Selma Frank
(d. 27 May 2010)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We have more sad if somewhat belated news this Sunday morning.    Selma Frank, mother of    Ellen Frank Lightman ('64) of Israel and/or MD and of Judy Frank Stieglitz of NY, passed away in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday, May 27, 2010, at the age of 94.  May her memory be for a blessing always.

From the Daily Press - 07/04/10:

      Selma Frank

BALTIMORE, MD. - Selma Frank, 94, a resident of Newport News from 1940 to 1997, died in Baltimore, Md., on May 27, 2010.

She was a native of the Rhinepfalz, Germany, where her family lived for hundreds of years; fled from the Nazis in 1939, spending a year in London, before receiving permission to enter the United States. She came to Newport News to marry Hans Frank, whom she knew as a teenager in Germany. They were married for 62 years. Her first employer in Newport News was Silverman Furs.

Mrs. Frank, along with her husband, who preceded her in death in 2003, owned Frank's Market in the East End of Newport News, during the 1940s-50s. Later, she and her husband were active in real estate until their move to Baltimore. She was a volunteer in the gift shop at Riverside Hospital for many years. Although the family wanted the Franks to move to Baltimore for many years, Mrs. Frank "loved volunteering at the hospital so much that she did not want to leave Newport News," said her daughter, Ellen Lightman. Also, she was an active member of Adath Jeshurun Congregation for nearly six decades.

Mrs. Frank is survived by another daughter, Judy Stieglitz of New York; sons-in-law, Dr. Noah Lightman and Richard Stieglitz; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dear Ellen and Judy, I was saddened to hear of the passing of your Mom at the age of 94. The one thing I remember about Mom was her smile and as the obituary indicated she loved volunteering in the gift shop of Riverside Regional Medical Center where she greeted everybody with her signature smile and always a kind word. She along with your Dad allowed Adath Jeshurun Synagogue to remain intact serving the Orthodox community with distinction for so many years with their membership, dedication and financial support. May Mom's memory always be for a Blessing and may each of us who had the privilege of knowing her take and accept her wonderful qualities and generously pass them on to others. May you and your family be comforted knowing that Mom was so well taken care of in her final years. I was Blessed to know her.

I am sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was such a sincere lady. My husband (who is passed away now) and I bought our home from them after a few years of renting. Two of the finest people you would ever have wanted to meet. Thanks for all the Christmas cards thru the years; you were a doll.

Ellen,
I was so very sorry to hear about your mother's death. I will always remember her many kindness to my grandmother as well as to all of us. Having just lost my mom, I know what a sad time this is for you and your sister. My thoughts are with you.
