06/11/10 - NNHS Newsletter -
Jacques Cousteau's 100th Birthday

“If we were logical, the future would be bleak, indeed.
But we are more than logical. We are human beings,
and we have faith, and we have hope, and we can work.”

- Jacques-Yves Cousteau
(11 June 1910 - 25 June 1997)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

It's time for another birthday celebration. Celebrate along with TCM.

BONUS #1 - - Jacques Cousteau - What's My Line, September 16, 1956

BONUS #2 - - Jacques Cousteau - Calypso (music by John Denver)

"Under the Sea" is a song from Disney's 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid, composed by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and is heavily influenced by the Calypso style of the Caribbean. The song was performed in the film by Samuel E. Wright.

The song is a plea by the crab Sebastian imploring Ariel to remain sea-bound, and resist her desire to become a human in order to spend her life with the prince with whom she has fallen in love. Sebastian warns of the struggles of human life while at the same time expounding the benefits of a care-free life underwater.

1.       From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 06/09/10 - "Reunion Notice":

If you could find time, please post a notice of the next reunion in a prominent area in the next few newsletters.  Thanks for your help.

EEK! I thought it was so posted! Much activity occurs only in my "mind", I'm afraid..... Hang on, Dave!

2.  From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 06/10/10, 7:19 PM - "Hey!"

Hey Carol!

Hope you are doing well! I was wondering what newsletter the reunion info was in. I haven’t seen it, although I have missed a few. OR are people just contacting Dave? Don’t you think the info should be included? I don’t know, but I never saw the $$ info or anything!

Are you coming?

Hey, Lady! I've been better, I must say.....

The reunion notice first appeared here:

45-Year Reunion of the NNHS Class of 1965

The Reunion Committee of the Class of 1965 is pleased to announce the plans for the 45-Year Reunion on October 15 and 16, 2010.  As we began planning for this event we were contacted by many class members concerned about the potential costs involved.  The economy has certainly been poor and is a factor in all decisions.  For those that have to travel the expense for that is a further consideration.  We've also heard from a few classmates that have never made it to a previous reunion, and wanted to get them here.

We made the decision that the most important reason for the reunion is to provide an opportunity to gather and catch up with our friends.  This weekend will be casual as well as easy on the budget.  Friday evening we will meet at R.J.'s Restaurant and Sports Bar.  This location has a large collection of athletic photos and memorabilia from NNHS (and a few of those other schools).  Each person will be able to order food and drink from the menu, and R.J. has agreed to reserve a section for our group.  The only cost will be what you choose to eat and drink.  The company will be priceless.

Saturday will be spent at Newport News Park.  We've reserved a group shelter that can seat 150 people with sufficient cover to take care of any weather concerns.  If you made it to the 55th Birthday Party you'll recall it was held at the Park in one of the smaller shelters.  The facility we're using this time is a new addition and will give us lots of flexibility to meet and reminisce.  The cost of this event is $15.00 per person through August 31, 2010.  After that date the cost will be $20.00 per person.  The charge for Saturday will cover your food and beverages.  Checks should be made payable to NNHS Class of 1965, and mailed to Dave Arnold, 153 Exmoor Court, Williamsburg, VA 23185-3863.  He may also be reached at  757 618-6646, or Once funds have been received you'll be contacted with a confirmation and additional information.  If you know of members who don't have access to the web site please get in touch with them and encourage them to come to the reunion.

We'll also be posting a listing of hotels in the area of our two locations.  By making your own arrangements you'll be able to control some of your costs for the event.  This will also minimize the amount of travel to get to the venues.

Finally, this will be an open reunion Each year we lose members of the class, as do those before and after ours.  We were once a big family regardless of graduating class and we'd like to continue that past history.  We cordially invite any of the Typhoon Nation to join us on October 15th and 16th.  We look forward to seeing you then.

The '65 Reunion Committee

It was followed by my Famous Last Words, "I'll be adding this to the Reunion Page soon! ".

And then, of course, I never did.....

But I will soon. And no, I'll not be able to make it.

Thanks for the nudge, Sarah Sugah!

From ArcaMax Jokes - 06/10/10:

The Good Old Days

Grandpa and Grandma were sitting in their porch rockers watching the beautiful sunset and reminiscing about "the good old days," when Grandma turned to Grandpa and said, "Honey, do you remember when we first started dating and you used to just casually reach over and take my hand?"

Grandpa looked over at her, smiled and obligingly took her aged hand in his.

With a wry little smile, Grandma pressed a little farther, "Honey, do you remember how after we were engaged, you'd sometimes lean over and suddenly kiss me on the cheek?"

Grandpa leaned slowly toward Grandma and gave her a lingering kiss on her wrinkled cheek.

Growing bolder still, Grandma said, "Honey, do you remember how, after we were first married, you'd kind of nibble on my ear?"

Grandpa slowly got up from his rocker and headed into the house. Alarmed, Grandma said, "Honey, where are you going?"

Grandpa replied, "To get my teeth!"

Under the Sea

Music by Alan Menken (b. 22 July 1949)

Words by Howard Ashman (17 May 1950 - 14 Mar 1991)

From the Disney movie,
The Little Mermaid, 1989

(Ariel, listen to me. The human world, it's a mess.
Life under the sea is better than anything they got up there.)

The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else's lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin' for?

Under the sea, under the sea
Darling it's better down where it's wetter
Take it from me
Up on the shore they work all day
Out in the sun they slave away
While we're devoting full time to floating
Under the sea, ha ha...

Down here all the fish is happy
As after the waves they roll
The fish on the land ain't happy
They sad 'cause they in the bowl!
But fish in the bowl is lucky
They in for a worser fate
One day when the boss get hungry
Guess who goin' be on the plate?

Wo-no, under the sea
Under the sea
Nobody beat us, fry us and eat us
In frickazee
We what the land folks loves to cook
Under the sea we off the hook
We've got no troubles, life is the bubbles
Under the sea (under the sea)
Under the sea (under the sea)
Since life is sweet here, we got the beat here
Naturally (naturally-ee-ee-ee)
Even the sturgeon and the ray
They get the urge and start to play
We've got the spirit, you've got to hear it
Under the sea

The lute play the flute
The carp play the harp
The plaice play the bass and they soundin' sharp
The bass play the brass
The chub play the tub
The fluke is the duke of soul (yeah)
The ray, he can play the lings on the strings
The trout acting out
The blackfish he sings
The smelt and the sprat
They know where it's at
And oh, that blowfish blow!

Yeah, under the sea
Under the sea
When the sardine begin the beguine
It's music to me (music is to me)
What do they got, a lot of sand?
We've got a hot crustacean band
Each little clam here know how to jam here
Under the sea
Each little slug here cutting a rug here
Under the sea
Each little snail here know how to wail here
That's why it's hotter under the water
Yeah, we in luck here down under the muck here
Under the sea
