Samuel Jay Fox
(28 Oct 1948 - 16 June 2016)

Newport News High School Class of 1966

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

   There is more sad if slightly belated news today.
  Sammy Fox, Valedictorian of the Class of 1966, brother of Barry Fox ('68), Delaney, Olivia, Amelia and Camila, passed away in Litchfield Park, Arizona on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the age of 67.

   He was the cousin of Bobby Fox ('63) of IA and Jeff Fox ('69) of LA.

 From Jeff Fox ('69) of LA - 06/21/16, 5:25 PM - "Passing of Samuel "Sammy" J. Fox":

Don't know if you handle the obit action but my 1st cousin, Samuel J. Fox died this past Friday, June 17, 2016 in Tucson, AZ due to illness. Sammy was the valedictorian of his 1966 Class. Graduated from Duke University. Leaving behind a wife and children.

Thanks for your assistance.
Jeff Fox

   Oh, Jeff! I'm so sorry to learn this sad news!

   Yes, I am the one to handle the obituaries; I often just do not handle them well, as in this instance. Sammy and I were in a number of the same classes and organizations over the years, and I really enjoyed knowing him. I didn't know until now that he was his class valedictorian, but I am certainly not surprised; his intelligence shown around him like a light.

   May his memory be for a blessing always.

Sammy 's family needs to know he achieved something I could never do... He climbed the rope in gym class in 1966! I think my comment at the time was "Damn! Well, if Fox can do it, I can at least TRY harder!" Nope. I never could...

Roland Hamel ('66) posted some pictures of Sam Fox to the Class of 1966 50-year reunion website in the Photo Albums under NNHS Memories.

  Our deepest sympathies are extended to Sammy's family, friends, and classmates at this difficult time.

Whispering Hope

Words and Music by Alice Hawthorne (11 May 1827 - 22 Nov 1902), 1868

"Alice Hawthorne" was really Setimus Winner, one of the most versatile writers of the mid-19th century.
Winner went from the bird calls of "Listen to the Mocking Bird" to the doggerel nonsense
of "Oh, Where, Oh, Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" to the gentle and optimistic "Whispering Hope."

Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard;
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word.

Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done;
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.

Whispering Hope,
Oh, how welcome thy voice,
Making my heart
in its sorrow rejoice.
