Irving Althaus
(d. 14 July 2014)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have still another sad Memorial Edition of the NNHS Newsletter this Wednesday.    Irving Althaus, cousin of the late Samuel Althaus, passed away in Newport News on Sunday, July 14, 2014 at the age of 89.  A familiar figure to most of our readers, he was the manager of Althaus Delicatessen & Caterers.

May his memory be for a blessing always.

                      Irving Althaus

NEWPORT NEWS - Irving Althaus, longtime Peninsula resident and businessman, died on July 14th at the age of 89.

Irving was born in Ciechanow, Poland, and emigrated to the United States in 1949. A proud survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Irving became an American citizen in 1954.

He was manager of Althaus Delicatessen & Caterers in Newport News for 46 years, working with his cousin, the late Samuel Althaus, until their retirement in 1997.

An avid reader of history and biography, Irving was a participant in Holocaust survivor history documentation projects. He loved gatherings of friends and family, good food, practical jokes, and TV news.

Irving is survived by Etta Baker and the Baker family; cousins Marian and Harry Althaus, and Miriam Koernberg (Glendale, NY); and scores of longtime friends.

We are saddened to learn of Irving's death. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Marian, Harry, Miriam and the Baker family at the loss of Irving.
Irving was a jokester, but more importantly, a kind and loving person. Wallace worked with Irving, Sam and family for many years at the 28th street, Newmarket and Oyster Point locations. Sam gave us our wedding reception in the 1970s, as a gift, at the delicatessen in Newmarket. Of course, Irving made sure that everything was perfect for that day. We will forever remember Irving and the good life he lived after such a horrible early life in Poland.
Irving and Sam were prime examples of overcoming early life hardships and not allowing those hardships to become excuses for their futures.
We salute this survivor and friend.
