05/01/16 - NNHS Newsletter - Happy May Day!

The month of May was come, when every lusty heart beginneth to blossom, and to bring forth fruit;
for like as herbs and trees bring forth fruit and flourish in May, in likewise every lusty heart
that is in any manner a lover, springeth and flourisheth in lusty deeds.
For it giveth unto all lovers courage, that lusty month of May.

-   Sir Thomas Malory, Le Morte d'Arthur, ca. 1470
(ca. 1405-1471)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Ahh - the merry, merry month of May!

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwJLKdU50KE - Now Is the Month of Maying - The King's Singers

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_Is_the_Month_of_Maying:

Now is the month of maying is one of the most famous of the English Balletts, by Thomas Morley published in 1595. It is based on the canzonet So ben mi ch'a bon tempo used by Orazio Vecchi in his 1590 Selva di varia ricreatione.[1]

The song delights in bawdy double-entendre. It is apparently about spring dancing, but this is a metaphor for sex. For example, a "barley-break" would have suggested outdoor sexual activity (rather like we might say a "roll in the hay"). The use of such imagery and puns increased during the Renaissance.[2]

The madrigal forms a key part of Oxford's May Morning celebrations, where the choir of Magdalen College sing the verses from the roof of the college's Great Tower...

   Hmm. Who knew?!?

Now Is the Month of Maying

Composer: Thomas Morley, 1595
(1557 or 1558 – Oct 1602)

Based on a text used by Orazio Vecchi in 1590
(baptized 06 Dec 1550 – 19 Feb 1605)

Now is the month of Maying,
When merry lads are playing,
Fa la la la la.

Each with his bonny lass,
upon the greeny grass,
Fa la la la la.

The Spring clad all in gladness,
Doth laugh at Winter´s sadness,
Fa la la la la.

And to the bagpipes sound,
The nymphs tread out their ground,
Fa la la la la.

Fie then! why sit we musing,
Youth´s sweet delight refusing?
Fa la la la la.

Say dainty nymphs and speak,
shall we play Barley break?
Fa la la la la.
