Edvard Grieg's 170th Birthday

It is great to have friends when one is young, but indeed it is
still more so when you are getting old. When we are young,
friends are, like everything else, a matter of course.
In the old days we know what it means to have them.

- Edvard Grieg
(15 June 1843 - 04 Sep 1907)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I was struck once more by the poignancy of this quotation from Grieg, and even more so when I realized that he was barely 64 when he died.  I mean, YOWZERONI, that's not even old!

But isn't this just the most delightful music?!?

From Malcolm Davis ('65) of VA - 06/14/13, 8:16 PM - "    Jamey (Douglas) Bacon ('66 - of VA) Mission Project progress report":

The selected start date for laying the bricks is August 1, 2013. This was chosen in consultation with Mr. Ken Thompson the proprietor of "Four Seasons Home Repair" who will be the brains of the project. Ken and I have been busy getting an Easement Permit because a total of 16 feet of the driveway sits on an easement. I purchased a construction bond from      H. P. Lucas's ('65 - of VA) insurance office to meet the city requirement and Ken had to add two specific clauses to his liability insurance to meet the requirement to obtain a permit. This has occupied me this week.

I have reserved the excavator for the construction date. Remember that the excavator is donated by "Grand Rental Station's " Kevin Coats. The physical preparation of the site will be done by "Four Seasons Home Repair" who is also volunteering to help. I have purchased the bricks with donations from the Typhoons and others who responded to this need. It looks like we will be ready willing and able to do the job on August 1st. Pray for good weather and for Jamey's health and happiness.

That is SUPER fabulous news, Malcolm! Thanks so much to both you and your dear  Polly (Norris Davis - '65) for all your valiant efforts!

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 06/14/13 - "Easy peanut butter cookie recipe":

The easy peanut butter cookie recipe has another virtue in addition to requiring only three ingredients and being simple to do: it's gluten-free. (It also is delicious, and vanishes quickly around here. Chocolate chips are a nice addition.)

      OOOH, YEAH! Thanks, Domi!

From - 06/14/13:

After every flight, pilots fill out a form called a gripe sheet, which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction. The mechanics read and correct the problem, and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken, and the pilot reviews the gripe sheets before the next flight.

Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor!

Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and problems as submitted by Qantas pilots and the solution recorded by maintenance engineers.

(P = the problem logged by the pilot.)

(S = the solution and action taken by the engineers.)
