Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I am deeply grieved to report to you the tragic news we feared is a reality.   Dave Arnold, Class of 1965, husband of  the Head Cheerleader of 1965, Pam Smith Arnold ('65) of VA, passed away in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, July 21, 2012 three weeks before his 65th birthday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

His brother, Spencer Arnold, Hampton High School Class of 1948, predeceased him by seven months:

From Patsy Blackard Hallett ('65) of VA - 07/22/12, 9:29 AM:

Carol,

Dave Arnold died yesterday afternoon, around 4:00. Pam and family will be making arrangements today for a service, but I don't know details yet.

It is beyond sad; he never regained consciousness, having sustained multiple injuries. A great guy and friend to many . . . . . a tremendous loss.

Patsy Blackard Hallett '65

Ohhhh, Patsy!  I am so terribly sorry to hear this!  I really cannot quite comprehend it; it just doesn't seem possible.  Thank you for letting us know.

From Malcolm ('65) and    Polly Norris ('65) Davis of VA - 07/22/12, 11:54 AM:

Hello Carol, and thank you for the information. How sad to hear of Dave's passing. It seems that in a few days there will be a class reunion to celebrate Dave's life and give comfort to his family as best we can. In the words of an old spiritual hymn, "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, I'll Be There." It seems that Dave has taken his place already and can answer "present" to that roll call today.

Malcolm and Polly Davis

Thank you, Malcolm and Polly - and a special thank you for suggesting the hymn to attach to Dave's Memorial Newsletter.

From the Head Flagtwirler of 1965, Janice McCain Rose of Northern VA - 07/24/12:

Saturday, October 22, 2005, 10:14 AM - #66 Saturday, October 22, 2005, 11:17 AM Saturday, October 22, 2005, 1:19 PM - #75

From the Daily Press - 07/24/12:

       David L. Arnold

WILLIAMSBURG - David 'Dave' Lee Arnold departed from this world on July 21, 2012.

Dave served his country in the Air Force Reserve, during Vietnam, as a Pararescue Jumper. He was a patrol officer with York County before transferring to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, when it opened. He served there until his death. Dave will be remembered as a good, kind man, who was willing to help anyone. Many will remember his dry sense of humor, which entertained and which he was usually able to maintain despite adverse circumstances. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, Dave would want you to donate to a charity of your choice in his honor. He was a very giving man.

Dave Arnold

He is survived by his wife, Pam Arnold; his stepchildren, Laura Giouzelis (and her son, Sammy Giouzelis), Peter Tomczyk (and his wife, Sarah), Jeff Tomczyk; his cousin, Mary Anne Hall; and sister-in-law, Lucy Arnold.

The family will receive friends at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, with a memorial service beginning at 6 p.m.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Published in the Daily Press from July 24 to July 26, 2012.

I'm sad to hear of Dave's passing. My favorite memories were of times at NNHS, being in the band, and cruising the neighborhood to "visit" friends. He was always a sweetie with great playful eyes and a good friend for all of us.

I am saddened to hear of Dave's passing. I met Dave at my first VARJ meeting. Dave gave me his business card and told me to call him if I needed anything. With that said, I did. He gave me some guidance on what I need to do as a new training sergeant. I am thankful for that. God places people in our paths for a reason and I am blessed to be able to be able to say that I met Dave. God bless the Arnold family. He will be missed.

Words can not express my sadness in learning of the passing of Capt. Arnold. "Just call me Dave" is what he would always tell me when we talked on the phone. He was an exceptional man of profound moral character and I will always admire him for his willingness to help others. I always looked forward to seeing Dave at the VARJ meetings and annual conference; he will be missed in the VARJ community.

My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

~  Lt. Will Fowler (PRJ), Chester, Virginia

It is with great regret that I learned of Dave's passing. Though I only knew him through his involvement with the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, he always had a positive attitude, was quick to lighten the atmosphere with his wit, and was was a good instructor. I am certain that he will be greatly missed.

  Pam and Family...
The man is a success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. We know Dave was all this and more... he will be missed... Thinking of you keeping you in our thoughts and prayers

Pam and family, I am so sorry for the loss of Dave. When we moved to NN in the 50's my Dad worked part-time for Pop Arnold at his ESSO station and I got to know Dave then. He was always so nice to everyone and I appreciated him for remembering who I was when I went to NNHS. Although I haven't seen either of you since high school, I have kept up with you through Carol's website and was so happy to see you had married. You will be in my thoughts and prayers as you and your family adjust to life without this wonderful man!

July 26, 2012

First I would like to offer my condolences to the Arnold family. The name Dave Arnold was mentioned so many times by my parents as I was growing up, he felt like family. As I began my career in public safety, I would call on Dave frequently for advice or just simply to bounce ideas. Now, in the later stages of my career, our discussions turned to talk of family and friends. Dave was a wonderful friend and mentor, and I will miss him dearly. Rest well, brother.

~  Rodney Ware, Jr., Williamsburg, Virginia

July 25, 2012

Pam,

Dave and I knew each other nearly all our lives. Our fathers were Exxon Oil dealers and friends, though Dave and I did not become close friends until the mid 70's due to our age difference. We were almost inseparable for about 15 years, traveling to shoots, training and developing USPSA together. Dave was like the big brother I never had until I left Virginia in the late 1980's.

Dave was the best man at my wedding in Colorado to Lorrie in 1989. Lorrie and I both loved Dave and there could not have been anyone else to stand by my side.

I only wish I had kept better touch over the years with Dave since moving to Colorado and now Texas.

I cannot express my sorrow in his passing. I pray for your comfort and know that Dave is in a place he will rest in peace and love.

~ Lloyd and Lorrie Harper, Haslet, Texas

I will miss you, my friend.

Dear Pam and Family, We send you our love. Please be comforted in the knowledge that you are joined with many today who grieve Dave's passing. We move from life to everlasting life in only an instant. Amazing! God's grace gives us hope and peace that passes all understanding even in times like these. Bless his soul and bless your heart as you prepare to say one last goodbye to your beloved. Allow the presence of those who attend the service to embrace his legacy and comfort your emotions. You are not alone. Sincerely, Malcolm and Polly

To Dave's family and friends. Lynne and I are very sad to hear of the loss of such a dear friend. Although many years have gone by and we have lived far away, we still remember our friends and especially Dave. Dave and I were in Scouts together and we had many great experiences in high school band. I could always count on him as a friend. I wish that we had lived closer together over the years. We will continue to pray for Pam and the rest of Dave's family and friends for God's comfort, strength, peace, and love during this time of deep sorrow and loss. May your hearts always be filled with love and fond memories of Dave. "Peace I leave with you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Pam,
I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was indeed a true friend. Over the last few years, we have been in almost daily contact through e-mails, telephone calls, and I miss that already. He even was the courier for a special gift from Monty Phillips, which created another opportunity to have one more lunch. His being involved, just made that gift more special. You will always be in that exclusive law enforcement family, if ever you need anything. Remember, "Blessed are the Peacemakers", you and the family are in my prayers.

Dave was one of those unique people that Heavenly Father sends to bless our lives. I was fortunate to meet him through Carol and various reunions, and even though I am not a NNHS graduate, I considered him as a friend. He was very kind, courteous, and concerned about those that he met along life's highway, and the void that he has left in our hearts cannot and will not be filled. However, his example will enable us all to remember this great man. Carol and I hope and pray that Pam and all of his family will be consoled with the knowledge that his life was filled with service to his fellow man, and as such, he has reaped a great reward. Thank you for sharing him with us over the years.

I will miss one of the best friends I ever had. He was the person I could tell my problems to and he might not always have a answer, but he did and was willing to listen. He was a great help on the PASAP Board when I was chairman.

About three or four months ago Dave and I re-connected via a few e-mails. I had been going thru a pretty rough time for several years and he cheered me up and encouraged me. He told me of his love for Pam and how, for him, it was love at first sight. He has passed on, yes, but family and friends have warm, wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to Pam, families, and classmates. I will try to come to the services on Thursday.

I knew Dave Arnold for most of his adult life, and he epitomized the philosopher's ideal of the "compleat man." Certainly I do not presume that any sentiments I can offer will lessen the profound loss suffered by the family---not even Shakespeare could find words equal to that task---but I do want to say that I admired him not only for what he was to me as a steadfast friend but for what he was to the world: A man who left every person wiser and every place better than he found them. May the family find solace and comfort in the sure and certain knowledge that they are not alone in their grief.

When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder

Lyrics and Music by James Milton Black (19 Aug 1856 - 21 Dec 1938), 1893

1. When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more
And the morning breaks eternal, bright and fair
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

2. On that bright and cloudless morning when the dead in Christ shall rise
And the glory of His resurrection share
When His chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

3. Let us labor for the Master from the dawn till setting sun,
Let us talk of all His wondrous love and care;
Then when all of life is over, and our work on earth is done
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there!

Chorus:
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder,
When the roll, is called up yonder
When the roll is called up yonder I'll be there!
