Nelson Riddle's 87th Birthday

“In essence, String Theory describes space and time, matter and energy,
gravity and light, indeed all of God's creation... as music.”

- Roy H. Williams

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

If you watched television at all back in the day, you could hardly have missed the words, "Nelson Riddle and His Orchestra"

This song is one of his most successful musical arrangements, made newly popular by - oh, yes, that would have been Frank Sinatra again.

ALERT:

From Cheryl Mays Howard ('66/'67) of VA - 05/31/08 - "death":

There was a death notice for Beverly Rosser NNHS, not sure what class he and his twin brother Waverly were in, yours or one earlier.

I went to Orcutt Baptist with them both... there should be an obit tomorrow.. I will be out of town...you know where.. Grandma land.

Peace & Blessing,
Cheryl

Oh, Cheryl, I'm so sorry to hear this! We'll watch for his obituary and create his Memorial Newsletter when it appears.

Beverly and Waverly began with the Class of 1963.  By 1963 when Waverly graduated, Beverly was listed with the Class of 1966. I believe he then joined the Marine Corps as did his brother, but as you know, my memory is frayed.

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 05/30/08 - "The Shoe Box":

Maybe you missed this one on one of it's trips around the email circuit? Maybe not!? And most probably, you don't care!!

Oh, no, Wayne Honey - I DO care! This is one of my faves - thanks!

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover.

In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside.

She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dish cloths and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she said, 'my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a dish cloth.'

The little old man was so moved; he had to fight back tears. Only two precious dish cloths were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost burst with happiness.

'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the dish cloths, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?'

'Oh,' she said, 'That's the money I made from selling the dish cloths.'

A Prayer.......

Dear Lord, I pray for Wisdom to understand my man; Love to forgive him; And Patience for his moods; Because Lord, if I pray for Strength, I'll beat him to death, because I don't know how to crochet.

   Thanks, Wayne Honey!

From Richard Dawes (NNHS / HHS - '62) of VA - 05/30/08 - "BBQ Rules":

BBQ RULES

We are about to enter the summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity, as it's the only type of cooking a 'real' man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

_**_Routine... _**
(1) *The woman buys the food. *
(2) *The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. *
(3) *The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. *_

Here comes the important part:
(4) *THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. *

More routine....
(5) *The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. *
(6) *The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.*

Important again:
(7) *THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. *

More routine....
(8) *The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table. *
(9) *After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.*

And most important of all:
(10) *Everyone *PRAISES *the *MAN *and *THANKS HIM *for his cooking efforts. *
(11) *The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women....

   Thanks, Dicky!

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of Northern VA - 05/30/08 - "Pastor's Business Card":

Pastor's Business Card

A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners.  At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door.

Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote "Revelation 3:20" on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned.  Added to it was this cryptic message, "Genesis 3:10."

Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he had to chuckle:

Revelation 3:20 begins "Behold, I stand at the door and knock."
Genesis 3:10 reads, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked."

Remember when the funniest jokes were the clean ones?
                       They still are!

"A cheerful heart is good medicine" (Prov. 17:22)

   Thanks, Bill!

From Jerry ('65) and    Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 05/31/08 - "The Gratitude Sign":

The Gratitude Sign

Ever wonder how to say thank you when you see a military person in uniform?

See a simple way to do it from across a room or as you are passing by.

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 05/31/08 - "Riverside Hospital":

CBD,

When I saw the photos that        Dave (Spriggs - '64 - of VA) sent in showing the demolishing of the old Riverside Hospital, my heart sank! As Dave stated many people have a connection to that building. With its demise went a part of me.

Why is it that other cities across the country can find new uses for old buildings such as this one, yet Newport News' answer to old buildings is to demolish them?

The building standing in the first shot on the left, as has been discussed previously, second floor on the side shown with the exception of the first window on the right, was where I lived on 50th Street. The third window from the right was "my room"; I wonder how much time is left for that building?

For us North Enders that lived on 50th and the lower numbered blocks, we no longer have anything, or very little, to point out as something with pleasant memories attached. No one seeing it now would ever believe that at one time it was a "little busy city" within the city. Now, parking lots or vacant ones.

It is sad.

TC!

I've Got the World on a String

Music by Harold Arlen
(15 Feb 1905 - 23 Apr 1986)

Lyrics by Ted Koehler, 1933
(14 July 1894 - 17 Jan 1973)

Arranged by Nelson Riddle, 1952
(1 June 1921 - 6 Aug 1985)

for Frank Sinatra
(12 Dec 1915 - 14 May 1998)

I've got the world on a string
Sitting on a rainbow
Got that string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love

I've got a song that I sing
I can make the rain go
Anytime I snap my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love

Life's a beautiful thing
Long as I hold that string
I'd be a silly so-and-so
If I'd ever let you go

But I've got this world on a string
I'm sittin' on a rainbow
Got that string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love
