John David Sealey, Jr.

NEWPORT NEWS - Lt. Col. John David Sealey, Jr., USAF Retired, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2013 with his family by his side.
John was a lifetime Newport News resident. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Defense Communications Officer and received the Bronze Star and several other commendations for his service during the Vietnam War.

John was a member of the Rotary Club of Oyster Point where he received the Rotarian of the Year award, and was an Eagle Scout.

John will be missed and remembered for his great love of family and dedication to his community and country.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Jane Sealey; his daughter, Sylvia Hodges, and her husband, Clark, of Ft. Pierce, FL; his son, John Dee Sealey, of Bealeton; one granddaughter, Kaitlin Via; and a loved extended family.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 PM Monday, June 17, 2013 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, June 18, 2013 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Clarence Hilling officiating. Entombment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Condolences may be left at http://www.wjsmithandsonfh.com.

Jane, I was sorry to hear of John's passing. We grew up in east end, he on 35th Street, I on 33rd. We were in troop seven of the boy scouts. Margaret's and my prayers are with you and your family.

I was so very saddened to hear about Mr. Sealey's passing. I am the nurse that would come visit both Mr. and Mrs. Sealey at 3 month intervals, and always enjoyed our lively conversations. He used to kid me when I would ring the doorbell.....as he came to the door, he would say, "Oh, it's you again"....always with a smile on his face. I hope I will still be able to see Ms. Jane as she is still with Griswold Home Care. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all. Mr. Sealey had a very special place in my heart!

Sorry to learn of John's passing. Had a lot of fun with John during his political campaigns for Newport News City Council and The Virginia House of delegates. Rest peacefully, John. We will try to get those Democrats corrected.

There are so many memories I could share. When running for City Council in 1990, I visited several Rotary groups to meet like minded individuals. I ran into John at Oyster Point. He fascinated me as not only did we share similar politics; I was taken with John's ability to "read people." He could see right through to someone's character. If he liked someone, you could rest assured the person was one of quality and high standards. He was straight forward in his communication and you knew exactly what he thought. I am blessed to have been able to call John my friend and to have had the pleasure of spending every Friday morning sharing stories and ideas. I moved my membership to Oyster Point Rotary after our first meeting. To me, John's perspective was invaluable. Newport News and all of us have lost someone quite special in John Sealey. I am really going to miss him.
