From Eric Huffstutler (Bethel HS - '75)
of VA - 05/15/10 - "Oil Spills":
Carol, I am not sure if this topic has been brought up in light of the current Gulf Coast oil disaster which stirred up other memories. But on one of the state library's forums someone posted the fact that during WWII, Virginia had its own of sorts due to the many United States ship sinking by enemy forces (German U-Boats and other) off the East Coast including oil and fuel tankers. Apparently it affected the Virginia Beach area and much of the wildlife then but does anyone remember their parents talking about this or knows any history about it? Photos? Eric S. YOWZERS!
I did not know that,
Eric, but strangely the question crossed my mind for the first time just
the other day! Thanks
for the nudge!

piano and TV and stuff - but the ending was WAAAY cool!
Thanks, Lady!
From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 05/14/10 - "A memory worth
preserving...":
This will cheer you up!! The dancers are Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell. Eleanor Powell is fully clothed with a dress below her knees. Sadly a bygone era of civility and grace. The picture is not so good, but the dancing and music are marvelous!! The year: 1940 (70 years ago); the movie: Broadway Melody of 1940; the music: Begin The Beguine. The narrator is Frank Sinatra. "He said we will not see the likes of this again." Certainly not on Dancing with the Stars. It was filmed in ONE unedited camera shot! Amazing! It is considered by many critics as one of the best dance sequences ever filmed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toDl2hXt8BM - Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire Best Tap dancers ever!
WOWZERS!
Thanks,
Renee!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 05/15/10
- "FOOD INSURANCE":
I am not necessarily expecting hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, economic collapse, civil unrest … or a host of other natural and man-made disasters which strip away the thin veneer of restraint among the populace. I’m just sayin’ ….

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 05/15/10 - "What
will He say about us?":
IS ANYBODY HAPPIER BECAUSE YOU PASSED
HIS WAY?
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THAT YOU SPOKE
TO HIM TODAY?
THE DAY IS ALMOST OVER, AND ITS
TOILING TIME IS THROUGH;
IS THERE ANYONE TO UTTER NOW A
KINDLY WORD OF YOU ?
CAN YOU SAY TONIGHT, IN PARTING WITH
THE DAY THAT'S SLIPPING FAST,
THAT YOU HELPED A SINGLE BROTHER OF
THE MANY THAT YOU PASSED?
IS A SINGLE HEART REJOICING OVER
WHAT YOU DID OR SAID:
DOES THE MAN WHOSE HOPES WERE
FADING, NOW WITH COURAGE LOOK AHEAD?
DID YOU WASTE THE DAY, OR LOSE IT?
WAS IT WELL OR SORELY SPENT?
DID YOU LEAVE A TRAIL OF KINDNESS,
OR A SCAR OF DISCONTENT?
AS YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES IN SLUMBER,
DO YOU THINK THAT GOD WILL SAY,
"YOU HAVE EARNED ONE MORE TOMORROW
BY THE WORK YOU DID TODAY"?

JOHN HALL
OOOH

FINALLY: |
From
ArcaMax Jokes - 05/14/10:Lost Steve took his new wife camping for the first time. At every opportunity, he passed along outdoor survival lore. One day they got lost hiking in the deep woods. Steve tried the usual tactics to determine direction; moss on the trees (there was no moss), the direction of the sun (it was an overcast day). Just as his wife was beginning to panic, Steve spotted a small cabin off in the distance. He pulled out his binoculars, studied the cabin, then turned and led his wife right back to their camp. "That was terrific," she said, impressed. "How did you do it?" "Simple," he replied. "In this part of the country, all TV satellite dishes point south." |

I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight, I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by, I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye, my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
Then I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
'cause that old feeling is still in my heart
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
'cause that old feeling is still in my heart
