Irby":
Dear Carol,
My husband's aunt, Elvira Ashburn Irby, passed away May 15, 2010. She
graduated from NNHS in June 1937. It was from her senior class group picture
that I was able to retrieve some of her classmate's pictures for your
newsletter. She was a dear sweet lady with whom we enjoyed many wonderful times.
Here is the link to view her obituary in the Daily Press:

I have attached two pictures of Elvira, one is her high school picture, and the
other just a couple years ago.
Thank you for honoring all the Newport News High School graduates!
June Collie
Oh, June, I'm so sorry to hear this! Thank you for bringing
it to my attention. As you know, I often gloss over things I do not wish
to comprehend and believe. You and your family have my sincerest
condolences.

Dear Family of Elvira,
Temple Baptist Church would like to extend our deepest sympathy. Elvira was a loved and dear member of Temple for 58 years. She will be deeply missed. ~ Temple Baptist, Newport News, Virginia May 20, 2010
I would like to extend my
sympathy to Ms. Irby's family. I had the pleasure of bringing Savannah, my
golden retriever, to visit each week while she lived at Warwick Forest. I
was happy to have seen Ms. Irby during her last week at the Gardens, if only
for a couple of minutes. She didn't recognize Savannah, specifically, but
she did see a dog and said "I like dogs" before falling back to sleep while
holding Savannah's ear.

I send you my sincere
sympathy in the loss of dear Mrs. Irby. She was very precious to me when
I had the opportunity to drive her to and from her treatments. She
fought her health problems very valiantly and was a fun and wonderful
lady.
God bless you during these sad days. Sincerely,
~ Faye Keenan,
Yorktown, Virginia
May 25, 2010 I worked with Elvira at Basic Construction Company from 1979-1981. I would always go and try to get typing to do to stay busy. She was a really nice person to work with. ~ Karen Seamster, Eure, North Carolina May 26, 2010 Elvira was a wonderful person and I know that she will be missed by her family. I got to know her through her sister Virginia and together they were quite a pair. My deepest and sincerely sympathy to the family. Lead Me Gently Home
Words and Music
by Will L. Thompson, 1879
(7 Nov 1847 - 20 Sept 1909)
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
When life’s toils are ended,
And parting days have come,
Sin no more shall tempt me,
Ne’er from Thee I’ll roam,
If Thou’ll only lead me, Father,
Lead me gently home.
* Refrain:
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
Lead me gently home, Father,
Lead me gently home;
In life’s darkest hours, Father,
When life’s troubles come,
Keep my feet from wand’ring,
Lest from Thee I roam,
Lest I fall upon the wayside,
Lead me gently home.
