Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
This is another WWI era song that
my mama
(the late Maxine Frix Buckley - John
Marshall HS - '25) (19
May 1908 - 15 Feb 1999) used to sing to
my
sister
(Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of
NC)
and me when we were little girls. It
was one of my favorites - and it still is.

Keep the Home-Fires Burning ('Till the Boys Come Home)
is a British patriotic First World War song composed by
Ivor Novello with words by
Lena Gilbert Ford (whose middle name was sometimes printed as "Guilbert"),
published first during 1914. The song was published first as 'Till the Boys Come Home on October 8, 1914 by Ascherberg, Hopwood, and Crew Ltd. in London[1]. A new edition was printed during 1915 with the name Keep the Home-Fires Burning[1]. The song became very popular in the United Kingdom during the war, along with It's a Long Way to Tipperary. James F. Harrison recorded Keep the Home-Fires Burning during 1915, as did Stanley Kirkby during 1916. Another popular recording was sung by tenor John McCormack during 1917, who was also the first to record It's a Long Way to Tipperary during 1914... |

“One of the most Godlike expressions of the human soul is the act of
forgiveness. Everyone is wronged at some point by someone, and many
suffer serious wrongs… Forgiveness is mortality’s mirror image of the
mercy of God.”

BONUS KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING RECIPES:
http://blog.homeexchange.com/blog/stories-with-sandra/keep-home-fires-burning/ - Sandra Harris Ramini's Keep the Home Fires Burning (Christmas in July) - "Happy Christmas! I’m told that I might offend some of my readers by using Christmas to describe this fabulous festive time. I simply don’t believe it. Here in Britain we couldn’t be more multi-cultural or diverse if we tried, yet with remarkable tolerance and good sense not one of our many diverse communities makes a fuss. Everyone understands that Father Christmas is not about religion, he’s about tradition. In fact, Christmas puddings mince pies (not meat, but sweet fruit in gooey sauce) holly, ivy, robins, mistletoe and all the rest of it is Britain at its most traditional. Isn’t that why millions of visitors pour into these islands every year? Because no one does tradition quite like us?" |
