Summer in the City

"Reclusive? The inner city will secure your privacy
better than any desert cave."

-  Mason Cooley
(1927 - 25 July 2002)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's theme comes to you at the suggestion of    Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC - 07/26/07:

..... Later: .....  'Summer in the City', Lovin' Spoonful.....

This is another one of my favorites! It reminds me of the summer of 1966, which primarily I spent in Richmond. It was a very fun time for me. Thanks, Sepi!

And if you'd like to watch it in an original performance, looky here:

NOTE:

  From Me ('65) of NC - 08/02/07:

While my #6 son,       Dale (Harty - Hillsboro High, IL/American School, IL - '02) of VA, was home for the past few days, at my request (and delaying his departure a bit), he graciously switched a couple of my systems for me.  In the long run this is going to greatly simplify my life and save me an incredible amount of time.  But at this point in my life I'm a slow learner, and will need a little period of time to adapt to the new ways.

The next two or three (or more) regular Newsletters will have shifted content as I do this.  Some bits and pieces you might never suspect are literally taking me hours to process.  While some older items may finally be making an appearance, some new things may be delayed a bit.  Don't worry if you don't see something you just sent me.

And try not to search for any logic in what does appear.   SHHH - I'm "thinking"!

BIRTHDAYS - TODAY AND UPCOMING:

Happy Birthday today to  The United States Coast Guard (1790). Tomorrow,   Frank Friedland ('60) of VA will be celebrating a milestone birthday, and    Susan Whitcomb Harlin ('72) of TX will light those candles on Monday!

Congratulations and Many Happy Returns to One and All!

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Happy-Birthday.html

Y'all be sure to take a look at that page.  How are we going to wish you a happy birthday (or in the case of my coo-coo brain, forget to wish you a happy birthday) if we don't know when it is?!?  Thanks!

THIS IS TODAY!!! Y'all have a great time - and send us pictures!

Carol:

..... Recently, I created the attached, for use by a Menchville High School business class - who was/is developing a web site about Hilton Village businesses. I know it's too long for insertion in one of your newsletters, but you may find it interesting, and worthy of being referenced.

Dear Carol,

I thought you might like to see this article written by
Bill Lee of the Warwick High School Class of 1954 that my sister, Fay Salmon Clark (WHS), sent me. It is very endearing and brings back fond memories. I'm sure many WHS alums will love it too.

Fondly,

From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA to Janice Pratt McGrew (Hampton HS - '67) of VA - 08/01/07 - "Clyde Pratt":

Hi Janice,

I was looking at the latest pictures of the old Car Barns (CRT garages). That's what my parents used to refer to them as. My uncle Frank Gardner used to drive one of those big red and white mules and I would go for a ride with him when I was a kid. I didn't know that your dad, Clyde, drove one. Knew him for many years but never knew that. Thanks for sharing that information.

Thanks, Frank! I posted your note on that page (and did a slight page redesign while I was there):

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 08/01/07 - "Cherokee Right of Passage":

Cherokee Right of Passage

Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?

His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone.

He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN. He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must come into manhood on his own.

The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man!

Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

We, too, are never alone. Even when we don't know it, our Heavenly Father is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him.

   Thanks, Shari!

From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 08/01/07 - "Fresh Fruit Ice Cream Company":

Carol,

Thanks to    Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54 - of NC) who identified the ice cream shop in Hilton and gave the history. I can remember going in there and the white fans over head spinning and moving around the luscious smell of fresh cream and fruit. I always ordered the orange ice flavor......yummy!!!!! Couldn't find that flavor any where else that I knew of. Bank of America is on the site where it used to be.

Thanks again, Frank! I added your new comment to that page:

    From Dave Arnold ('65) of AV - 08/01/07 - "  Coach Nuttycombe":

Carol,

Had the opportunity to attend the Peninsula Sports Club recognition dinner tonight for Coach Nuttycombe.  He thought he was there to be the speaker rather than to be recognized.  Several of the Typhoon were there including    Jerry ('65) and   Judy (Phillips - '66) Allen,    Chuck and Marilyn (Payne) Springfield (both '66),   Mickey Marcella ('54), and   Skip Wood ('65 - of NC).  Horace Underwood ('61) is President of the PSC and served as master of ceremonies.  It was nice to see Coach recognized as a person who influenced so many young people over the years.

Dave Arnold

Thank you, Dave!   Edna Whitcomb Harrison ('65) of VA sent me a nice collection of images from the night's proceedings. That's one of the very many things on my to-do list.

   From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 08/02/07 - "Bill Carwile":

(Bill Carwile is a) 1964 Graduate of HHS. Bill worked with his dad and ran Merrimac Motors at the corner of Kecoughtan Road and LaSalle Avenue.

This comes from Cheryl Gear Greasham HHS 64:

Please put Bill Carwile on your prayer list. He has been in the hospital since July 6 with complications from diabetes. Debbie said he is showing much improvement but has a long way to go. If you want to send a card their address is:

409 Muirfield, Smithfield, VA 23430

Thank you, Frank - and Cheryl. We'll certainly keep Bill in our prayers.  A card shower would be nice, too.....

  From Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC - 08/02/07 - "Dave Spriggs: A Question ? ":

Carol...

I have a question for
Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA), and anyone else that might know.  Last week on our trip to McLean, Va. we visited my mom-in-law at Arleigh Burke Pavilion.  Now I know he was a famous Admiral in the Navy, but no one seemed to know what he was famous for.  Not even my father-in-law, who was a Navy fighter pilot in Korea and Vietnam, after that he was a test pilot...A Graduate of the Academy about 60 years ago, and bless him, he didn't know either, or maybe he couldn't remember!  Not even the folks that worked there really knew except to say, "Why, he was a very famous Admiral!"

Well....Duhhhhhhh!  His picture and his wife's picture blanketed the walls.  Her name was Roberta Burke, and apparently she was well known for something other than being his wife.  Charities perhaps?  No one seemed to know that either. All I really remember about his pictures are mainly his eyes...not the gentle eyes of our sweet   Herb Hice, but the eyes of some one that was all about himself. Sorry if I offend any one, he could have been one of the nicest guys that rode the seas.  Capt. Dad (ret.) just knows about jets and how to push them through the air, NASA, and rockets and astronauts, his favorite subjects, and for your own good don't get him started with his stories....please.  I would appreciate any information.  The folks in residence there are Alzheimer's patients and are unable to help me.

Thank you in advance.

Sepi Prichard a.k.a. "Dimples"

   Thanks, Sepi! Let's find out!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/03/07 - "Admiral Arleigh Burke, USN (Ret); USNA Class of 1923":

OK, I could write volumes about this member of the Navy Pantheon, but it has already been done.

Have a look here:  http://www.history.navy.mil/bios/burke_arleigh.htm

Also, there is a large entry on Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arleigh_Burke

Here is his official Navy obituary:  http://www.navy.mil/navydata/people/cno/burke/burkobit.txt

Here is a photo of his grave marker at the Naval Academy cemetery in Annapolis. Note his preferred honorific: "SAILOR".

Thank you, Captain! Nobody does it better!

Summer in the City

- Mark Sebastian

(The Lovin' Spoonful, 1966)

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city

All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright

And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
