"Kisses kept are wasted; Love is to be tasted.
There are some you love, I know; Be not loathe to tell them so.
Lips go dry and eyes grow wet Waiting to be warmly met.
Keep them not in waiting yet; Kisses kept are wasted.”

- Edmund Vance Cooke
(5 June 1866 - 18 Dec 1932)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is one of the few Beatles songs not written by John and Paul, but it's a goodie, nonetheless!  I mean, any song that talks about kisses has to be good, mais oui?!?

BIRTHDAYS:

A Happy Saturday Birthday to one of our younger babies, Roberta Hilsdon ('70) of GA.  Have a great day, Lady!

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Happy-Birthday.html

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 06/15/06 - "Responding to    Jamie
Douglas Bacon's latest":

Carol:

I figure its about time to provide you with Janie's senior picture, as published in The 1954 Warwick (annual). Listed then as Janie Leigh Slack - known today as Janie Slack Lee (she opted not to be known as Janie Leigh Lee)!

Such a pretty baby, she is!

  Janie Leigh Slack
  1954 Warwick

Janie remembers all of the people Jamie mentioned that were in her mother's class. In addition, one of the Deese boys - Henry - was also a member of our high school class. Just recently, I saw in a shipyard publication that he had recently celebrated 50 years of service there.

Another interesting connection with our high school class and Parkview is a WHS classmate of ours. Jackie Adams Spangler attended Parkview, along with Janie, and eventually became the Principal there! I think she may have been the last principal of that school; in any case she served later on in a similar capacity in Hampton's public school system.

But more importantly - and to the envy of the rest of our class, especially the ladies, she has stayed the same size - as can be seen in this picture of her alongside a memorabilia exhibit she created for our 50th reunion (almost two years ago).

Oh, my, and  WOWZERONI!!!  As my mama would have said, "She doesn't cheat fair!"

Perhaps some of your younger correspondents might remember her. She and her husband - another WHS, Class of 54 grad - live in the Williamsburg area.

If that's not enough stuff - here's a picture of a seventh grade class at Hilton Grammar School. Jackie is in the second row, fifth child from the right, sporting pretty much the same hair style. And I'm directly behind her!

Switching subjects, here's a suggestion for you, Carol.

The mention of 'drive-ins' in your latest newsletter caused me to remember that there were two distinctly different kinds of drive-ins on the Peninsula 'way back when. The park-n-whatever movie theatres - and the meet, eat and greet kind. In the 50's, there were three (now all long gone) that I can recall that were popular with the high school set: Monty's (4309 Virginia Avenue), the B. & M. Drive-in (3716 Kecoughtan Road) and the W&S (across from the old entrance to Huntington Park). Considered the 'territory of NNHS, HHS and WHS, respectively.

Monty's was owned and operated for many years by the Monfalcone family - some of whom undoubtedly went to NNHS. A couple of them were also Apprentices - I once worked with Frank M.

Jane Monfalcone Simmons is a member if the Class of 1961.

I found all three - thank you - and others listed on your page entitled "Our Old Stomping Grounds". May I suggest you cross-reference them to the drive-in page? And perhaps add some/all of the following:

I never knew (or thought to ask) what B. & M. stood for - the owners, one would suppose...I suppose. Perhaps someone out there knows.

W&S - that one I know. Co-owned by two NN businessmen named Wertheimer and Stone. Edgar Wertheimer also owned and operated a men's clothing store in Hilton - rival of The Young Men's Shop and Spigel's College Shop in downtown NN. I'm not sure what else Mr. Stone did, but one of his children - Mary Sue - was yet another member of WHS - Class of 1954. Not that it did any of us any 'discount' good at the W&S...

That's an excellent suggestion, Bill, and one that surely would never have occurred to me.  It will take a while for me to accomplish that, and that while is more than likely not going to be found over this weekend, but I'll try to get to it very soon.

The Peninsula was a small world back then, to be sure!

'Deed it was, Bill!  Thanks so much!

From Bill Black ('66) of GA - 06/15/06 - "H&DE on the Victory Garden":

Check your local listings, but I'm told by "our people in Boston" that the Hills & Dales Estate segment will be on the Victory Garden this weekend.  Saturday, for most people, but check your local listings.  And nawww... I ain't in camera range, but I was coaching the host of the show during his opening, as he talked and walked ( always difficult, even for me ) introducing the segment in front of the house.  I was also privileged to carry the twelve foot ladder for the overhead shots.

Make sure you print clearly when you're filling in your nominations for an Emmy.

Best,
Your non-union grip in LaGrange.

This is soooo cool, Bill!  My listings better cooperate with me.  If I don't find this, I'm going to be VERY upset......

   Thanks, Bill!

  Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 06/15/06 - "WVEC-TV; Bungles The Clown":

Hi, Carol:

TYPHOON Thanks to    Edna Whitcomb Harrison ('65 - of VA) and    Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA). My wife    (Eva Ellis Madagan - '61 - of FL), who is still a kid at heart, has the "Bungles Wave" down pat. In fact, she still uses it when our kids visit and then depart, and has been seen trying to teach our grandchildren this distinctive wave.

Dave almost got it right in his description of the wave as the show closed out on WVEC-TV. He addressed the camera, both palms facing the camera, and while flexing both "pinkies" he would cross his forearms and then flex them outwards and repeat the arm movement and pinkie movements until the sign off.

The good Captain did spell Joe Foulkes' name correctly, so he gets "three atta boys" for his attention to detail.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

   Thanks, Joe!

From Eric Huffstutler (Bethel HS - '75) of VA - 06/16/06:

Re: Poopdeck Pappy (WAVY-TV) - also seen as "Poop Deck Pappy"

Like you said, there seems to be very little to find on this character. Possibly the station's library/archives may have something? Here is what little I did find:

WAVY-TV, Channel 10, signed on the air September 1, 1957, as the NBC affiliate in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Hail, Poopdeck Pappy - NBC affiliate WAVY, which called itself  "Wonderful WAVY" when it signed on 40 years ago, celebrates four decades on Channel 10 with a looking-back special Wednesday at 8 p.m. Names from the past include Lloyd Dobyns, Lee Leonard, Dick Lamb, John Wilson, Len Hathaway, Mark Thomas, Kurt Webster and Horace McManus as Poopdeck.

Around 1980 or so Norfolk's WAVY-TV 10 actually burned tapes of their old shows/newscasts including the kiddie show "Poopdeck Pappy" and "WAVY Eyewitness News".

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 06/16/06:

CAROL

THERE WAS TALK IN THIS LAST NEWSLETTER ABOUT DIFFERENT PERSONS ON TV AND RADIO. I ALWAYS LOVED TO HEAR DICK LAMB ON WGH RADIO.

BACK A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN JIM BAKKER GOT OUT OF PRISON, I WAS IN A BOOK STORE HERE IN TEXAS AND IT SO HAPPENED HE WAS THERE SIGNING HIS BOOK THAT HE WROTE TITLED, "I WAS WRONG".  WELL, I REMEMBER WHEN HE AND TAMMY HAD A PUPPET SHOW ON PAT ROBERTSON'S PROGRAM IN PORTSMOUTH, VA. I WAS SINGING WITH A TRIO AND WE SANG ON A TV SHOW THERE AT THE TV STATION. THIS WAS LIKE IN THE MIDDLE 60'S, BUT I TOLD JIM ABOUT THAT WHEN HE WAS SIGNING MY BOOK, AND HE COULD NOT BELIEVE HE WOULD SEE SOMEONE FROM THAT FAR BACK THAT WOULD REMEMBER THAT TIME. HE AND TAMMY WERE IN THEIR EARLY 20'S.

GLENN DYE 60
TYPHOON FOREVER.

Thank you, Glenn!    What a great story!  I added it to the television page as well:

For those of y'all who don't know, Glenn is an accomplished gospel singer.  Click on his name to hear him sing!

From One of my Famous Marines -    Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater
during WWII - 06/16/06 - "Dear Carol, God bless our Veterans and God bless the USA":

Dear Carol,

I am so proud to be a Veteran, It makes me very happy to pass along this message to all Americans. God Bless Our Troops and God Bless the USA.

Your Friend, Herbie

And I'm so proud to know you, Herbie!  Thank you so much - for everything!  SEMPER FIDELIS!

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,

who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN,
who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM, O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

I don't know if you saw this in the news but it really impressed me. Funny, our US Senate/House took two days off as they couldn't work because of the expected storm.

On the ABC evening news, it was reported (in September of 2003) that, because of the dangers from Hurricane Isabel approaching Washington DC, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.

They respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!"

Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment; it was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson.
The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.

We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service, no matter where they serve.

God Bless them all!!!

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 06/16/06:

Hey, looking at that newsletter (and the Breast Cancer spot) reminded me of my niece Jessie and her boyfriend David's website for Leukemia/Lymphoma, that has a picture of my dad on it.

http://www.active.com/donate/leukemiacupsc/rcscJBryan

It's very nice, but kinda sad to realize why his picture is there. Jessie is my sister's youngest and she works for a medical group or cancer society or she's an asparagus taster for the Library of Congress, something in South Carolina.

bddbd

That's a wonderful spot, David.  Thank you for sharing it with us.   Your dad is such a fine looking man.

I had not mentioned his illness here before, as I'm ever fearful of overstepping privacy lines, and betraying confidences, and wasn't sure how much you wanted to tell the world or when.

I would certainly encourage the rest of y'all to make generous donations to Jessie's page.  These illnesses are non-discriminatory and strike without warning.  The sooner a cure is found, the better.

And David, you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

I've added this link to my list of Favorites on my silly Cluckmeat web page.  That way, I won't lose it:

   Thanks again, Gorgeous!

  From Me ('65) of NC - 06/16/06:

I came across this quotation the other day:

"One forgets words as one forgets names. One's vocabulary needs constant fertilizing or it will die."

 – Evelyn Waugh, 28 Oct 1903 – 10 Apr 1966, English Writer

It caused me to consider many different things.  It also made me think how certain key words have become irrevocably attached in my mind to some of y'all.  My family members will tell you that no matter what the subject, it makes me think of y'all, but they only say that because.....  well, because it's so true.......

Be that as it may, no matter what other people and images these words evoke, these are the first names which come to my mind:

"Marine" -   Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA
"WWII" -
    Herb Hice of MI
"Veteran" -
  David Whitley ('67) of VA
"Patriotism" -
  Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
"Honor" -
    Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA

There are more.  There are many more - "Band", "Basketball", "Compassion", "Dancing", "Football", "Fun", "Music", "Renaissance", "Singing", "Thoughtfulness", "Track", "White Knight".  I have long, long lists.

Thank you all for the all the ways in which you've touched and enriched my life.

Boys

Words and Music by Luther Dixon, Wes Farrell

(The Beatles, 1963)

I've been told when a boy kiss a girl
Take a trip around the world
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey
Yes they say you do

My girl says when I kiss her lips
Get the thrill thru fingertips
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey
Yeah she said you do

Well I talk about boys
Don't you know I mean boys
Well I talk about boys now
Ah, boys
Well I talk about boys now
What a bundle of joy

My girl says when I kiss her lips
Get the thrill thru fingertips
Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey
Yeah she said you do

Well I talk about boys
Don't you know I mean boys
Well I talk about boys now
Ah, boys
Well I talk about boys now
What a bundle of joy
