Lionel Richie's 59th Birthday

"In life you must be able to discern between who and what is genuine and artificial.
I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I realize that you can't please
everybody all of the time and that sometimes you have to just go for what you know."

Lionel Richie
(b. 20 June 1949)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is the first time here for this birthday celebration as well.

Many Happy Returns, One and All!

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 06/18/08 - "one minute each night ":

I forward a lot of emails but this one I truly believe will make a difference.  Please read and forward.  I'll join you in prayer tonight, and every night, at 9:00 pm.  Take God at his word and just stand back and watch as he heals our lives and this land!!

 Joyce Cahoon

One minute each night

We have never been more desperate than now for God to heal our land. This election is the scariest I remember in my lifetime.

Do you believe we can take God at His word? Call upon His name, then stand back and watch His wonders to behold. This scripture gives us, as Christians, ownership of this land and the ability to call upon God to heal it. I challenge you to do so.

II Chronicles 7:14:  If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

During WWII, there was an advisor to Churchill who organized a group of  people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour  for one minute to collectively pray for the safety of England , its people  and peace. This had an amazing effect as bombing stopped.  There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in America . The United States of America and our citizens need prayer more than ever ! ! !

If you would like to participate: each evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time  (8:00 PM Central, 7:00 PM Mountain, 6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United  States, our troops, our citizens, for peace in the world, the up-coming election, that the Bible will remain the basis for the laws governing our land and that Christianity will grow in the U.S.

If you know anyone who would like to participate, please pass this along.

Someone said if people really understood the full extent of the power we have available through prayer, we might be speechless. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have.

Thank You. Please pass this on to anyone who you think will want to join us.

'...But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.'  (Josh. 24: 15)

 Thanks so much, Joyce!

      From Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC - 06/19/08 - " A true story":

Carol,

The following is a true story sent to me from      Les Puckett ('58 - of VA) ....I could add nothing but laughter !

Sepi aka Dimples

WHY JEFF SHOULD NEVER QUESTION A DRUNK

Jeff was shopping at the local supermarket where he selected:
A half-gallon of 2% milk
A carton of eggs
A quart of orange juice
A head of romaine lettuce
A 2 lb. can of coffee
A 1 lb. package of bacon

As he was unloading his items on the conveyor belt to check out, a drunk standing behind him watched as he placed the items in front of the cashier.

While the cashier was ringing up the purchases, the drunk calmly stated, "You must be single."

Jeff was a bit startled by this proclamation, but was also intrigued by the derelict's intuition, since he was indeed single. He looked at the six items on the belt and saw nothing particularly unusual about his selections that could have tipped off the drunk to his marital status.

Curiosity was getting the better of him, so he said: "Well, you know what, you're absolutely right. But how on earth did you know that?"

The drunk replied, "Cause you're ugly."

   Thanks, Dimples - and Les!

   From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 06/19/08 - "About Life":

About Life

A penny saved is obviously the result of a government oversight.

*************
The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.

**********

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

**********
The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a new replacement for it.

**********
He who hesitates is probably doing the right thing.

********
Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are ' XL.'

**********
If you think there is some good in everybody, you obviously haven't met 'everybody'.

**********
If you can smile when things go wrong, you must have someone else in mind to blame.

**********
The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so that he can tell when he's 'really' in trouble.

**********
There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.

**********
Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together it spells 'Theirs.'

*********

Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

*********
The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

**********
Some people try to turn back their life's odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long, long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

**********
When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to youth, think of Algebra.

***********
You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.

***********

One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.

**********
Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

**********
First you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper. It's even worse when you forget to pull it down.

***********
Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft. Today, it's called golf

*********

If you didn't get this, it's because I forgot to send it.

*********

Lord, Keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth...AMEN..!!

   Thanks, F.A.!

From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA - 06/20/08 - "GIVING UP WINE":

GIVING UP WINE

I was walking down the street when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless woman who asked me for a couple of dollars for dinner.

I took out my wallet, got out ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy wine
with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless woman told me.

"Will you use it to go shopping instead of buying food?" I asked.

"No, I don't waste time shopping," the homeless woman said. "I need to spend all my time
trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on a beauty salon instead of food?" I asked.

"Are you NUTS !" replied the homeless woman. "I haven't had my hair done in 20 years!"

"Well," I said, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead, I'm going to take you out
for dinner with my husband and me tonight."

The homeless woman was shocked! "Won't your husband be furious with you for doing that?
I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."

I said, "That's okay. It's important for him to see what a woman looks like after
she has given up shopping, hair appointments, and wine."

   Thanks, Cookie!

 Hello

Words and Music by Lionel Richie, 1984

I've been alone with you inside my mind
And in my dreams I've kissed your lips a thousand times
I sometimes see you pass outside my door
Hello, is it me you're looking for?

I can see it in your eyes
I can see it in your smile
You're all I've ever wanted, (and) my arms are open wide
'Cause you know just what to say
And you know just what to do
And I want to tell you so much, I love you ...

I long to see the sunlight in your hair
And tell you time and time again how much I care
Sometimes I feel my heart will overflow
Hello, I've just got to let you know

'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely, or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying, I love you ...

Hello, is it me you're looking for?
'Cause I wonder where you are
And I wonder what you do
Are you somewhere feeling lonely or is someone loving you?
Tell me how to win your heart
For I haven't got a clue
But let me start by saying ... I love you
