Do You Want to Know a Secret?

Never seek to tell thy love, Love that never told can be;
For the gentle wind does move Silently, invisibly.

I told my love, I told my love, I told her all my heart;
Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears, Ah! she did depart!

Soon as she was gone from me, A traveler came by,
Silently, invisibly, He took her with a sigh.”

- William Blake
(28 Nov 1757 - 12 Aug 1827)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Let's see if we really have any secrets to divulge today.....   ‹(•¿•)›

BONUS - - Do You Want to Know a Secret? - The Beatles, 1963

"Do You Want to Know a Secret" is a song by the Beatles from the 1963 album Please Please Me, sung by George Harrison. In the United States, it was the first top ten song to feature Harrison as a lead singer, reaching number 2 on the Billboard chart in 1964 as a single released by Vee-Jay, VJ 587. The song reached the #1 position on Billboard in 1981 and #2 in the United Kingdom in a cover version by Stars on 45 as part of a medley. Alvin and the Chipmunks covered the song for their 1964 album The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles Hits.

"Do You Want to Know a Secret" was primarily written by John Lennon, but credited to McCartney–Lennon. The song was inspired by "I'm Wishing",[1] a tune from Walt Disney’s 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which Lennon's mother, Julia Lennon, would sing to him as a child. The first two lines of the song in Disney's movie ("Want to know a secret? Promise not to tell?") come right after the opening lyrics ("You'll never know how much I really love you... You'll never know how much I really care...").[2][3] McCartney said it was a "50-50 collaboration written to order", i.e., for Harrison to sing.[4]

In 1980, Lennon said that he gave "Do You Want to Know a Secret" to Harrison to sing because "it only had three notes and he wasn't the best singer in the world", but added "he has improved a lot since then."[3] Harrison sang two songs on Please Please Me, this song by Lennon–McCartney and "Chains" by Goffin/King. "Don't Bother Me" from With The Beatles, was the first Beatles song composed solely by Harrison.[5]

The song was recorded during a ten-hour session on 11 February 1963 along with nine other songs for Please Please Me.[6]

"Do You Want to Know a Secret" was released a year later as a single by Vee-Jay in the United States on 23 March 1964, reaching the number two spot behind another Beatles song, "Can't Buy Me Love" in Billboard, reaching number three on the Cash Box chart, but reaching number one for two weeks in the chart published by the Teletheatre Research Institute...

June 02, 1941 - The Massacre of Kondomari: German paratoopers murdered Greek civilians in the village of Kondomari. The shooting was the first of a long series of mass reprisals in Crete and was orchestrated by Generaloberst Kurt Student, in retaliation for the participation of Cretans in the Battle of Crete which had ended with the surrender of the island only two days earlier. Men, women and children were forced to gather in the village square. Then, a number of hostages was selected among the men while women and children were released. The hostages were led to the surrounding olive groves and later fired upon in cold blood. The exact number of the victims is unclear. According to German records, a total of 23 men were killed but other sources raise the toll to about 60.

June 02, 1944 - The United States began "shuttle bombing" in Operation Frantic. The operation was created solely to destroy Germany's war economy.

TODAY IN 1963:

Tornado! We're in the basement. The neighbor's tree in the front yard came down as we were unloading groceries. So. We stopped.

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 06/01/13 - "Howareya?":

Hey Ms. Carol,

Got the biggest old headache, also getting my teeth worked on and dealing with the aches and pains of this old house, which made me think of you. Seems you have traversed the 'joys' of life more painfully then I would like for you, but you've done it with grace and good humor and always a "smile" for everyone. Your faith is strong and you show it in the way you live. It speaks volumes without the need for lectures. It is what, I believe, Our Lord had in mind.

I love you, Carol, and I don't care if you want to hear it or not! You have been a friend in my loneliness and sorrow and I do try to repay you by playing it forward every chance I get. You've made an impact on this earth, I hope you know it.

Much love, Linda May '66

Thank you so much, Linda May - what kind words of love! I really appreciate them!  It beats hearing, "Why don't you quit annoying me, you dreadful old hag?!?" every time!

I hope you're feeling MUCH better soon!

From Madeleine Ferrer Donovan of TN - 05/29/13 - "Bless Your Dead Heart":

Harty Family History:

"All of the information shared below was given to me by my Third Cousin, twice removed,         Mr. Paul Hampton Harty, Jr. This man is a treasure and I hope to meet him very soon! Thank you, Paul for all of the time you have invested in digging up our family roots..."

Thank you so much, Madeleine! You're a wise and sagacious woman with great insights!

From Me ('65) of NC - 06/03/13 - "Famous Sailors":

I've added the late    Vice Admiral Harry L. Harty, Jr., (25 July 1917 - 15 Aug 1986) to our Famous Sailors page.  He really doesn't belong there in the strictest sense, as he is most definitely a Noteworthy Sailor instead, but in this case his claim to "fame" is that he is Paul's third cousin.

   Now there's a secret I'll bet you didn't know!

As I've mentioned before, these Famous Military Pages are not necessarily what you might expect.....

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 06/01/13 - "FINAL REUNION":

Final Reunion....

It's the cup of brandy that no one wants to drink.

       Thank you, Dools!

From My Friend, Susan, of NC - 06/02/13 - "Heat":

Susan Dear, I think you have just accurately and succinctly explained one of Life's Deepest Mysteries to me! Thank you so very much!

From Me ('65) of NC - 06/01/13 - "RE: Slow Cooker Hot Fudge Sundae Cake":

Without ever having made it, I posted this recipe myself recently:

I was excited to try it, as I do love my crock pot, so I made it for guests on Memorial Day (I know - bad idea, right?!?).  I followed the recipe exactly.  Perhaps I cooked it too long, but the cake never rose to the top as it was supposed to have done.  Moreover, while the hot fudge was good, the cake itself tasted like used rubber tires - and rarely have I met a cake I didn't like.

It did nicely provide the evening's entertainment, though.....

Do You Want to Know a Secret

Words and Music primarily by John Lennon (09 Oct 1940 – 08 Dec 1980); Credited to McCartney–Lennon

Recorded by The Beatles, 1963

You never know how much I really love you
You'll never know how much I really care

Listen, do you want to know a secret
Do you promise not to tell, woh, woh, woh
Closer, let me whisper in your ear

Say the words you long to hear
I'm in love with you, oo

Listen, do you want to know a secret
Do you promise not to tell, woh, woh, woh
Closer, let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear
I'm in love with you, oo

I've known a secret for a week or two
Nobody knows just we two

Listen, do you want to know a secret
Do you promise not to tell, woh, woh, woh
Closer, let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear

I'm in love with you, oo, oo
