Dear Friends and Schoolmates,  

   There is even more sad news today.  
  Georgie Sawyer Ihlefield, Class of June 1946, passed away at her home in Waverly on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at the age of 82.

WAVERLY - Georgie Sawyer Ihlefield, 82, passed away July 10, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Myrtle Ward Sawyer; husband, Walter H. "Dick" Ihlefield Jr.; sister, Kaye S. Pitts; and a half-brother, Raymond P. Woolard.

Georgie graduated from Newport News High School in 1946 and was a semi-professional roller skater with the Newport News Rollerettes who performed for the U.S.O. Georgie worked for C&P Telephone, now Verizon, was retired Civil Service from Fort Lee and was a long time employee of Waverly Drug Store. Known for her knitting and yarn work, there are many generations of family and friends who own personalized Christmas stockings made by Georgie.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, the Rev. W.H. "Jud" Ihlefield III and wife, Susan, of Whaleyville, Va., and Terrie B. Foster and husband, Bill, of Claremont, Va.; sisters, Bernice S. Geddings, of Hayes, Va., and Virginia S. Morriss, of Disputanta, Va.; grandsons, Christopher M. Barrett, of Wakefield, Va., and Jared S. Ihlefield, of Dinwiddie, Va.; great-grandson, Devin R. Ihlefield, of Prince George, Va.; nieces, Linda P. Soucek and husband, Howie, of Franklin, Va., Donna P. Sterling and husband, Wayne, of Dutton, Va., Bethany G. Vander Haeghe and husband, Martin, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Carla M. Scarboro and husband, Darrell, of Waverly, Va.; great-nieces and nephews, Allison M. Mayes, Leigh and Sarah Vander Haeghe, Allen Soucek, Matt Soucek, Melanie Hamilton and husband, Jeff and Stephanie Robins; great-great-nieces, Zhanna Soucek and Haley Marie Hamilton; and a host of many beloved extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Waverly Congregational Christian Church with the Rev. Chuck Willman officiating. Burial will be private. The family suggests that the attire for this service be casual.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crater Community Hospice, 3916 S. Crater Rd. Petersburg, VA 23805, Waverly Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 583 Waverly, VA 23890, or Waverly Congregational Christian Church, P.O. Box 636 Waverly, VA 23890.
