Midnight in Moscow

“Wait for me by moonlight,
watch for me by moonlight,
I'll come to thee by moonlight,
though hell should bar the way.”

-  Alfred Noyes
(16 Sept 1880 - 28 June 1958)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This will be our last day in this particular series of recalling 1962.

In honor of that,  I had mentioned to our Wizard of Wonderment,     Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA. that I would really have liked a copy of Midnight in Moscow, and once again, PRESTO, he found it!

Thank you so much, David! It's just super!

BIRTHDAYS - PRESENT AND UPCOMING:

Happy Birthday today to   Billy Turner ('65) of TX!

Tomorrow, another one of my classmates,   Pauline Collins Shofner ('65) of VA, will also be celebrating that same Major Birthday!

And Happy Birthday wishes on Saturday to    Susie Overton Jones' ('63) husband, Tom Jones (WHS - '60) of AL!

Many Happy Returns, One and All!

  From Me ('65) of NC - 04/09/07 (continued - Part 5):

Every now and then I receive something in the mail which just blows me away.  This Monday afternoon such a package was delivered to my door. It was a large scrapbook entitled, "Monotony of Winning", containing primarily Typhoon sports clippings from 1962 to 1965.  I'm still speechless.

    From Marcus C. Higgins ('65) of AZ - 04/09/07:

The1962 football news clippings preserved by Marcus are now all placed here - along with this one which I had somehow previously neglected to scan:

          http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/FOOT-B-63.html

"... The Typhoon Marching Band beats the cadence..."

This one, of course, required double placement:

     http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/band.html

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/band-63.html - For some reason I had originally colored this page in shades of grey (?!?)  I painted it in colors now - Typhoon colors, at that.

For that matter, so this clipping also required double placement, so now it has it as well:

Rival Head Cheerleaders Judy Horton ('63) and Jean Clodfelter (HHS - '63)

   Thanks again, Marcus!

AS PROMISED:

I was visiting the Class of 1962 web page recently, and saw that its webmistress,     Brenda Amos Williams ('62) of VA, had posted a list of their Missing Classmates:

 http://geocities.com/typhoonmom1/

And because I've made one of these for several other classes for inclusion on our site, and because I harbor tender feelings for the Class of 1962, I made one for them as well:

I hope that by posting this, we will be able to solicit your help in finding more and more of these people.  And please, if you see yourself or someone you know on there, please contact Brenda and let her know your whereabouts!

And thanks to the Class of 1962 for all their help and inspiration to me over the years.  Without them, this site would not exist!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 05/01/07:

This will keep your attention for a few moments and put things into perspective.. You have got to listen to this song!

In March, 2005, this song was performed at a Diamond Rio concert. They received an immediate standing ovation, and continue to do so every time they perform it!

Sadly, major radio stations wouldn't play it because it was considered politically incorrect.  Consequently, the song was never released to the public!  If this song speaks to your heart, share it with friends and loved ones.

Then let us cease being the silent majority and join together as Americans!

Thanks, Renee!   We've posted this before, but it's such a goody!

  From Tom Norris (Hampton HS - '73) of VA - 05/01/07 - "re: Nantucket @ Kohl's":

Hi Carol ... didja melt down because (1) the thought of me made you swoon, (2) you went out in the rain, and you're so sweet you melted, or (3) just one of those days???

WILD GIGGLES!!!  Actually, Tommee, it's been one of those years!  Sometimes as the months drag on and on (and we just hit Month #10 and I see no pleasant ending in sight), the financial strain just gets to me more than at other times, and my peace of mind has all but disintegrated, my ability to concentrate leaves me, and I start to unravel.....

The Nantucket collection is waaay cool ... fortunately there is a new Kohl's in Newport News (Jefferson Avenue near Denbigh ... you know ... in the heart of the socio-economic center of the city, formerly known as waaaay out in the sticks of Warwick county). Have to get me some, cuz one can never have enough Crab stuff around the house (hush,
Dave Whitley ('67 - of VA) .... I just know you have a comeback to that!).

Oh, GOODY - I can hardly wait!

Speaking of HHS stuff ... last Friday at the American Red Cross "Dress Down Under" fundraiser at Mariners' Museum ... I bought an item in the silent auction that now has a home in the Hampton collection ... an Oakland Raiders football autographed by Ronald Curry (HHS '98, UNC '02) who started as varsity quarterback all four of his high school years and set a lot of VHSL scoring records, was part of the 40 game winning streak (1995 - 1997), and helped the Crabbers win three state football championships in a row (1995 - 1997).

   WOWZERS!!!  Congratulations, Babe!

Now that I have 'crabjacked' a chunk of your newsletter .... I return you now to the Blue and Gold memory machine already in progress :-).

Babe

   Thanks, Tom!

Midnight in Moscow

(Soloviev-Sedoy)

Stillness in the grove, not a rustling sound
Softly shines the moon, clear and bright
Dear, if you could know
How I treasure so
This most beautiful Moscow night.
