Richard Rodgers' 105th Birthday

"What's wrong with sweetness and light? It's been around quite awhile."

- Richard Rodgers
(28 June 1902 - 30 Dec 1979)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today is one of those days which we like to observe each year.  The simplest thing for me to have done was to just rerun it from last year.  After all, we had two very fine versions of it then:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/06-28-06-NNHS-Richard-Rodgers-104th-Birthday.html - (705 kb MP3 version - "No Other Love")

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/06-28-06-NNHS-B-Richard-Rodgers-104th-Birthday.html - (regular version - "Do Re Mi")

But when I stepped into my Magic Shower this morning, Shirley Jones began serenading me with this lovely theme from "Carousel", so what could I do?!?

BIRTHDAYS:

Hit #62,000 was made in the early morning of Thursday, June 28, 2007, but I just barely missed it.

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII -
06/18/07 - "Dear Carol, Love that Green Grass of Home !!!":

Dear Carol,

Please read these few words and see the picture.

Your Friend, Herbie

Is the grass greener on the USA side of the border? Seems so, doesn't it? At least it is in Iraq for our guys who even consider imported USA green grass and soil so sacred they tread barefoot on it before going on a dangerous mission! Now that's what I call real optimism! Or is it the true spirit of Americanism transported to foreign shores? God Bless the USA and our troops standing between us and the enemy!

Semper Fi

I hope the picture will go through for you - of this Army soldier in Iraq with his tiny "plot" of grass in front of his tent. It's heartwarming! Here is a soldier stationed in Iraq, stationed in a big sand box. He asked his wife to send him dirt (U. S. soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet. When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass and the American soil - to bring them good luck.

If you notice, he is even cutting the grass with a pair of scissors. Sometimes we are in such a hurry that we don't stop and think about the little things that we take for granted.

Upon receiving this, please say a prayer for our American soldiers that give and give (and give up) so unselfishly for us.

Thank you so much, Herbie Darlin'! I always do!

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 06/27/07, Late at Night - "Be Careful What You Say":

Excuse the way this looks, I received it this way and its late and I'm tired. They were so funny (to me) and I thought you would enjoy waking up to a few good jokes ! No dirty words !! Yea !!!!!
Love all you guys. Goodnight.

LIFE AFTER DEATH :

"DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER DEATH?" THE BOSS ASKED ONE OF HIS EMPLOYEES.

IT WAS PALM SUNDAY AND, BECAUSE OF A SORE THROAT, FIVE-YEAR-OLD JOHNNY STAYED HOME FROM CHURCH WITH A SITTER. WHEN THE FAMILY RETURNED HOME, THEY WERE CARRYING SEVERAL PALM BRANCHES. THE BOY ASKED WHAT THEY WERE FOR.
"PEOPLE HELD THEM OVER JESUS' HEAD AS HE WALKED BY."
"WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT, THE BOY FUMED, "THE ONE SUNDAY I DON'T GO, HE SHOWS UP!"

*******************************************************************************************
CHILDREN'S SERMON :

ONE EASTER SUNDAY MORNING AS THE MINISTER WAS PREACHING THE CHILDREN'S SERMON, HE REACHED INTO HIS BAG OF PROPS AND PULLED OUT AN EGG.
HE POINTED AT THE EGG AND ASKED THE CHILDREN, "WHAT'S IN HERE?"
"I KNOW!" A LITTLE BOY EXCLAIMED. "PANTYHOSE!! "

***********************************************************************************

SUPPORT A FAMILY :

THE PROSPECTIVE FATHER-IN-LAW ASKED, "YOUNG MAN, CAN YOU SUPPORT A FAMILY?"
THE SURPRISED GROOM-TO-BE REPLIED, "WELL, NO. I WAS JUST PLANNING TO SUPPORT YOUR DAUGHTER. THE REST OF YOU WILL HAVE TO FEND FOR YOURSELVES."

*****************************************************************************************
FIRST TIME USHERS !

A LITTLE BOY IN CHURCH FOR THE FIRST TIME WATCHED AS THE USHERS PASSED AROUND THE OFFERING PLATES.
WHEN THEY CAME NEAR HIS PEW, THE BOY SAID LOUDLY, "DON'T PAY FOR ME DADDY. I'M UNDER FIVE."

************************************************************************************

"OH, I SURE AM HAPPY TO SEE YOU," THE LITTLE BOY SAID TO HIS GRANDMOTHER ON HIS MOTHER'S SIDE. "NOW MAYBE DADDY WILL DO THE TRICK HE HAS BEEN PROMISING US."

THE WATER PISTOL :

WHEN MY THREE-YEAR-OLD SON OPENED THE BIRTHDAY GIFT FROM HIS GRANDMOTHER, HE DISCOVERED A WATER PISTOL.  HE SQUEALED WITH DELIGHT AND HEADED FOR THE NEAREST SINK. I WAS NOT SO PLEASED.
I TURNED TO MOM AND SAID, "I'M SURPRISED AT YOU. DON'T YOU REMEMBER HOW WE USED TO DRIVE YOU CRAZY WITH
WATER GUNS?"
MOM SMILED AND THEN REPLIED....."I REMEMBER!!"

*****************************************************************************************
A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses.
She started her class by saying, "Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!"
After a few seconds, Little Davie stood up.
The teacher said, "Do you think you're stupid, Little Davie?"
"No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!"

*******************************************************************************************

Little Davie watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.
"Why do you do that, Mommy?" he asked.
"To make myself beautiful," said his mother, who then began removing the cream with a tissue.
"What's the matter?" asked Little Davie. "Giving up?"

********************************************************************************************
GRANDMA'S AGE :

LITTLE JOHNNY ASKED HIS GRANDMA HOW OLD SHE WAS.
GRANDMA ANSWERED, "39 AND HOLDING."
JOHNNY THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT, AND THEN SAID, "AND HOW OLD WOULD YOU BE IF YOU LET GO?"

   WILD GIGGLES!!!  Thanks, Joyce!

From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 06/27/07 - "newsletter":

Hi Carol,

I'm enjoying the summer music fest! I'd add Johnny Rivers' "Summer Rain," which played continuously (on WGH, of course) on the loudspeakers at Red's Pier.

Wishing you and all Typhoons a Summer of Love, Chris Starkman

Well, I think we'll be able to manage that one for you, Lady!  Stay tuned!

   Thanks, Chris - for everything!

From Paul Dobie ('66) of CO and DC - 06/28/07 - "Red Skelton":

Carol:

A friend sent this weblink to me and it is just a reminder of how lucky we are as a nation of individuals. As the 4th of July approaches, let us not forget all those that are in “harms way” protecting us and what the Flag stands for. Let us also not forget those that have fallen protecting the Flag. Take care and enjoy.

Speakers on please.

Very important that you listen to the very end!! Eerie!
Take a moment and listen to it (from 1969). How would he have known then that this is what is happening now?

Click on the link, and turn your sound on.

FOR THE FEW WHO DON'T KNOW:
Red Skelton was a movie star and comedian on television back in the 1950s. He created a number of characters, and his show was watched by millions. He did this on his show one evening--back when shows were live.

Ohhh, my goodness! Are we "posta" be all grown-up now, so that when we listen to this we don't have tears streaming down our faces?!?  If so, it's still as I've been saying all this time: "I'm still just a kid."

Thank you so much, Sweetie - for everything! And I'm glad to see you still have those beautiful blue eyes!

06/18/07 - "Dear Carol, For you and your Friends. Your Support Today Will Save a Life":

Dear Carol,

I love the work the ASPCA does. I prefer to support the Humane Society nearest my home. I got my Faithful Hound Dog "Tiger" and one Cat "Tootsie" from The Humane Society near my home. I live alone and believe me they add Sustenance to my life. They give me someone to care for, (No woman would want this dried up Old Marine) BUT, My Hound Dog and Two Cats do, They give me UNRESTRICTED LOVE !!!

By the way my second Cat "Mr. Kitty" came to me as a stray. When he first came around I would call him, "Here Kitty, Kitty" until my Daughter noticed he had the Characteristic Male Attributes, She said I should call him "Mr. Kitty, So that is his name now. My story is long enough SO, My dear, Slow down, Take time to smell the ROSES, They won't bloom forever,

    From Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 06/28/07 - "Fisherman's Wharf":

Long before there was a Fisherman's Wharf, all of the property at the end of Ivy Home Road was Lawson's Oil Docks. This is where many of the Hampton Creek and Sunset Creek fishing boats fueled up and bought ship's stores before heading out to Hampton Roads or out to the Bay, or even out through Cape Henry/Cape Charles into the Atlantic. The point of land upon which it was situated was called Armstrong Point because of the family that owned most of the property from Porter Avenue down to the dock on the right side of Ivy Home Road. I grew up on Porter Avenue and often visited old lady Armstrong. Skip Willis, Jack Hardy, Charlie Karmosky, Bobby Christie, and I spent many hours on those docks just hanging out. On summer days when the docks were closed, we'd sometimes race our bicycles down to the docks and launch straight out into the water off the dock into Hampton Creek. I smoked my first cigarette in the bamboo thatches that grew down near the water just before the docks.

One snowy winter night, three of us built a huge snow wall across Ivy Home Road below Porter Avenue which stopped all the traffic, including the oil trucks that delivered fuel oil to many homes. The cops paid each of us a visit that night. I loved those days.

From Karrin Williams Frankie (Warwick HS - '61) of VA - 06/26/07 - "Calling all Riverside Hospital Graduates":

I just received this email from a high school classmate to pass on. Please pass onto anyone you think might be a nurse or knows someone so they can have a great reunion. With so many people moving or getting married or re-married after graduation, it is hard to find everyone and emailing is a wonderful tool.

Thanks.

Karrin,

I know you have access to other classes besides our own. We are trying to let as many people know about our reunion as possible. Please forward this if it is not too much trouble.

Riverside School of Professional Nursing is having a Grand Reunion of all classes July 21 and July 22, 2007. There will be a luncheon on Saturday and a tour of the new school campus. Saturday night is open for the individual classes to meet. Sunday there will be a family picnic in NN Park, Jefferson Avenue near Ft. Eustis.

If you are a graduate or know someone who is, please help us get the word out so as many as possible will know and be able to attend. e-mail response or questions to:

If I Loved You

~ from the 1945 Stage Musical and 1956 Movie "Carousel"
Music by Richard Rodgers
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II

(Shirley Jones)

If I loved you
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know
If I loved you
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
'Round in circles I'd go

Longin' to tell you but afraid and shy
I'd let my golden chances pass me by

Soon you'd leave me
Off you would go in the mist of day
Never, never to know
How I'd love you
If I loved you

If I loved you
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know
If I loved you
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
'Round in circles I'd go

Longin' to tell you but afraid and shy
I'd let my golden chances pass me by

Soon you'd leave me
Off you would go in the mist of day
Never, never to know
How I'd love you
If I loved you
