NEWPORT NEWS - Irving Althaus, longtime Peninsula resident and
businessman, died on July 14th at the age of 89.
Irving was born in Ciechanow, Poland, and emigrated to the United States in 1949. A proud survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, Irving became an American citizen in 1954. He was manager of Althaus Delicatessen & Caterers in Newport News for 46 years, working with his cousin, the late Samuel Althaus, until their retirement in 1997.
