05/05/13 - NNHS Newsletter - The Way Old Friends Do

“Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days.
An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it
meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.”

- Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th and current  Dalai Lama
(b. 06 July 1935)

This is a comforting song, wouldn't you agree? And who among us could not use a little comfort right now?

From Phil Hammond ('64) of FL - 05/04/13 - "Cake":

Carol dear,

I just wanted to tell you how divine the Elvis Presley Cake was.  I often wonder who comes up with these recopies but this one is unbelievable!    Sylvia (Hall Hammond - '66) is a little upset since she is on a diet and can not have any.

Thanks again for another fine recipe,

Phil

Thank you so much, Phil - I'm glad you liked it! Tell Sylvia I feel her pain!
You've just solved a minor dilemma for me. I'm having company for dinner Thursday night. Now I don't have to worry about what I'll make for dessert!

From My Friend, Jessica, of NC - 05/01/13 - "Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake":

  Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake

Makes one 8 or 9 inch cookie cake

3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour
2 tsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips OR about 1 cup of chocolate chunks

1. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
2. Mix in egg and vanilla extract.
3. With the mixer on low speed, add flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt.
4. Stir in chocolate chips. Dough will be thick.
5. Chill for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
6. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees.
7. Place parchment paper into the bottom of your cake pan to help the cookie not stick.
8. Spread the dough out into the cake pan. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until the edges are slightly golden.
9. Remove from oven and let cool for a couple minutes on the cookie sheet, then transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.

FINALLY:

From www.ajokeaday.com - 05/04/13:

In 1997 at the age of 87 and not acquainted with modern technology, Ruth was given a "cordless" phone by her son. He lived 1500 miles away. After setting it up and showing her how to use it he went home and called her.

"How is your new phone working, Mom?"

Her reply astonished him. "Oh we took it back. It wouldn't work. It did not even have a cord."

The Way Old Friends Do

Written and Composed by Benny Andersson (b. 16 Dec 1946) and Björn Ulvaeus (25 Apr 1945)

Recorded by ABBA, 1980

You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do

You and I can share the silence
Finding comfort together
The way old friends do
And after fights and words of violence
We make up with each other
The way old friends do
Times of joy and times of sorrow
We will always see it through
Oh, I don't care what comes tomorrow
We can face it together
The way old friends do

We can face it together
The way old friends do
