse afresh, as when we first begun."

- Robert Herrick, "To Anthea (III)"
(1591-1674)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Well, well ........

I think that you will soon be awash in checks and money orders from all of those who love you and could not stand by idly in your hour of need.

Indeed, it is quite possible that you may receive a good deal more than you need........

Ummmm, I don't understand.......What??  Ummm, oh, my goodness.......

But the phone calls and emails are starting to arrive, and - oh, my goodness!  I'm not sure what's going on, but I sense that several of y'all are networking something or other...... Bless your sweet hearts!

Thank you so very much, Brown Eyes!  (I still think there's too much emotion involved here to try to squeeze it into two little words....)

From Janice McCain Rose ('65) of VA - 08/14/06:

Dear Carol.....

I bank online...and today I sent you a check....some people have said that the envelope looks like a bill or junk mail.....don't fall into that category.....open up everything you receive!!! You know how much I enjoy the NNHS site.....and I hope that everyone that feels the way I do will do their part in helping you out at this time. Remember that we all depend on you to help keep us connected....so anything we can do to help you, all you have to do is ASK......

love, Janice

Oh, my, Janice!  Thank you so much!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/14/06:

Hi, Carol:

Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA made my day with that nice compliment. I suppose you will have to count me in as one of your "Underwriters" each month, for I sure wouldn't want to miss hearing from Linda May, and the rest of the "Typhoon Family."

She cracked me up with the reason she could not whistle, and it reminded me of a joke I heard last evening.

Coach Les Steckel, veteran NFL Coach, and former Offensive Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers spoke at our evening service at our church, and told a joke about our pastor, Ken Whitten. As the story goes, Ken was visiting a rather elderly lady in a nursing home. During the visit, he reached over to a bowl of peanuts sitting on the table in her room. As then he reached again, and gathered a few more peanuts. By the time the visit was over, he had eaten all of the peanuts. Realizing he had eaten them all, he apologized to her, and she replied that it was quite OK, for they would only get stale sitting there in the bowl. She explained that she was unable to eat the peanuts after she had sucked off all the chocolate.
They had a lot of fun with that one and the crowd enjoyed the bantering among friends.

Les Steckel

For those interested in sports, Coach Les Steckel moved on to become President of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and resides in Kansas City, KS. When the Bucs let Coach Dungy go, and he went to Indianapolis, Les too the helm of FCA, and their website is: http://www.fca.org/
He has just written a book, "One Yard Short, turning your defeats into victories" by Thomas Nelson Publishers.

The story reminded me of Coach J.C. Range telling the TYPHOON Basketball teams that he licked each and every one of his Luden Cough Drops and put them back in the carton, just so no one was tempted to help themselves during a game when they were lying around the bench. He caught a few young TYPHOON off guard with that announcement, since they had been helping themselves to his cough drops. It sure put a stop to the "borrowing" without permission.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

  WILD GIGGLES!!!  Thanks, Sweet Adonis!

Thank you, Sweet Lady!   There seem to be a lot of these tears circulating........

From Gloria Woolard Price (Hampton HS - '65) of FL - 08/14/06:

Regarding your message:

"I was thinking perhaps of asking for a voluntary board of underwriters, a panel who could commit to such a monthly fee, which would allow me to not panic.  The problem is, they should receive something special for their donations, a special privilege - something or other, and I've not been able to figure out what that might be."

Dear, dear Carol, we do receive "something special" every time we open up a newsletter so lovingly put together by you.  Thanks again!  And if you run into "trouble" next month, just holler!

Oh, my goodness, Lady! What sweet things you say!

  Thank you so much!

I seem to be having difficulty seeing the screen.  Maybe I'm just a big ol' crybaby......

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 08/14/06 - "Love!":

All you need is love! A check is on it's way! With tears in my eyes, I feel the LOVE flowing your way! With the situation in this world today, this gives me more pleasure than I can describe in writing. Just wanted to share that with you. Know that we do love you so, Miss Carol, and yes, we all do know that you love us too!

After all, we will always have Paris.

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII - 08/15
/06 - "Dear Carol, People love to be asked for voluntary Contributions to help out.":

Dear Carol,

I am so happy that you told everyone that you were having financial difficulties, Otherwise no one could offer to help out. People love to be asked for voluntary contributions after they know what the situation is. My modest donation is on its way, Today is Aug. 15th and I mailed it yesterday. The last time I looked you had nearly 50,000 hits on your website. I hope the donations pour in.

They're starting to pour in already.  As a matter of fact, three checks arrived which have enabled me to pay the rent, the electric bill, the internet/phone/cable bill, the car insurance, the water bill (in full!), and to buy my hypertension and asthma medications.  And this brings tears to our eyes every time we think about it.  I still think I'm lost in a movie script somewhere, but I suppose that's only appropriate.  The past six years have all been an incredible fantasy journey anyway.

I look forward to your newsletters, There are so many friendly people involved and I know you work your "BUNS" off putting your newsletter out with all those many links.

That's true, Herbie.  I just wish my BUNS understood that, and would actually go away!

I  appreciate your love of the Military, Especially the Marine Corps in their Dress Blues of which I am a retired member, "SEMPER FI", which means "ALWAYS FAITHFUL" and you are an "HONORARY MARINE".

I do love being an Honorary Marine!

God Bless you, Dear Carol !!!!!

Thank you so much, Herbie Darlin'!

Now on a lighter subject, I have enclosed a picture of three Fishing Sweethearts that my fishing buddy Walt sent to me. Below is my response to him. Walt and I spent many, many hours out in His or My boat fishing for Salmon on Lake Michigan. As I was looking at the picture, I wondered which one of the three Sweethearts    "Linda May" (Bond Crayton - '66 - of VA) might look like, And I also wondered if She Liked to Fish ???

ZZZZZZZZ  Wake up, Dear Carol, the long story is over, I know my long stories tend to put you in slumber land, so I will save some for later.

Your Friend, Herbie

Walt,

Fix me up with the one on the left. She's just my type. She is a bit young but who cares, she loves to fish.

Herb

WILD GIGGLES!!!  Thanks, Sweetie!   And you know perfectly well you never bore me!

From Bob Allen ('51) of VA - 08/14/06:

I noticed this on your NNHS newsletter...a coincidence worth noting: my class, NNHS 1951 will also be having a reunion at same location...Point Plaza...same night...  55 years... I have not posted it here as there does not seem to be a lot of interest from '51 on your site.

I will be looking for the other class (NNHS 1964) while we are there... an encounter may turn out kinda neat.

Dr. Bob Allen, (retired dentist)  NNHS '51 Class vice-president...co-chair ...reunion committee.

WOWZERS!  How fun!  Actually, though, while they'll be staying at the Point Plaza, they'll be holding their 60th Birthday Party itself elsewhere:

The 60th Birthday Celebration
for Members of the NNHS Class of 1964

will be held
on Saturday, October 14, 2006, 7:00 - 11:00 PM at Spirit Events,
12672 Patrick Henry Drive, Newport News, VA 23602.

And if you change your mind about the free publicity, just let me know.  Anyone Googling NNHS Reunions is sure to be able to find us, and it may bring in one or two for you.

   Thanks, Bob!

From Joanne Kates Roos of VA - 08/15/06:

Dear Carol -

I thought you might like to see the Daily Press Sunday, August 13, 2006 and Monday, August 14, 2006.  A beginning series entitled "They dare to dream" -   Who Built?  A special look at local innovation from the past century and more.  Sunday's story was on Collis  P. Huntington and Monday's story was on my mother, Rena Nachman Kates.  It would be neat to put this with your Nachman's Dept. Store site.

Love your web site!

Sincerely, Joanne Kates Roos

Joanne!  How nice to hear from you!  I've been gone much of today, but I shall indeed try to access this information early in the morning and add it to that page.  It sounds invaluable!  Thanks for letting us know!   And I'm delighted that such a story was written.  One simply cannot think of Newport News without thinking of Nachman's!

From Sheila Smith Moler ('64) of FL - 08/15/06:

Carol:

I thought you would appreciate this.............

Sheila Moler '65

Oh, my goodness, Lady!  I've been tearing up and choking up and having tears roll down my cheeks all week (for one reason or another), but this time you can add great heaving sobs to all that!  This was so beautiful, and just what I needed to see at this moment.  Thanks so very much, Sheila!

From Danny Coleman ('63) of NC - 08/15/06:

Hi, Girl.

I've been away from home a couple weeks so I missed the last few newsletters. I'm sending you a few bucks tomorrow to help out. Shoot, just figure out ahead of time what you'll be needing, then post it and let the chips fall where they might. It'll work out just fine.

Danny

Bless your sweet heart, Danny!   I appreciate that!  Thank you so much!

  From Harron Ellenson ('65) of MA - 08/15/06 - "NNHS 65 website":

I seem to have been dropped from the email list and when I went on the site the newsletters wouldn't come up.

Very strange!

Can you put me back on the list?

Hope you are doing well.

Thanks,

Harron

YOWZERONI!!!  I checked my addies, and the problem was that I was adding an "E" to yours where none belonged.   How that happened, I've no idea, but I've corrected it now, so you should get the next announcement...

I cannot understand why you're not able to connect to the newsletters; all looks well on this end.....

It's so good to hear from you, Harron!  I hope you're happy and well!

From Billy Fitzgerald ('58) of VA - 08/15/06 - "Jackson School":

Carol,

I was in Jackson Academy today; it's part of what is left of Jackson School. They have found some old PTA minutes from the 40’s and 50’s.

They will have their students do a project of researching the schools history. If anyone went there, and has pictures or anything from the school, it would be great if they would forward them to the school.

Thanks, Billy Fitzgerald

   EXCELLENT!!!  Thanks, Billy!

   "Anyone?  Anyone?"

Besame Mucho

Lyrics by Pascal Sevran, Serge Lebrail
Original music by Consuelo Velázquez Torres Ortiz
Original lyrics by Enrique Granados,
Consuelo Velázquez Torres Ortiz

(Dean Martin)

Besame, besame mucho.
Each time I cling to your kiss I hear music divine.
Besame, besame mucho.
Hold me, my darling, and say that you'll always be mine.

This joy is something new, my arms enfolding you.
Never knew this thrill before.
Whoever thought I'd be holding you close to me
Whispering, "It's you I adore"?

Dearest one, if you should leave me,
Each little dream would take wings and my life would be through.
Besame, besame mucho.
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true.

Besame, besame mucho.
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true
