05/29/14 - NNHS Newsletter - Ascension Day

“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud
received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up,
behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee,
why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven,
shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven
.

- Acts 1: 9-11 (King James Version)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today is a Christian holiday (though not necessarily observed by all Christians), celebrated on the 40th day after Easter Sunday.  It marks the day when Jesus Christ ascended up into Heaven, 40 days after His resurrection from the dead.  I think that this is only our second observance of it here together as the big Typhoon family that we are.

Hi Carol! Hope all is well. Please add Dad and Lita to your NNHS updates. Their email address is:

______@_______.___

Thanks, Renee! This is a newer email addy than I had for them, and I'll add it to my mailing list - for all the good it will do me...

The latest news is available on the 2014 NNHS Newsletters link, but beginning April 1, some silly anti-spam measures suddenly and without warning left me unable to initiate any emails through gmail.

     "Message rejected due to DMARC."

I'm about to try something else.

From Rick Chandler ('65) of TX - 05/28/14 - "Missing Newsletters":

I have not received a newsletter since early April and would like to be re-added to the mailing list.

Thanks,
Rick Chandler

Hi, Rick! You are certainly still on my mailing list, but after the original fiasco in early April when I was blasted by several hundred separate and individual notices telling me that my notes did not and would not go ANYWHERE as I have been declared by unknown authorities the Evil Incarnate, I have had not the heart nor the will to try sending them again through gmail. I have a new plan, though - stay tuned!

From My #6 Son, Dale Harty, (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - '02) of CA - 05/23/14 - "Claire":

It turns out that my 3-year-old girl knows the words to the Red Dwarf theme song. ... not sure if that's awesome or very, very sad. I think I'm gonna go with awesome.

Oh, I would! I truly would! Thank you, Dale! Kiss your funny, precocious chickadees for me!

Why I Like Retirement !

I made the type all bigger so you Ol’ Folks could read it too…..
!

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked,
'How old was your husband?' '98,' she replied.... 'Two years older than I am.'
'So you're 96,' the undertaker commented..
She responded, 'Hardly worth going home, is it?'

Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman:
'And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?' the reporter asked...
She simply replied, 'No peer pressure.'

The nice thing about being senile is you can hide your own Easter eggs, then go find them.

I've sure gotten old!
I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes.
I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that
make me dizzy, winded, and subject toblackouts.
Have bouts with dementia.
Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore.
Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.
Have lost all my friends. But, thank God,
I still have my driver's license.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission
to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.
I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.
But, by the time I got my sweats on, the class was over.

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffee maker.

These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, 'For fast relief.'

 And, always remember ..

You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing!

       Thanks, Dearest Judy!

From Stacy Dorn Davis ('64) of CA - 05/28/14, 9:19 PM - "Ramblings of a Retired Mind":

Ramblings of a Retired Mind

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.

I also made a cover for my hearing aid and now I have what they call blue teeth, I think.

You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.

I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

I thought about making a fitness movie for folks my age, and call it 'Pumping Rust'.

I've gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!

When people see a cat's litter box, they always say, 'Oh, have you got a cat?' Just once I want to say, 'No, it's for company!'

Employment application blanks always ask who is to be notified in case of an emergency. I think you should write, 'A Good Doctor'!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me. They were cramming for their finals.

As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.

A penny saved is a government oversight.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.

The easiest way to find something lost around the house is to buy a replacement.

He who hesitates is probably right.

Did you ever notice: The Roman Numerals for forty (40) are XL.

If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame.

The sole purpose of a child's middle name is so he can tell when he's really in trouble..

Did you ever notice: When you put the 2 words 'The' and 'IRS' together it spells 'Theirs...'

Aging: Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

When you are dissatisfied and would like to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.

One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young. Ah, being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.

Lord, Keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth ..

... AMEN

     Thank you, Stacy!

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 05/28/14:

The boss was concerned that his employees weren’t giving him enough respect, so he tried and old fashioned method of persuasion: He brought in a sign that said “I’m the Boss” and taped it to his door.

After lunch, he noticed someone had taped another note under his. “Your wife called. She wants her sign back!”

O Christ, Thou Hast Ascended

Music - Greenland

Words by Edward H. Bickersteth, Jr., 1872
(25 Jan 1825 -16 May 1906)

O Christ, thou hast ascended
triumphantly on high,
by cherub guards attended
and armies of the sky:
let earth tell forth the story:
our very flesh and bone,
Emmanuel, in glory,
ascends his Father's throne.

Heaven's gates unfold above thee,
but canst thou, Lord, forget
the little band who love thee
and gaze from Olivet?
Nay, on thy breast engraven
thou bearest every name,
our Priest in earth and heaven
eternally the same.

There, there thou standest pleading
the virtue of thy blood,
for sinners interceding,
our Advocate with God;
and every changeful fashion
of our brief joys and cares
finds thought in thy compassion
and echo in thy prayers.

O for the priceless merit
of thy redeeming cross!
Vouchsafe thy sevenfold Spirit
and turn to gain our loss;
till we by strong endeavor
in heart and mind ascend,
and dwell with thee for ever
in glories without end.
