Keep the Home Fires Burning

“The world must be made safe for democracy.”

- Woodrow Wilson, April 2, 1917
(28 Dec 1856 - 03 Feb 1924)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is another WWI era song that               my mama (the late Maxine Frix Buckley - John Marshall HS - '25) (19 May 1908 - 15 Feb 1999) used to sing to       my sister (Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) and me when we were little girls. It was one of my favorites - and it still is.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_the_Home_Fires_Burning_%281914_song%29

Keep the Home-Fires Burning ('Till the Boys Come Home) is a British patriotic First World War song composed by Ivor Novello with words by Lena Gilbert Ford (whose middle name was sometimes printed as "Guilbert"), published first during 1914.

The song was published first as 'Till the Boys Come Home on October 8, 1914 by Ascherberg, Hopwood, and Crew Ltd. in London[1]. A new edition was printed during 1915 with the name Keep the Home-Fires Burning[1]. The song became very popular in the United Kingdom during the war, along with It's a Long Way to Tipperary.

James F. Harrison recorded Keep the Home-Fires Burning during 1915, as did Stanley Kirkby during 1916. Another popular recording was sung by tenor John McCormack during 1917, who was also the first to record It's a Long Way to Tipperary during 1914...

“One of the most Godlike expressions of the human soul is the act of forgiveness. Everyone is wronged at some point by someone, and many suffer serious wrongs… Forgiveness is mortality’s mirror image of the mercy of God.”

BONUS KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING RECIPES:

http://blog.homeexchange.com/blog/stories-with-sandra/keep-home-fires-burning/ - Sandra Harris Ramini's Keep the Home Fires Burning (Christmas in July) - "Happy Christmas! I’m told that I might offend some of my readers by using Christmas to describe this fabulous festive time. I simply don’t believe it. Here in Britain we couldn’t be more multi-cultural or diverse if we tried, yet with remarkable tolerance and good sense not one of our many diverse communities makes a fuss. Everyone understands that Father Christmas is not about religion, he’s about tradition. In fact, Christmas puddings mince pies (not meat, but sweet fruit in gooey sauce) holly, ivy, robins, mistletoe and all the rest of it is Britain at its most traditional. Isn’t that why millions of visitors pour into these islands every year? Because no one does tradition quite like us?"

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 07/19/16:

We had built our dream house some years ago, and furnished it with quality pieces as we could afford them. Now the delivery truck carrying the last purchase, a new bedroom suite, was pulling into the driveway.

"Finally!" I exclaimed, flinging open the front door as the driver walked up to the house. "I've been waiting twelve years for this!"

"Don't blame me, lady," he said. "I just got the order this morning."

Keep the Home Fires Burning

Lyrics by Lena Gilbert Ford (1870 – 07 Mar 1918)

Music by Ivor Novello (David Ivor Davies) (15 Jan 1893 - 06 Mar 1951), 1914

They were summoned from the hillside,
They were called in from the glen,
And the Country found them ready
At the stirring call for men.
Let no tears add to their hardship,
As the Soldiers pass along
And although your heart is breaking,
Make it sing this cheery song.

REFRAIN :
Keep the Home-fires burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of Home;
There's a silver lining
Through the dark cloud shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out,
Till the boys come Home.

Over seas there came a pleading,
"Help a Nation in distress!"
And we gave our glorious laddies,
Honor made us do no less.
For no gallant Son of Freedom
To a tyrant's yoke should bend,
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend!"
