05/16/13 - NNHS Newsletter - That Old Feeling

It didn't dawn on me until you were gone just how much I would
miss you. Sometimes I start to pick up the phone to see if you
want to do something, and then I remember you're far away.
Or I go somewhere we used to go, see people having fun, and
wish we could be there, too, laughing and talking like they are.

- Renee Duvall

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

You know how it is once I get into one of my Frank Sinatra moods.....

BONUS - - That Old Feeling - Frank Sinatra, August 11, 1947

"That Old Feeling" is a popular song.

The music was written by Sammy Fain, the lyrics by Lew Brown[1]. The song was published in 1937.

The song first appeared in the movie Vogues of 1938, actually released in 1937[1]. It was immediately a hit in a version recorded by Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm Orchestra, considered to have spent fourteen weeks on the charts in 1937, four at #1. (The charts did not actually exist in those days, but reconstructions of what they would have been give those statistics[1].) A version was also recorded by Jan Garber, which charted at #10[1].)

In 1952, it was included in the Susan Hayward movie, With a Song in My Heart where Jane Froman sang it in a dubbing for Hayward. Patti Page, as well as Frankie Laine and Buck Clayton, had hit versions of the song in 1955. Frank Sinatra had a hit with the song in 1960.

The title of the song was given to a film in 1997, starring Bette Midler and Dennis Farina, where it was performed by Patrick Williams and by Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson[1][2].

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 05/16/13, 10:04 AM - "    The President of the Class of 1965, Joe Wingo of NC":

I hope this note finds you and Paul well or at least headed that way :-)

Last Wednesday 5-8-2013 Joe had hip replacement surgery to replace his right hip due to arthritis. Perhaps you could make note of that and ask for prayers for his quick and complete recovery.

He is doing fine, and I let it slip past me--telling all in advance!! Senior moment??
See what you can do!! Thanks!!

YOWZERS! Thank you so much for letting us know about Joe's surgery, Wayne Honey! We will most definitely keep him in our prayers!

Tell this baby that the 15th is an excellent day to be born.    Diana (Lyons Harty - Portsmouth HS, NH / Eastlake HS, CA - '05) of MA) has been in labor for 2 days. This is approaching the official designation of "just plain silly."

YEAH!  Babies are like that! Hang in there! Thanks for the update, Dale!
   Love and kisses to all!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 05/16/13, 11:20 AM - "Stuart Gardens":

Hi, Carol:

Could we have been neighbors in Stuart Gardens???
Sure enough. Your mother drove a Renault back then.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

WHAT?!? Are you kidding me?!? Nine years ago as we were working on building the Pool page (which remains one of my favorites!) we realized that you were my swimming coach back in 1957.

Now after all these years you tell me that we were neighbors?!? How can this be?!?  I must be delirious from this dumb germ. Surely I would have noticed such a thing... or at least figured it out by now..... But if I'm NOT imagining this whole thing, you need to tell me exactly where you lived.....

    Thank you, Adonis!

From Malcolm Davis ('65) of VA - 05/15/13 - "Pretty bird":

This peacock is on the property of the Yoder's (Yoder's Dairy) daughter. It is on Warwick Blvd. near Oyster Point Rd. It was a traffic stopper! This happened to surprise us last Monday.

WOWZERS! What a glorious peacock! Thank you so much for sharing this, Malcolm!

As you may or my not know, peacocks (and pomegranates) have been following me around for the past 15 months.  Every where I go they somehow appear in one form or another - and as it was all their idea, I've decided to collect them (well, sorta...).

   We'll revisit this thought soon.....

From Me ('65) of NC - 05/15/13 - "Meat Loaf and Potato Casserole with Bacon":
Meat Loaf and Potato Casserole with Bacon

1 pound lean ground beef
3/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/3 cup seasoned dry breadcrumbs
1/4 cup Jack Daniels® Honey Smokehouse Barbecue Sauce
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tsps. chili powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1 Package Ore-Ida® Steam n’ Mash Cut Russet Potatoes
2/3 cup canned evaporated milk
1 Tbsp. butter
1 Tbsp. chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 cup cooked bacon, crumbled
1/4 cup canned crispy fried onions
2/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese blend

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Coat 9" x 9" baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine beef, onion, breadcrumbs, Barbecue Sauce, egg, chili powder and salt until well mixed. Gently press into bottom of baking dish.

Bake uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cooked through. Remove from oven and carefully pour off any excess fat if needed. Adjust oven temperature to broil and place oven rack 6 to 8 inches from heat source.

Meanwhile, microwave Potatoes according to package instructions. In a large bowl, mix together hot Potatoes, milk, butter, parsley and garlic, and mash with a potato masher until smooth. For a smoother consistency, mix with an electric mixer to desired consistency. Stir in bacon and fried onions. Spread evenly on top of beef mixture and sprinkle with cheese.

Broil for 3 to 5 minutes, or until cheese is lightly browned. Serve hot with additional Barbecue Sauce if desired.

From My Friend, Susan, of NC - 05/14/13 - "Homemade Seasonings":
Make your own Ranch, Dry Onion Soup Mix and Taco Seasoning and store in small mason jars....This is soooo much HEALTHIER than those you buy at the store!! They contain a TON of stuff that is not good for you!!

Taco Seasoning:

1/2 cup chili powder
1/4 cup onion powder
1/8 cup ground cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon sea salt

Put ingredients into a jar and shake.

Dry Onion Soup Mix:

2/3 cup dried, minced onion
3 teaspoons parsley flakes
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons turmeric
1 teaspoon celery salt
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper

Mix all ingredients in a jar, then give the jar a good shake. I’d recommend shaking the jar to mix the ingredients well before each use.

Use 4 tablespoons in a recipe in place of 1 packet of onion soup mix. Store this in a dry, cool place.

Ranch Dressing or Dip:

5 tablespoons dried minced onions
7 teaspoons parsley flakes
4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix together and store in an air tight container.

For dressing: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 1 cup mayonnaise and 1 cup buttermilk or sour cream.

For dip: Mix 2 tablespoons dry mix with 2 cups sour cream.

Mix up a few hours before serving, so the flavors all blend.

   Thanks, Susan!

That Old Feeling

Words by Lew Brown (10 Dec 1893 - 05 Feb 1958)

Music by Sammy Fain (17 June 1902 - 06 Dec 1989), 1937

Recorded by Frank Sinatra, 1947

I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight, I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by, I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye, my heart stood still

Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
Then I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
'cause that old feeling is still in my heart

There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
'cause that old feeling is still in my heart
