Jerry and I were good friends, as I was his older brother's (Bob) best friend during our high school years. Jerry had a great sense of humor and was nearly always smiling as we bantered back and forth in a humorous way. We spent many a day on the beach near Stuart Gardens with Bob and the rest of the East End gang. He will be truly missed by all who knew Jerry. Fair winds and following seas to you, my friend.

Harry and I dearly loved Jimmy, he was the sweetest and kindest man we've ever known. You are all in our prayers. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/guestbooks/dailypress/guestbook.aspx?n=james-nelms&pid=168424497&cid=full#sthash.eYd8EQ0l.dpuf

Jerry and I were best friends from the time we met at about five or six years old. I still remember the day we got to know each other. He had tagged along with his big brother, Bob, who had walked to our house to visit my big brother, Jack. Jerry and I sat on the ground under the bay window of my parents bedroom, like a hideaway, and that's when we discovered we were born on the same day. We were very close friends from that day all through Newport News High School days, and I always regretted that we drifted apart a few years after graduation. We did get together a couple of years ago for lunch at Awful Arthur's and reminisced old times. I was sorry to hear of his passing and our thoughts are with his family.

From Doug Nelson ('64) of VA - 08/13/18 (but only just discovered on 08/19/18) - "Re: Jerry Schweida":

My brother Lloyd ('61 - of VA) emailed me of Jerry's death yesterday. He was a friend of Lloyd's and I always liked him. I used to play sandlot football with Lloyd and Jerry before we were in high school. I was a underweight, scrawny little kid. But I liked to play football. I would try with all my might to tackle Jerry. And, as I remember, I actually did rarely. Perhaps he was being kind. I remember being sent through the air trying to tackle him. I was lucky he didn't kill me.

The last time I saw Jerry was at the 1996 NNHS reunion event in Saunders Stadium. I went to shake his hand. But I am not sure he knew who I was.

Doug Nelson

Thank you so much for this remembrance, Doug! I'm sorry I missed it before...

Morning Has Broken
Words: Eleanor Farjeon
Music: Traditional Gaelic

1. Morning has broken like the first morning;
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word!

2. Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven,
Like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.

3. Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning,
Born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation; praise ev'ry morning,
God's recreation of the new day!
