Ed resided in Williamsburg, Va. He graduated from Newport News High School and apprenticed at the Newport News Shipbuilding and DryDock Company, where he was captain of the apprentice school golf team. He served in the Navy, as a machinist mate third class, during World War II on the U.S.S. Canberra CA-70. He was given an honorable discharge on Nov. 6, 1945. After retiring, Ed continued to be the avid golfer, meeting new people on the golf course and educating them on how to play the game. He loved sharing his golfing knowledge whether it was how to hold the golf club correctly or how to construct the perfect golf club. Being on the water was his favorite past time. He loved to fish and spent many hours on the York River with his family. Whether it was finding oysters or walking in the shallows of the river looking for soft crabs, the family was always there learning from him and his expertise. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Bucktrout Funeral home, 4124 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, VA 22188. Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me
Words by Edward Hopper
Music by John E. Gould, 1871
Jesus Savior, pilot me over life's tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll, hiding rock and treacherous shoal;
Chart and compass came from Thee; Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild;
Boisterous waves obey Thy will, when Thou say'st to them "Be still!"
Wondrous Sov'reign of the sea, Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
When at last I near the shore and the fearful breakers roar,
'Twixt me and the peaceful rest; then, while leaning on Thy breast,
May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot thee."
