Down on the Corner

“None of us knows what the next change is going to be, what unexpected opportunity
is just around the corner, waiting a few months or a few years
to change all the tenor of our lives.”

- Kathleen Norris

 (16 July 1880 - 18 Jan 1966)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This song seemed appropriate for a Friday night in June.

BONUS - - Down on the Corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1969 recording (no video)

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 06/05/09, 2:31 PM - "Update on   Jerry (Allen - '65 - of VA - and     Monty Phillips - '62 - of VA)":

Jerry is doing, "generally", pretty well, but will have surgery on his left knee AGAIN.  He will be out of commission for several weeks.  This means that we will have to cancel our plans for Myrtle Beach July 4th through 7th.  We were to check in Saturday afternoon and check out Wednesday morning. If anyone is interested in going in our place, or if you know someone else who might be, at a cost of less than $100 a night, let me know.
The resort is called the Harbor Lights which is located on the Inland Waterway and across the street from the Hard Rock Amusement Park.  There will be fireworks and fun close by.  The accommodations are:
1 bedroom deluxe that sleeps 4
Full kitchen
Dining area
Living room
Balcony (2nd floor)
On the lake
To see the resort, go to and look for the blue circle that says GO.  Then click on Learn more and the locate resorts tab, then find Harbor Lights.  You can take a virtual tour of the one bedroom unit. You can also go to the photo gallery and see shots of the whole resort including the indoor pool, outdoor pool with lazy river, the lakes, etc.
It would be great if we could help someone else enjoy this place.  We have been there the last two or three years now.  On  July 4th, instead of fighting crowds, we sit by the pool with hamburgers, float around the lazy river (pool), and watch fireworks and boats going by on the Inland Waterway from poolside.
Love ya!
Monty is "hanging in there".  This is his off week from chemo.  He goes again next Wednesday.  I am so glad that school is out for the summer.  Yippeeeeee!

Oh, my! I'm sorry to hear that your sweet husband has to go back to the hospital - and that you'll miss your much needed vacation. You and Jerry and Monty will continue to be in our prayers, Dearest Judy!

Best wishes on passing on your reservations, Sweetie-Pies!

From Curt Overman ('59) of VA - 06/02/09 - "Typhoon Class of 59":

Dear Carol,

Several members of the Typhoon class of 59 are trying to see if there is any interest in a 50-year reunion.
They would ask that members contact one of the people listed below to express their interest and ideas.
Mary Catherine Todd    Telephone 757-596-4347
Margaret Powell Bryant   Telephone 757-826-6397   Email
Mary Jones Lenhart              Email
Curtis Overman             Email

They would ask that they contact one of the above before July 1 so that plans may be made.  It is anticipated that the reunion itself would be in either September or October.  The form and venue would depend on the response they get.

Thank you for all your hard work!

Curtis Overman

Dear Carol,

Thought you might add to your collections two items I found during a spring cleanout.  No need to send them back.

Hope you and Paul are doing O.K.  We're always with you in our thoughts!

Take care and God bless!

George Helliesen

George, could you hear me squealing all the way from Illinois to Michigan?!? What a double treasure!!! Thank you so very much!

I've posted this second gem here as well:

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 06/04/09 - "Hi sweet lady...":

You really do know how to make me cry...I had to click on u-tube and listen to all the versions of Ashokan Farewell.  That has to be THE most beautiful tune in the world!

Thanks, Jean, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I tend to get a little weepy this time of year myself.....

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 06/04/09 - "Rules For Being Human":

Have A Nice Weekend.

Rules for being Human - by Dr. Cherie Carter-Scott

You will receive a body.
You may like it or hate it,
but it's yours to keep
for the entire period.

You will learn lessons.
You are enrolled in a full-time,
informal school called life.

There are no mistakes, only lessons.
Growth is a process of trial, error
and experimentation.
The "failed" experiments are as much
a part of the process as the experiments
that ultimately "work".

Lessons are repeated until they are learned.
A lesson will be presented to you in various forms
until you have learned it.
When you have learned it,
you can go on to the next lesson.

Learning lessons does not end.
There is no part of life that doesn't
contain it's lessons.
If you're alive,
there are still lessons to be learned.

"There" is no better than "here".
When your "there" has become "here",
you will simply obtain another "there"
that will again look better than "here".

Other people are merely mirrors of you.
You can not love or hate something
about another person unless it reflects to you
something you love or hate about yourself.

What you make of your life is up to you.
You have all the tools and resources you need.
What you do with them is up to you.
The choice is yours.

   Thanks, Shari!

Down on the Corner

Words and Music by John Fogerty
(b. 28 May 1945)

- Creedence Clearwater Revival, 1969

Early in the evenin' just about supper time,
Over by the courthouse they're starting to unwind.
Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up.
Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp.

Down on the corner, out in the street,
Willy and the poorboys are playin';
Bring a nickel; tap your feet.

Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile,
Blinky, thumps the gut bass and solos for a while.
Poorboy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo.
Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo.

You don't need a penny just to hang around,
But if you've got a nickel, wont you lay your money down?
Over on the corner there's a happy noise.
People come from all around to watch the magic boy.
