Let's Hang On

“Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.”

- William Feather
(25 Aug 1889 - 7 Jan 1981)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Welcome to another Friday, the 13th!
We're taking a little break from our summer time themes to honor a request from
Paul Dobie ('66) of CO and DC - 07/05/07:

..... I have a song request unless you have already played it this year. “Let’s Hang On” by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – 1965…I guess I am a little nostalgic…I remember the girl I sat in Antine's with while this played on the jukebox… Ah, the 60’s….....

   Thanks for the suggestion, Paul!

From Me ('65) of NC - 07/13/07 - "Our Own Seventh Birthday!":

What an appropriate theme - and quotation - for today!  Our web site is seven years old today! Who would ever have imagined such a thing?!? Thank you all for your support!

UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS:

17 - Marilyn Payne Springfield ('66) of VA
19 - Dale Chestnut (Nakina HS, NC - '54) of VA

Many Happy Returns to you both!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 07/11/07 - " Re: Linkous Ancestral Home Images":

".....David, I spent about 90 minutes yesterday looking through my files for those beautiful pictures you took of the Linkous Ancestral Home. I know they're there, and I know they appeared on a Newsletter, and I just can't find them. If you could please tell me the day they were taken, I could locate the Newsletter in which they appeared, and then I could see in which folder I stashed them, and then I could stop pulling out the remaining strands of hair on my head....."

Sometimes it is easier to scan than to search. So, you may select from the attached images as you wish.....

D

Or... I could select them ALL..... Thanks, Brown Eyes!

From Linda Letchworth Enochs ('60) of TX - 07/11/07 - "Jody Turner Brinkley":

What ever happened to Jody Turner Brinkley? I think she was a cheerleader and much younger than (I).

Hmmm.  I am somehow drawing an total blank on this, and I know I'm probably going to feel like an absolute idiot when the truth is revealed, but I can't place Jody.  I noticed I'd never made a cheerleader page for the Class of 1967, even though that gorgeous   David Whitley ('67 - of VA) has graciously allowed me to borrow his senior Anchor just to facilitate problems such as this.

Okay, let's make a deal.  I'll make that page, and one of you sweet angels can tell me to what class Jody belonged, and perhaps then one of y'all can tell Linda whatever became of her.

   Thanks for the nudge, Linda!

From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 07/11/07 - "Check out Newport News High School, Girls Basketball Team 1923":

Hi Carol,

I was searching for yearbooks this evening and came across this site. Have you seen it?

Newport News High School, Newport News, VA Girls Basketball Team 1923

Speaking of basketball players, seeing
Terry Seay's ('67 - of TN) picture in a recent newsletter brought back a vivid memory. I was partnered with Terry in Chemistry Class ('66 or '67) for some noxious experiment or other, when he decided to break out into an a capella rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Uptight (Outasight)", to the delight of the class. I don't remember the teacher (hence my search for yearbooks) but he or she may not have been present at the time.

Being a petite princess, I naturally had a great admiration for all things tall, especially those basketball players. Which reminds me--I have a chiropractor's appointment tomorrow.

Typhoons 4 Ever!
Chris Starkman

PS Thanks for the Summer Rain. We're not getting much of that in SoCal lately.

No, Chris, I had not seen that page - or the image - before, but I took the opportunity to snag it for our Odds and Ends page:  And as it's the oldest item in that collection, it's right at the top of the page:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/SITE-MAP.html

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/oddsends.html

          http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/1923-girls-basketball.html - brand new page!

Of course it's in chronological order!  You know how compulsively obsessive (or is it obsessively compulsive?!?) I am about such things!

Might your chemistry teacher have been Mrs. Baker or Mr. Leonard??

(OOPS! I never made Mr. Leonard's page either!)

I hope you enjoyed your chiropractic visit.  Best wishes on your badly needed rain! Thanks, Lady!

From Shirley Eanes Matthews ('66) of VA - 07/12/07 - "Coach Nuttycombe's Recognition Dinner":

Carol,

In addition to coaching, Coach Nuttycombe was also a teacher. Many of us (boys and girls) had him for Geography. I remember him as one of the most congenial teachers I ever had.

Many of us also had him for driver's training. I still think of him when I don't have my hands in the "ten and two" position on the steering wheel. And some of his lessons must have stuck, since I've only had 1 ticket in the 40+ years I've been driving. (Honest, Coach! It's not my fault! I don't know how it happened! I was passing a tractor-trailer, going up hill over a mountain - I didn't know my old car could go that fast!!!!!!).

Even though I am unable to attend the dinner, I send Coach my best wishes and thank him for all the lessons he taught that have helped me get through these last 40+ years.

Shirley Eanes Matthews (Class of 66)
Louisa, VA

Thank you so much, Shirley! I posted your recollections on Mr. Nuttycombe's page:

Carol,

We are searching for classmates for our upcoming reunion during Labor Day weekend ... can you help?

Contact Marty McCoy at mmccoy@vectec.org.

I think we can do that, Terry! I'll call Marty soon - really, I will - and make another page or two for your Reunion, and then we'll try to hunt these Sweetie-Pies down for you.  I'm pretty sure at least one or two of them should be a piece of cake!

And by the way, the world still wants to know: Will this be an open reunion?

And what were your class colors and flowers?

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 06/26/07 - "Calling all Riverside Hospital Graduates":

I just received this email from a high school classmate to pass on. Please pass onto anyone you think might be a nurse or knows someone so they can have a great reunion. With so many people moving or getting married or re-married after graduation, it is hard to find everyone and emailing is a wonderful tool.

Thanks.

Karrin,

I know you have access to other classes besides our own. We are trying to let as many people know about our reunion as possible. Please forward this if it is not too much trouble.

Riverside School of Professional Nursing is having a Grand Reunion of all classes July 21 and July 22, 2007. There will be a luncheon on Saturday and a tour of the new school campus. Saturday night is open for the individual classes to meet. Sunday there will be a family picnic in NN Park, Jefferson Avenue near Ft. Eustis.

If you are a graduate or know someone who is, please help us get the word out so as many as possible will know and be able to attend. e-mail response or questions to:

rspnalumni@widowmaker.com

You can also e-mail me.
Judy Ring Whitehead

Let's Hang On

(Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, 1965)

There ain't no good in our good-bye
True love takes a lot of tryin’, oh I'm cryin’

Let's hang on to what we've got
Don't let go girl we've got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on hang on hang on
To what we've got

You say you're gonna go and call it quits
Gonna chuck it all and break our love to bits
(breakin’ up) I wish you'd never said it
(breakin’ up) No no we'll both regret it

That little chip of diamond on your hand
Means a fortune, baby, but you know it stands
(for your love) A love to try and bind ya
We just can't leave behind us

Baby (don't you go) Baby (oh no no)
(think it over and) Stay

Let's hang on to what we've got
Don't let go girl we've got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on hang on hang on
To what we've got

There isn't anything I wouldn't do
I'd pay any price to get in good with you
(patch it up) Give me a second turning
(patch it up) Don't cool off while I'm burning

You've got me cryin’, dyin’ at your door
Don't shut me out let me in once more
(open up) Your arms I need to hold you
(open up) Your heart oh girl I told you

Baby (don't you go) Baby (oh no no)
(think it over and) Stay

Let's hang on to what we've got
Don't let go girl we've got a lot
Got a lot of love between us
Hang on hang on hang on
To what we've got
