"Sherman made the terrible discovery that men make about their fathers sooner or later... that the man before him was not
an aging father but a boy, a boy much like himself, a boy who grew up and had a child of his own and, as best he could,
out of a sense of duty and, perhaps love, adopted a role called Being a Father so that his child would have something
mythical and infinitely important: a Protector, who would keep a lid on all the chaotic and catastrophic possibilities of life.”

- Tom Wolfe

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

ALERT:

From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 06/12/07 - "Picnic Cancellation":

I'm sorry to report that the committee has decided to cancel the birthday celebration picnic scheduled for June 23, 2007.  We had established minimum numbers for the event to be feasible and failed to meet the minimum.  It could be the time of year, gas prices, end of school or a number of things.

Those of you who have sent payment in advance will have your checks returned shortly by mail.  If there is interest in having an event in the fall please contact us with your thoughts and a suggested time frame.  We regret taking this action but have no choice under the circumstances.

Dave Arnold

I'm so very sorry to hear this, Dave! Surely this can be rescheduled for later in the fall! Meanwhile, have the 17 of y'all who had already set apart this time considered meeting together somewhere else - someone's home, for instance, for a pot luck? Or even in a restaurant?? It seems like such a dreadful shame not to meet at all....

Meanwhile, I've updated the 60th Birthday page, the front page, and will carry this announcement on these next few Newsletters:

Thanks so much!

A Day for Dad

Things Dad Will Never Say

10.) Well, how about that! I'm lost. Looks like we'll have to stop and ask for directions.

9.) You know, pumpkin. Now that you're thirteen, you'll be ready for unchaperoned car dates. Won't that be fun?

8.) I noticed that all your friends have a certain negative attitude. I like that!

7.) Here's a credit card and the keys to my new car. Go crazy!

6.) What do you mean you want to play football? Figure skating not good enough for you, son?

5.) Your Mother and I are going away for the weekend. You might want to consider throwing a party.

4.) Well, I don't know what's wrong with your car. Probably one of those doo-hickey thingies. You know, that makes it run or something. Just have it towed to a mechanic and pay whatever he asks.

3.) No son of mine is going to live under this roof without an earring. Now, quit your belly aching and let's go to the mall.

2.) What do you want to go and get a job for? I make plenty of money for you to spend.

1.) Father's Day? Ah, don't worry about that. It's no big deal!

   WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Janice!

From Bob Allen ('51) of VA - 06/14/07:

Last weekend I went out in my little boat and watched the Hampton Roads sail event...the local newspaper published absolutely NO photos...very strange and unusual. (I'm sending) you some of the best shots I got ...one of a boat from Pennsylvania now decorates my desktop background.

WOWZERONI!!!  These are gorgeous! Thanks so much, Bob!

I retired about two years ago and have been trying to find my place in the "volunteers" world. I replied to an advertisement asking for help at the Mariners' Museum, where I have been taking classes since March. The Museum has opened a new Monitor Exhibit and folks are coming from all over the US to visit. Last Thursday I passed all the exams and am now a certified "docent" there.

   WOWZERS!!!  Congratulations!

Yesterday I was assigned to work with a bunch of old guys and showed up a few minutes late..."late" to these guys is one hour before the Museum opens...they had all been there drinking coffee and discussing the local downfall of Senator Williams the day before...I introduced myself and immediately the head docent, Dick, asked if I was local, "yes" NNHS class of 51...whereupon every one of the seated 12 got up shook my hand and most announced the year of their graduation from NNHS or said their wife did.. and announced the year. One I recognized as one of my own classmates, Frank Wheeler, from 1951. It was a warm welcome and they each wanted to know what happened to my parents, my sisters , brother and so on. Nice warm welcome from all.

Bob Allen, Class of 1951

Isn't that just a wonderful, happy feeling?!? Thanks for sharing that great warm fuzzy with us, Bob!

  From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 06/16/07 - "I see!":

The following is the transcript of an actual radio conversation in Oct 1995 between a U.S. Navy ship and the British authorities off the Scottish north coast. The transcript was released by the M.O.D. on the 10/10/95.

BRITISH: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid collision.

U.S. Navy: Recommend YOU divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

BRITISH: Negative. YOU will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

U.S. Navy: This is the Captain of U.S. Navy ship, I say again, divert YOUR course.

BRITISH: Negative, I say again, you will have to divert your course.

U.S. Navy: THIS IS THE CAPTAIN OF THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET, WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S 15 DEGREES NORTH OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

BRITISH: We are a lighthouse. F**K OFF.

Raymond D. Coffield

WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Wayne Honey! I think there's a lesson in humility for us all in there!

My Father's Eyes

- Eric Clapton

Sailing down behind the sun,
Waiting for my prince to come.
Praying for the healing rain
To restore my soul again.

Just a toerag on the run.
How did I get here?
What have I done?
When will all my hopes arise?
How will I know him?
When I look in my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
When I look in my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Then the light begins to shine
And I hear those ancient lullabies.
And as I watch this seedling grow,
Feel my heart start to overflow.

Where do I find the words to say?
How do I teach him?
What do we play?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That's when I need them,
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
That's when I need my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

Then the jagged edge appears
Through the distant clouds of tears.
I'm like a bridge that was washed away;
My foundations were made of clay.

As my soul slides down to die.
How could I lose him?
What did I try?
Bit by bit, I've realized
That he was here with me;
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.

My father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
I looked into my father's eyes.
My father's eyes.
