Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Ahh - the merry, merry month of May!
BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwJLKdU50KE - Now Is the Month of Maying - The King's Singers
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_Is_the_Month_of_Maying:
Now is the month of maying is one of the most famous of the
English
Balletts, by
Thomas Morley published in 1595. It is based on the canzonet So
ben mi ch'a bon tempo used by
Orazio Vecchi in his 1590 Selva di varia ricreatione.[1] The song delights in bawdy double-entendre. It is apparently about spring dancing, but this is a metaphor for sex. For example, a "barley-break" would have suggested outdoor sexual activity (rather like we might say a "roll in the hay"). The use of such imagery and puns increased during the Renaissance.[2] The madrigal forms a key part of Oxford's May Morning celebrations, where the choir of Magdalen College sing the verses from the roof of the college's Great Tower... Hmm. Who knew?!? |

of VA - 04/29/16 - "NNHS 1965 site":
Carol, I am not far away but it has been quite a while since I last logged into your NNHS web site. I did so today just to see what people are talking about but did not see much activity with the newsletters? Unfortunately there were a lot of passings and looked at the first memorial for 1954 to see if I could do as I did years ago, provide names, dates, and places? Not sure if you would appreciate the help to be able to fill in the missing information?
Thank you so much, Eric!
Good to have you back!

But having lived in the country most of my life, with friends and loved ones several miles away, I have never had much of an opportunity to give them away. But today I am going to make up for all the missed May Day baskets in my past by giving all of you this sweet and easy little basket (at least the pattern for it)..." - with tutorial!

Composer:
Thomas Morley, 1595Based on a text used by
Orazio Vecchi in 1590Now is the month of
Maying,
When merry lads are playing,
Fa la la la la.
Each with his bonny lass,
upon the greeny grass,
Fa la la la la.
The Spring clad all in gladness,
Doth laugh at Winter´s sadness,
Fa la la la la.
And to the bagpipes sound,
The nymphs tread out their ground,
Fa la la la la.
Fie then! why sit we musing,
Youth´s sweet delight refusing?
Fa la la la la.
Say dainty nymphs and speak,
shall we play Barley break?
Fa la la la la.
