05/04/16 - NNHS Newsletter - Yom HaShoah
(Holocaust Remembrance Day)

“Let it be an act of remembrance, for that is what the victims wanted:
to be remembered, at least to be remembered.

- Elie Wiesel
(b. 30 Sept 1928)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This is not a celebration, but a time to keep fresh in our hearts so we will never forget.

BONUS #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC9oDrwFAO0 - Remembrances - Itzhak Perlman

BONUS #2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqQRRYMrYe4 - "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" Preview - Studio East - "...I Never Saw Another Butterfly is a story based on the lives and art of Jewish children held in Terezin during WWII and the Holocaust. Please be aware of the emotional nature of this show and the subject matter it faces.

Over 15,000 Jewish children passed through the Terezin concentration camp during WWII, and only about a hundred were alive when Terezin was liberated. Raja lived through it all, teaching the children when there was nothing to teach with, helping to give them hope when there was little reason for hope. This play is her story. It is history as much as any play can be history, showing the best and the worst of which the human heart is capable of. Recommended for ages 9 and up...."

Take time today to remember those millions of worlds which ended.....

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - Class of 1959) - 04/29/08 (sic) - "WORLD WAR 2 PICTURES..........":

Not just Jews but Christians, ....too sad.

WORLD WAR 2 PICTURES

These photos were taken in Germany by James Emison Chanslor, an Army Master Sergeant who served in World War II from 1942 until 1945.
Source: Photos courtesy of John Michael Chanslor

It is a matter of history that when Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps, he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

He did this because he said in words to this effect: 'Get it all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere down the track of history some b *stard will get up and say that this never happened.'

'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.'
- Edmund Burke

This week, the UK removed The Holocaust from its school curriculum because it 'offended' the Muslim population
which claims it never occurred.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The above sentence is not really correct, but it does nothing to negate the reality
of the horror of these images, or the fact that there are those who make such obscene claims:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/holocaust.asp

This is a frightening portent of the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving in to it.

It is now more than 60 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

This ..... is ..... in memory of the six million Jews, 20 million Russians, 10 million Christians and 1,900 Catholic priests who were murdered, massacred, raped, burned, starved and humiliated with the German and Russian peoples looking the other way!

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,'
it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

.....remember, because we cannot let it ever happen again.

Thanks To ALL Who Served And Are Serving..
Please Pray For Our Troops And Leaders.

God Bless America. Land That I love.

   Thank you so much, Norris!

     From Me ('65) of NC - 05/04/16:

On a personal note,  ..... As the Regimental Surgeon for the 116th Infantry of the 29th Division,         my daddy, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) was present at the liberation of at least one of the infamous Nazi concentration camps the one at Dinslaken. He would never actually admit it to me, but he was in the right place at the right time, and it would stand to reason that he should have been there. Moreover, on more than one occasion he related in great detail a delousing scene of woman prisoners (he called them "refugees") which I later viewed in a documentary exactly as he had described. Most telling to me, however, was the way he never missed an opportunity to show me, a young child, very graphic images of the camps as they appeared in magazines and on television. Considering the great care he had taken to protect me from other evils of the world, his heroic efforts that I should never forget speak volumes to me, even today.

   Thank you, Daddy.

REUNION NEWS:

From Renee Koskinas Hanrahan ('56) of VA - 05/03/16, 2:08 PM:

Hello, Carol,

The NNHS Class of 1956, the Girls (and Boys) of the Rock n' Roll, are having their 60-Year Reunion on October 19 and 20. If you could mention it, the publicity would be much appreciated.

Renee (Koskinas) Hanrahan, Publicity Committee

Certainly, Renee! I've posted this on the Main Page and the Reunion Page. Feel free to send me the venue and contact information (or any other fun and pertinent details), and I'll post them, too! Y'all have fun!

From Sledd Thomas, possibly of NC - 05/03/16 - "NNHS and
the President of the Class of 1968, Tony Koskinas of NC":

Dear Carol,

I was a Mouse, I think in 1968. I played in the NNHS Marching High School Marching Band. I still cannot believe there is no NNHS, someplace, in Newport News.

I am also the second son of     Mrs. Esther Virginia Cutler Thomas (June '32). You may remember Mrs. Thomas taught English and Speech in Room 203 at NNHS.

I say all this by way of hoping to reach out to Tony Koskinas, for no other reason, other than just to say hello. I’m also the cousin of
Betsy Smith ('65) and brother to Kit Thomas. ('64) I hope you hold none of that against me.

If you can help me with reaching out to Tony, I would greatly appreciate it. THANK YOU!

Wishing you the very best,

Sledd

GIGGLES! Thank you, Sledd! I remember your family quite well! I was sitting in your amazing mama's Speech class on November 22, 1963 when      Mark Hutcherson ('66 - of VA) broke the news to us of President Kennedy's assassination.

You didn't mention Betsy's sisters, Clare ('62) and Jeannie ('67), but I knew them, too!

I forwarded your note to Tony, and hope you will be hearing from him soon!

From Brian Beachum ('72) of VA - 04/26/16 - "Disc-O-Ten":

Carol Harty,

Here's a link a friend turned me on to. It's a recording made of the WAVY TV-10 TV show called "Disc-O-Ten" that features dancers from Newport News High Schools from 1967. It's a blast. A real rarity.

Here is the link to the Disc-O-Ten program on YouTube.

https://youtu.be/GvoO93N959M

Let me know if you recognize anyone.

Also, a reminder that I'm having a display of my photography work at the Hampton Roads Transit Gallery, 509 E. 18th Street, Norfolk, VA. The gallery is open Mon - Fri 8am - 5pm. The show runs through August 26th. Here's another copy of the show announcement.
The show is entitled "The Magic of County Mayo, Ireland." You can guess the subject matter...

(Even though we had to attend a different school that last year, a few of use dedicated Typhoons still choose to have NNHS on our rings and diplomas!)

WOWZERONI! Thank you, Brian! I would have been more likely to have recognized dancers a couple of years older than a couple of years younger than I, but I did see a few familiar looking faces. For sure and certain I spotted Kenny Schwartz ('67) and Roslyn Smith ('67)!

FINALLY:
From www.ajokeaday.com - 05/03/15:

A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the Branch and wrote "This iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag."

While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window.

So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to the Wells Fargo Bank. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller.

She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America.

Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, "OK" and left. He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America.
