Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   
  We have still more sad news today.  
   Betty Cooper Swartz, Class of 1964, passed away on Thursday, June 09, 2011 at her home in Smithfield.

                   Betty Cooper Swartz


SMITHFIELD - Betty C. Swartz passed away from this world into the arms of her Lord and Savior on June 9, 2011, at her home in Smithfield, Va., after an extensive battle with ovarian cancer.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many in the community. During her extended illness, the cancer would weaken her physically but her love of life and sharing God's goodness never faltered. She showed us how to live fully and courageously with difficult treatments and an unknown future. She loved life by spending time in the mountains of Covington, Va., in her cabin, which she called God's home and being with her wonderful family and friends. She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church.



Betty is survived by her husband, Michael W. Swartz; son, Jerry S. Gary Jr. and his wife, Shari, all of Smithfield, Va.; son, Jeffrey W. Gary and grandson, Cody Gary of Hampton, Va.; her sister, Joan Gary and her husband, Harry Gary of Gloucester, Va. She is also survived by a brother- in-law, Eugene R. Swartz Jr. and his wife, Vicki of Knoxville, Tenn.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, June 15, 2011, by Dr. Donald Rhoton, at Smithfield Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Vincent de Paul Back Door Ministry, Newport News; or Smithfield Baptist Church Homeless Shelter.

I remember Betty well from about the 2nd grade at Briarfield School through NNHS. We shared classes off and on as well as dances at the Highland Court tennis court & the Rec. center on Hilton Blvd. I have only good memories of her and I hope that her family can find consolation in their memories of her.

Betty was one of the SWEETEST persons I have ever known. Although I did not see her often, whenever we did cross paths, it was like we were girls at the Parkview Community Center again. I regret that we have lost her loving presence and I will miss knowing she is here. My heart is with her family.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Betty. We attended elementary school and high school together and were in the NNHS graduating class of 1964. Betty was one of the most pleasant people I have known. She was so helpful at Riverside during the numerous times my Dad was admitted through the ER. My prayers are with the family. Jerry, Shari, Jeff and Cody,
We are so sorry to hear about your mom. She was a very special lady. She is going to missed by all, but she is looking down on all of us with that smile and waiting on us now. And we will all see her again someday soon.
She was so helpful to us when we took our mom through the emergency room.
Your mom and dad both were so helpful when Daddy died. Red and I have never forgotten that.
You guys know where we live if you should need someone to talk to and need any help with anything. Give us a call.

Mike and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Betty's passing. I worked in the ED at Riverside with her for many years. Betty was a wonderful woman with so much personality and class. There was never any doubt that she loved her family and spoke of them on a daily basis. She was an inspiration and will be missed. I pray that God has his arms wrapped around you through this difficult time. She will forever be in your hearts.

Betty was a strong person to stay and fight for so long with this terrible disease. It goes to show you what kind of person she is to endure so much pain and still act like everything is ok.
