One Summer Night

“Oh, the summer night
Has a smile of light
And she sits on a sapphire throne.

Bryan Waller Procter (a.k.a. Barry Cornwall)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

From Sherry Hensel Huycke ('69) of VA - 07/30/14, 3:06 AM - "I was catching up on the newsletters...":

Hi Carol,

Many thanks again for all of the hard work and innovative posting you do for us on the website.

I was looking through all of the newsletters for the obits of any of my mother’s classmates from February and June 1939. Since my 45th reunion is in October, it dawned on me that it’s momma’s 75th reunion year! I’m sure there must still be a few left from her class.

Momma will be 92 on September 16th. She still owns her home on 72nd Street where I grew up, but has been living with us for the past 18 months when she broke her hip and pelvis. She wants to go home of course, but there is no way she can ever live alone again, and I’ve sort of said that to her, but it’s heartbreaking to think about having to TELL her that…

Her sister,
Bea (Betsy) Goodson Covert,     Harry,     Norm, and    Rachel’s mother, broke HER hip about 6 weeks ago and is now in a convalescent center in the Boston area where she had been living with Rachel and her husband. If she lives until November, she will be 95. She was in the class of ’36!

Our cousin
Catherine "Tootsie" Nash Leggette from the February class of ‘39 just passed away this past January. You do have it listed. If you want to, you could list us as her cousins. Sherry Hensel, Class of ’69 and    Christine “Tina” Hensel, class of June ’39. No worry if you don’t list us however!!

Here is the reason I put “High Importance” to my email! I was wondering if you might have a list of the class of ’39? I had momma’s book from her 50th reunion but can’t find it right now. I would love to see if there are any more living classmates and if they are in the area, I thought I’d see if I could put something together for their 75th reunion. Any info you have or could point me to someone who could help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I noticed when I read about my friend’s mother’s obit,
Kathleen Sherwood, that you have listed Barbara as her daughter, but her sister Rhonda should also be listed. Rhonda graduated with me in ’69. They lived behind us, across a big ditch that Rhonda and I would jump over to get to each other’s houses! Great memories…

Rhonda Cheryl Sherwood Blackburn (’69), Daleville, VA.

Kathleen Sherwood, mother of Barbara Sherwood Brickner ('64) of VA, passed away in Daleville (she was living with Rhonda when she died), on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the age of 84.

Thanks so much for your help and your work! Hope you’re having a great summer.

Sherry Hensel Garcia Huycke “Hike” … cousin of Harry, Norm, Rachel, and Faye (D) Covert, and
Cecilia Davis ‘ 65, and niece of Carl and Margaret Goodson (I think class of ’51 or ’52), and Myra Goodson, class of '55; she’s about 75 now!

   Thank you so much, Sherry!

I don't own a June '39 Beacon, but there are 132 members of the Class of February 1939 pictured in their yearbook. Of that number I do not know how many are still in the land of the living, nor what the married names of the gals may be. I'm sorry to say I have no idea who would be privy to the information you need...

I was able to update the two Memorial Editions you mentioned; I appreciate the additions!

From Rochelle Spooner ('63) of NY - 07/30/14:

In Rome and the pope is on vacation. Poo poo.

AWW! Thanks, Rochelle! I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Go visit the Sistine Chapel and you'll feel better!

From My Friend, Tina, of NC - 07/29/14 - "Don't use NEW GAS COMING TO STATIONS":

Important warning to avoid costly repairs on your vehicles. This isn't a hoax.

Interesting . . .

While this gas is currently sold in only a few states, it's important to know the harm it can do IF you are traveling through states and are faced with the option to buy it. This short video could save your car from damage and void your warranty!

Please watch and pass along.

   YOWZERONI! Thanks, Tina!

From My Friend, Ariel, of IL - 07/28/14 - "Reading":

AMEN! Thank you, Ariel! Spoken like the teacher you are!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 07/22/14 - "Maxine (#9 in a series of 11)":

     Thanks, Dools!

From - 07/30/13:

A dingbat decided to start a chicken farm, so he bought a hundred chickens to start.

A month later, he returned to the dealer for another hundred chickens because all of the first lot had died.

A month later he was back at the dealers for another hundred chickens for the second lot had also died.

"But I think I know where I'm going wrong," said the dingbat. "I think I am planting them too deep."

One Summer Night

Written by Danny Webb

Recorded by The Danleers, 1958

One summer night, we fell in love
one summer night, I held you tight
you and I, under the moon of love, moon of love

One summer night, I kissed your lips
one summer night, I held you close
you and I, under the moon of love

You kissed me oh, so tenderly
and I knew this was love
and I as held you, oh so close
I knew no one could ever take your place, ohhhh

One summer night, we fell in love
one summer night, I held you tight
you and I, under the moon of love, moon of love
