05/27/16 - NNHS Newsletter - Hello Darlin'

“A broken heart is what makes life so wonderful five years later,
when you see that special guy in an elevator and he is fat
and smoking and saying 'Long time no see'.”

- Phyllis Batelle
(b. 1922)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

"It's been a long time" since I was completely caught up on back Newsletters, too.....

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_Darlin%27_%28song%29:

"Hello Darlin'" is an American country music song written and recorded by Conway Twitty.

Originally released in 1970, the song became Twitty's fourth No. 1 song on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart that summer, and soon became one of his signature songs...

While recording the song in 1969, Twitty sang the opening lines, but for some reason it didn't work. Record producer Owen Bradley suggested speaking the lines: "Hello darlin', nice to see you." The result was a hook that made the song instantly recognizable to fans.[1]

"Hello Darlin'" is about a man who runs into an old flame and, after acknowledging she's "just as lovely as you used to be," tries to put up his bravado by saying he's getting along fine, "except I can't sleep, and I cry all night 'til dawn." He then admits his deep sorrow for his mistakes that led to the breakup of their relationship, then - after sharing an embrace "just for old time's sake" - bids her well. Before the two part, he says that if she would forgive him, he'll be waiting for her.

The song spent four weeks atop the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, and was named the No. 1 song of 1970. Aside from being Twitty's standard concert opener, the song became a country standard.

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 05/26/15:

A man appeared before St. Peter at the pearly gates. "Have you ever done anything of particular merit?" St. Peter asked.

"Well, I can think of one thing," the man offered. "On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of high-testosterone bikers, who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him on the head, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground." I yelled, "Now, back off!! Or you'll answer to me!"

St. Peter was impressed: "When did this happen?"

"Just a couple of minutes ago."

Hello Darlin'

Written and recorded by Conway Twitty (01 Sept 1933 - 05 June 1993), 1970

Hello, darlin', nice to see ya
It's been a long time
You're just as lovely as you used to be

How's your new love? Are you happy?
Hope you're doin' fine
Just to know means so much to me

What's that, darlin? "How'm I doin'?"
Guess I'm doin' all right
Except I can't sleep and I cry all night till dawn
What I'm trying to say is "I love you and I miss you"
"And I'm so sorry that I did you wrong"

Look up, darlin', let me kiss ya
Just for old time's sake
Let me hold you in my arms one more time

Thank ya, darlin', may God bless you
And may each step you take
Bring you closer to the thing you seek to find

Goodbye, darlin', gotta go now
Gotta try to find a way
To lose these mem'ries of a love so warm and true
And if you should ever find it in your heart to forgive me
Come back, darlin', I'll be waiting for you
