07/01/09 - NNHS Newsletter - Lonely Day

“In the name of the best within you, do not sacrifice this world to those who are its worst. In the name
of the values that keep you alive, do not let your vision of man be distorted by the ugly, the cowardly,
the mindless in those who have never achieved this title. Do not lose your knowledge that man's proper
estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads.
Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate,
the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration
for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle.
The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it's yours.”

- Ayn Rand
(02 Feb 1905 - 06 Mar 1982)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This song is of a genre not usually associated with people of our generation (s), but the poignant lyrics appeal to my melancholy nature.  Besides, I ask you, as an English major, how could I possibly resist the words, "The most loneliest day of my life" ?!?  And I already had all the fiery animations to match the bonus video!  WHOO-HOO!

HEALTH UPDATE:

From Sandi Bateman Chestnut ('65) of VA - 07/01/09, 2:43 PM - "Good News":

Thank you to everyone that kept my family and me in your thoughts and prayers.  I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to everyone with the results, but needed a few days to recover from the procedure. The results of my catheterization were great, no blockages.  The doctor even told Dale and Kimberly that my arteries were in such good shape, he'd trade with me if he could.  The only thing he said about the stress test being abnormal is that it was a "false positive".  According to the nurses attending me, it happens a lot.  As a matter of fact, the 34-yr old son-in-law of friends of ours had a catheterization the day before I did and his came back the same way, a false abnormality.  I'm very, very thankful that mine was false and hopefully, I won't have to go through it again.  Thanks again for thinking of us!

Love,
Sandi

SUPER-DE-DUPER! Thanks for sharing this g-r-r-r-reat news with us, Sandi!

ALERT:

From Jane Chambers of VA - 06/26/09:

Hello from Jane Chambers, CNC/U retired prof. of English.....

In Dec. of 2008, 3 of us who are all retired CNC/U faculty, published a book (see attached BROCHURE) called Memories of Christopher Newport College: The First Decade, 1961-71. Some 35 people--retired faculty, staff, & former students, wrote short essays for this book, which was paid for by individual donations.  The book is dedicated to   "Scotty" Cunningham, CNC's first president, who unfortunately died before we completed the book. All profit from the book goes into a scholarship in his memory at CNU.

Virtually all of our earliest students came to us from the Peninsula high schools. We are trying now to locate them, for several reasons. Of course, we want them to know about Memories. Some of them have their names and/or pictures in the book, along with names and pictures and information about some of their CNC professors and classmates. Also, since virtually all records of the earliest students have been lost or misplaced at CNU, and the Alumni Association there has virtually no records until the mid-1970s, we want to fill this major gap in the history of CNC/U

We are creating lists of each CNC class from 1961-71, with names, addresses, e-mails, degree(s) if any, occupations, and family members. These will circulate only among the former students and interested retired professors until sometime in 2011, when CNC/U has its 50th Anniversary. At that time, we'll share the information with CNU, so that the "lost decade" students can be officially listed.  Since these are our students from the First Decade, we're calling them the "First Decaders." We plan to honor them in some fashion during that 50th year. So we want to find them in order to invite them to our celebration of their part in the creation of the college.

We're using various avenues to locate those "First Decaders," including Alumni records at William and Mary, since many of them transferred there after 2 yrs. with us. (CNC was a 2-yr branch of W&M until 1971).  Connecting with Alumni groups at the high schools is another avenue I'm pursuing. This is why I asked Sylvia Weinstein, who asked   Nancy (Bigger) Alligood ('56 - of VA), who asked you to help!

And I thank you very much for that help!

What I'll need also for the NNHS graduates who then went to CNC will be some way to contact them--preferably by e-mail or SnailMail.

I've noticed that there is a NEWSLETTER put out by the NNHS Alumni. Is it possible for me to put an article in that? MANY THANKS!

Yes, ma'am - and here it is again today (but still no brochure.....)!

Thank you, Jane - and much success!

Y'all spread the word, please! You may contact Dr. Chambers at cncmemories61_71@yahoo.com.

  Bizarre Things To Think About

Does killing time damage eternity?
How do you write zero in Roman numerals?
Do people in Australia call the rest of the world "up over"?
Why is it that night falls but day breaks?
How can there be self-help "groups"?
How do you get off a non-stop flight?
If tin whistles are made out of tin, what do they make foghorns out of?
If you shouldn't drink and drive, why do bars have parking lots?
If you jog backwards, will you gain weight?
How come wrong numbers are never busy?

SIGNS YOU'RE GETTING OLDER

* You got cable for the Weather Channel
* If a young girl looks at you, you check to make sure  you remembered to put on your pants.
* When you do the "Hokey Pokey" you put your left hip out... and you can't get it back around.
* Most women you know under 40 put you in the "Friend of my  Father" class.
* Restaurants stop asking to see your senior discount card.
* You have a party and the neighbors don't even realize it.
* You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who  walks into the room.
* You talk about "good grass" and you're referring to someone's lawn.
* Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service.
* Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either.

Woman finds treasure with metal detector

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, England - A British woman said her seven years of combing fields and beaches with a metal detector paid off with a 15th-century piece of gold valued at about $400,000. Mary Hannaby, 57, said she and her son, Michael, 33, were walking in a Hertfordshire field when they discovered the item, believed to be part of a reliquary or pendant, four inches below the ground, a position experts said it has likely been in for about 500 years, The Daily Telegraph reported. "You can literally miss things by inches," Michael Hannaby said. "We couldn't believe it. We always dreamed of finding treasure." Roger Bland, head of treasure at the British Museum, said the item, which depicts the Holy Trinity, is an "important find" but the museum does not have the funds to participate in its auction, scheduled for July 9 at Sotheby's in London.

Groaner Alert

So it was my birthday. I had a big party, and my friend made me a birthday cake. He brought it out, and it was a savory cake. It had a doughy base, with cheese and all sorts of other toppings sprinkled on top.
I said, "That must have taken a lot of effort to make."
And he said, "No, it was a pizza cake."

Today's Random Fact:

Men get hiccups more often than women.

"He who hesitates is not only lost, but miles from the next exit." - Unknown

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thanks again, Shari! Oh - about those hiccups: I personally cannot stand to get them for even a few moments, and I'm always surprised by the number of people who are unaware of this instantaneous (for me, anyway) cure. Simply ingest one teaspoon of brown sugar. (Well, regular granulated sugar works just as well, but given your "druthers", wouldn't you really rather have brown sugar?!?)

Two more goofy things that shouldn't work but do:

To stave off a sneeze when it might be embarrassing in public: touch the tips of your thumb and middle finger together and squeeze tightly. For a particularly nasty threatening sneeze, try both hands simultaneously.

For sudden leg cramps: Squeeze the two sides of your top lip together between your thumb and index finger so that they touch. This not only works in a few seconds, but has the added advantage of muffling your screams from that horrible cramping in your legs.

From Al Farber ('64) of GA - 06/30/09 - "Seniors":

This was sent to me...thought it was GOOD....al

Hi, ah....

Hummm let me think.... why did I send you this...... don't tell me, it's coming to me..... Oh ya.....

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world,
real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:

     The melody out of music,
    The pride out of appearance,
    The courtesy out of driving,
    The romance out of love,
    The commitment out of marriage,
    The responsibility out of parenthood,
The togetherness out of the family,
    The learning out of education,
    The service out of patriotism,
    The Golden Rule from rulers,
The nativity scene out of cities,
    The civility out of behavior,
    The refinement out of language,
    The dedication out of employment,
    The prudence out of spending,
The ambition out of achievement, or,
God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance
from personal relationships and interactions with others!!

And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

Does anyone under the age of 50 know the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner?  or O Canada?

Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts
as they stand at attention, on veterans day and our great country's  birthday.

YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party......    even if it lasts until 8 p.m.
I'm very good at opening childproof caps...   with a hammer.
I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going.
I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.
I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying.
I'm very good at telling stories; over and over and over and over...
I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not nearly as cute as mine.
I'm so cared for --- long term care, eye care, private care, dental care.

I'm not really grouchy,

I just don't like traffic, waiting, crowds, lawyers, loud music, unruly kids, Jenny Craig and Toyota commercials,
barking dogs, politicians and a few other things I can't seem to remember right now.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.
I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.
I'm having trouble remembering simple words like.......
I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.
I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen?
I'm wondering, if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?
And, how can my kids be older than I feel sometimes?

I'm a walking storeroom of facts.....  I've just lost the key to the storeroom door.

Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!

Now if I could only remember who sent this to me, I wouldn't send it back to them, but I would send it to many more!

Now- Have I already sent this to you???????

If so, I'll try not to do it again (for a while.)

That's a good one, Al - thanks so much!

From http://www.selfgrowthtest.com - 06/29/09 - "Asking":

Asking - Go Ahead, Ask for It!
By Judy Davis

As we grow up, we are often told "Don't ask for that"; it's impolite. We are programmed to think that asking for help, support, or direction means that we can't do it ourselves. And frankly this just doesn't make sense.

Like many lessons that were taught to us, this is one that I think we need to outgrow, and the quicker the better. Let me explain. Today I saw the quote by Shakti Gwain that said...

"You create your opportunities by asking for them."

And I believe that's true. How can you generate anything new if you don't ask questions? Is it possible to create opportunities without asking for more information? If you look at any successful person, they have developed the skill of asking for what they want.

They don't do it in a rude way, nor do they do it expecting others to make things happen for them, but they ask. They request help in strategic, well thought-out ways that are MUTUALLY beneficial to the people they ask. They pose the questions that no one else will, and they solicit what they need to move forward with their goals.

The most successful people are masters at finding resources that can connect them to opportunities that they couldn't access on their own, and they do so in a way that isn't selfish or rude. So I raise the question... isn't asking part of moving forward, isn't asking part of creating new opportunities, and isn't asking OK? And contrary to what our grandmas taught us, isn't asking a good thing?

But why, then, if it is a good thing, does it get such a bad rap? Bottom line, most people ASK for help because they don't want to do it themselves. They ask for things that only benefit their interests, and they ask for support because they feel entitled to it. Asking has become the thing to do when you don't feel like doing it yourself. And that's bad.

The ability to ask for something is earned. It's not something you do with strangers, and it's not something you do if there isn't anything "in it" for you. Asking is a skill that has to be learned, and there is an appropriate time to use it.

Asking for help is the perfect way to create new opportunities and move forward as long as you follow these simple guidelines:

* Only ask for help if you are truly unable to do it yourself (no laziness allowed!).
* Do it unselfishly.
* Seek mutually beneficial results.
* Appreciate and express thanks.
* NEVER ask for help from someone you haven't helped before!

By following these guidelines, your simple act of requesting help actually turns itself around, and you give more than you get. And that is what creates success. So ask away, and give even more, and see what the future holds.

Lonely Day

Written by Daron Malakian
(b. 18 July 1975)

(System of a Down, 2005/6)

Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day
Should be banned
It's a day that I can't stand

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life

Such a lonely day
Shouldn't exist
It's a day that I'll never miss
Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life

And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you

Take your hand and walk away

The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
Life

Such a lonely day
And it's mine
It's a day that I'm glad I survived
