From Patsy Blackard Hallett ('65) of
VA - 07/22/12, 9:29 AM:
Carol, Dave Arnold died yesterday afternoon, around 4:00. Pam and family will be making arrangements today for a service, but I don't know details yet. It is beyond sad; he never regained consciousness, having sustained multiple injuries. A great guy and friend to many . . . . . a tremendous loss. Patsy Blackard Hallett '65
Ohhhh, Patsy! I am so
terribly sorry to hear this! I really cannot quite comprehend it;
it just doesn't seem possible. Thank you for letting us know.

From Malcolm ('65) and
Polly Norris ('65) Davis of VA - 07/22/12, 11:54 AM:
Hello Carol, and thank you for
the information. How sad to hear of Dave's passing. It seems that in a
few days there will be a class reunion to celebrate Dave's life and give
comfort to his family as best we can. In the words of an old spiritual
hymn, "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There." It seems that
Dave has taken his place already and can answer "present" to that roll
call today. Malcolm and Polly Davis
Thank you, Malcolm and Polly - and a special thank you for suggesting
the hymn to attach to Dave's Memorial Newsletter.

WILLIAMSBURG - David 'Dave' Lee Arnold departed from this world on July
21, 2012. Dave served his country in the Air Force Reserve, during Vietnam, as a Pararescue Jumper. He was a patrol officer with York County before transferring to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, when it opened. He served there until his death. Dave will be remembered as a good, kind man, who was willing to help anyone. Many will remember his dry sense of humor, which entertained and which he was usually able to maintain despite adverse circumstances. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, Dave would want you to donate to a charity of your choice in his honor. He was a very giving man. |

August 19, 2012 Pam, I just found out and am so sorry to hear the news. I remember Dave's kind words when Chip passed away 2 years ago. Sometimes things happen in this world that just don't seem right. You have my deepest sympathy and empathy. ~
Peyton Clark, Apex, North Carolina August 08, 2012 I'm sad to hear of Dave's passing. My favorite memories were of times at NNHS, being in the band, and cruising the neighborhood to "visit" friends. He was always a sweetie with great playful eyes and a good friend for all of us. ~ Anne Korycinski Catron, Carrollton, Virginia August 03, 2012 I am saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I met Dave at my first VARJ meeting. Dave gave me his business card and told me to call him if I needed anything. With that said, I did. He gave me some guidance on what I need to do as a new training sergeant. I am thankful for that. God places people in our paths for a reason and I am blessed to be able to be able to say that I met Dave. God bless the Arnold family. He will be missed. ~ Katrina Morris, Roanoke, Virginia August 01, 2012
Words can not express my sadness in learning of the passing of Capt.
Arnold. "Just call me Dave" is what he would always tell me when we
talked on the phone. He was an exceptional man of profound moral
character and I will always admire him for his willingness to help
others. I always looked forward to seeing Dave at the VARJ meetings
and annual conference; he will be missed in the VARJ community. ~ Lt. Will Fowler (PRJ), Chester, Virginia August 01, 2012 It is with great regret that I learned of Dave's passing. Though I only knew him through his involvement with the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, he always had a positive attitude, was quick to lighten the atmosphere with his wit, and was was a good instructor. I am certain that he will be greatly missed.
~ Nathan Webel, Richmond, Virginia July 31, 2012 Pam and Family, I was so sad to hear of Dave's passing.. He was truly one of the nicest guys at NNHS...I know that you have many wonderful memories and I pray that they will give you comfort during the days ahead. God bless you and your family.
~ Dianne (Adams) Puckette, Newport News, Virginia July 31, 2012 I shoot with Dave and worked shoulder to shoulder with him, a finer man I have yet to meet. I am saddened to learn of his passing and surely hope I get to meet up with him again in the hereafter.

I grew up with Dave, a block away from "Pop
Arnold's Esso Station" & in NNHS. He was one of the nicest
guys I ever knew. May your fond memories of the times you had
together carry you through these bad times. He will be missed by
everyone whose lives he touched. He was such a great guy -so kind to
all, and always so nice, and friendly with every one. ~ Brenda Insley, Henrico, Virginia July 27, 2012 Dear Pam and Family, Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. ~ Jim and Carolyn Davis July 27, 2012
~ Clifford Regan, Williamsburg, Virginia July 26, 2012 Pam and family, I am so sorry for the loss of Dave. When we moved to NN in the 50's my Dad worked part-time for Pop Arnold at his ESSO station and I got to know Dave then. He was always so nice to everyone and I appreciated him for remembering who I was when I went to NNHS. Although I haven't seen either of you since high school, I have kept up with you through Carol's website and was so happy to see you had married. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you and your family adjust to life without this wonderful man!
~ Jeanette McDonald Hornsby, West Columbia, South Carolina July 26, 2012 I am sorry to hear of the passing of Capt. Arnold. I pray that you, his family, will find peace in this time of loss. My prayers are with you. ~ Diane Green, Williamsburg July 26, 2012
Sorry about Dave; he will be missed by all. July 26, 2012 As the
Occupational Physician for the VPRJ, I had the pleasure to work with
Captain Arnold many times over the last dozen years. I always
enjoyed his fine sense of humor, and admired his concern for the
welfare of the employees I was caring for. July 26, 2012 Uncle
Dave, Thanks for the memories! I love you and will miss you.
~ Leesa Strange, Meshoppen, Pennsylvania July 26, 2012
~ Gisela Sodorsky, Frankfurt, Germany July 26, 2012 I join all the others who have expressed sorrow at Dave's passing. I only knew him from the reunions, where he always had a ready smile and a welcome for everyone. My Dad was a good friend of "Pop" Arnold and Ruby. May they have a blessed reunion in Heaven, where there is no sorrow or pain. Love to Pam and family. ~

The name Dave Arnold was mentioned so many times by my parents as I was growing up, he felt like family. As I began my career in public safety, I would call on Dave frequently for advice or just simply to bounce ideas. Now, in the later stages of my career, our discussions turned to talk of family and friends. Dave was a wonderful friend and mentor, and I will miss him dearly. Rest well, brother. ~ Rodney Ware, Jr., Williamsburg, Virginia July 25, 2012 Pam, ~ Lloyd and Lorrie Harper, Haslet, Texas July 25, 2012

~ Williamsburg, Virginia July 25, 2012 Dave and I worked together in C&P Marketing and our common bond was our military background. It was a joy working with him and he made the job fun. During his years in the York County Sheriff's Dept he assisted my family on a personal matter regarding my son. I shall never forget that kindness which reflected of him as a man. He will be deeply missed but established a living legacy for us all to follow. With our regards to his family Tom and Rosa Walton, Richmond, Va.
~ Tom and Rosa Walton July 25, 2012 Pam and all family, We were so sorry to learn about Dave's tragic accident and death. We go back to the 70's as Terry and Dave were associated with several different groups. Dave was always so interesting, knowledgeable and personable. Even if we had not seen him for years, we could catch up immediately. Try to remember the good times. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers. ~ Kitty & Terry Heffington, Newport News, Virginia July 25, 2012 Prayers go out to the Arnold family. Capt. Arnold was a mentor to me and many others at VPRJ. He will be greatly missed! ~ Kevin Roane, Williamsburg, Virginia July 25, 2012 Dear
Pam, July 25, 2012 Pam, I was heart broken to hear about Dave. I last saw him in Walgreen’s a few weeks ago;, for those who really knew Dave they would understand his sense of humor. Dave and I share the same birthday, August 12. He yelled across the store wishing me an early birthday wish, we talked and I left with a smile on my face. Dave will truly be missed. Frank Brookman
~ Frank Brookman, Williamsburg, Virginia July 25, 2012 Dave and I grew up together. We went to college at the same time then sort of lost track of one another until several years ago. Pam, Dave and I all treasured our time at NNHS and planning for our reunions. I will always remember fondly our times together. My thoughts and prayers are with Pam and the family.
~ Ron Smith, Scottsville, Virginia July 25, 2012 Pam &
Family, We were so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. Some of our
fondest memories shared are shooting cannons and muskets, and
sitting around the campfire at night in Winchester laughing and
telling tales. He will be sorely missed. July 25, 2012 Dave was a good friend and was always there when I needed him to assist me on a case. When I would call on Dave, he would drop what he was doing to make sure I had everything I needed. I will never forget my friend and the smile on his face. He was a "brother in law enforcement" to officers everywhere.
~ Jeff Vellines, Williamsburg, Virginia July 25, 2012 I am so sorry to hear about Dave's passing and my thoughts are with Pam and the family.
~ Cortney West, Poquoson, Virginia July 25, 2012 Dear Pam, My memories of Dave go back so many years, as the rest of the NNHS group. He was so kind to me in high school. Now I can add Charles to the list of those who have such wonderful memories of Dave. We had the opportunity to spend time with you and Dave laughing, listening to his great stories, serious moments and when he held my granddaughter on the day that she was born. He will truly be missed. Thank you for the many memories! Love,
~ Pauline and Charles Shofner July 25, 2012 Pam
~ Rick Harman, Hampton, Virginia July 24, 2012

Family, sending my deepest sympathy and condolences to you at this
most difficult and sad time. God blessed you with a wonderful
husband and I pray that you will find peace and comfort in the sweet
memories. It has been years since I have seen Dave and I mostly
remember him as a young boy (before HS) growing up in the same
neighborhood. Even then at such a young age, he was a genuinely nice
person. My husband met Dave in more recent years through York County
and, like everyone else, had nothing but kind words to describe him.
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

May God be with you and your family and help you heal from your loss.
~ Sandi Bateman Chestnut, Newport News, Virginia July 24, 2012 Pam, My condolences to you and your family. I was lucky to have known David Lee for 33 years. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a quick funny wit. When we would ride the C&P carpool from Denbigh to Norfolk, he would keep me entertained when he wasn't in the back seat asleep. He really was a Southern Gentleman who did not suffer fools. I know he is sitting on a cloud with Ruby, looking down on all of us, now. And he is saying,"..Get back to work, Anderson!" We loved him and will miss him.

Dave. Dave and I were in Scouts together and we had many great
experiences in high school band. I could always count on him as a
friend. I wish that we had lived closer together over the years. We
will continue to pray for Pam and the rest of Dave's family and
friends for God's comfort, strength, peace, and love during this
time of deep sorrow and loss. May your hearts always be filled with
love and fond memories of Dave. "Peace I leave with you; not as the

~ Butch Ragland, Colorado Springs, Colorado July 24, 2012 Dave was one of those unique people that Heavenly Father sends to bless our lives. I was fortunate to meet him through Carol and various reunions, and even though I am not a NNHS graduate, I considered him as a friend. He was very kind, courteous, and concerned about those that he met along life's highway, and the void that he has left in our hearts cannot and will not be filled. However, his example will enable us all to remember this great man. Carol and I hope and pray that Pam and all of his family will be consoled with the knowledge that his life was filled with service to his fellow man, and as such, he has reaped a great reward. Thank you for sharing him with us over the years. ~ Paul Harty, Fayetteville, North Carolina July 24, 2012 I will miss one of the best friends I ever had. He was the person I could tell my problems to and he might not always have a answer, but he did and was willing to listen. He was a great help on the PASAP Board when I was chairman. ~ Charles Buffington, Poquoson, Virginia July 24, 2012 About three or four months ago Dave and I re-connected via a few e-mails. I had been going thru a pretty rough time for several years and he cheered me up and encouraged me. He told me of his love for Pam and how, for him, it was love at first sight. He has passed on, yes, but family and friends have warm, wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to Pam, families, and classmates. I will try to come to the services on Thursday. ~

It is with great pride that I say, "Dave Arnold was my friend.” RIP my Friend.
~ Jim Rogers, Yorktown, Virginia July 24, 2012 It didn't matter whether you saw Dave last week, or thirty years ago. He always remembered something about you and would have you laughing about it in under a minute. I'm personally saddened by by the loss of a great guy.
~ Bill Black, NNHS Class of '66, LaGrange, Georgia July 24, 2012 Pam and Family, My deepest sympathy goes out to you at this saddest of times. Dave was a great friend. He will be truly missed by all. May God watch over him and your family and keep you in his prayers always.
~ Bob Sodorsky, Sgt, VPRJ, Newport News, Virginia July 24, 2012 I am so sorry to hear about David leaving us so quickly. He was a wonderful friend from NNHS and from C&P. We will miss him so much. His family will be in my thoughts and prayers. ~ Brownie Shaffer Haracivet, Gloucester, Virginia July 24, 2012 Pam and family, my deepest condolences. I pray for your comfort and peace during this very sad time. Pam, may the few years you have had together bring you happiness as you reflect on the memories. God bless. ~ Margaret (Cookie) Tyndall, Yorktown, Virginia Contact Me July 24, 2012 I knew Dave Arnold for most of his adult life, and he epitomized the philosopher's ideal of the "compleat man." Certainly I do not presume that any sentiments I can offer will lessen the profound loss suffered by the family---not even Shakespeare could find words equal to that task---but I do want to say that I admired him not only for what he was to me as a steadfast friend but for what he was to the world: A man who left every person wiser and every place better than he found them. May the family find solace and comfort in the sure and certain knowledge that they are not alone in their grief.
~ Billy Walsh, Poquoson, Virginia July 24, 2012 My condolences to Pam, the children and the family members. I will always remember David as a caring and supportive co-worker during our fifteen years at VPRJ. He was a special person who will be greatly missed by the people whose lives he had touched.
~ Kathrine Parker, Wellington, New Zealand July 24, 2012 Dave was a good and true friend and a fellow Typhoon. I will dearly miss him and his wry sense of humor. Our monthly Typhoon lunch bunch has lost a treasured member.
~ Dave Spriggs, NNHS 1964, Norfolk, Virginia July 24, 2012 I only knew Dave as a member of the Civil War 150th, but I could tell how much he loved shooting the guns. It was an honor to have known him. ~ Richmond, Virginia |
Our deepest sympathies
are extended to Pam and to Dave's entire family.
