From   Eddie Perry ('65) of TN - 04/29/14, 11:20 PM - "  Hilda Elizabeth Wright":

Carol,

With sad news, I must tell you of the passing of Hilda Wright. She was the mother of
Davis Wright (Class of '61),   Hilda Ann Wright (Johnson) (Class of '64) and Pauline Wright (Perry) (Class of '67). Mrs. Wright was a fine Christian woman, and was one of first three policewomen that the City of Newport News had (for that matter one of the first in the state of Virginia). She will definitely be missed. Her obituary will be in the Daily Press probably Thursday. The following is what will be published.

Hilda Elizabeth Wright went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 29, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband, Davis B. Wright, Sr., and 9 brothers and sisters. She is survived by 3 sisters, Betty Williams, Marjorie Pitts and Elizabeth Gayle; her son, Davis Wright, and wife, Patricia, of Lanexa, Va., daughter, Hilda Ann, and husband, Dr. Ed Johnson, of Knoxville, Tn., and daughter, Pauline , and husband, Ed Perry, of Knoxville, Tn.; 6 grandchildren , Kelly Walker, Bucky Wright (Dona), Walter Johnson (Margie), Lawrence Perry (Donna), Chris Perry (Star), and Eric Perry (Amanda); 17 great grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Logan, Cole, Mallory, Ridge, Melody, Sara, Zachary, Sam, Lauren, Will, Ella, Ensley, Anderson, Xander, and Emmy.

Hilda was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She retired from the Newport News Police Dept. in 1975 after a 21-year career of service for the City. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church for 72 years, since 1942, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, led the social committee, along with many more activities.
Receiving of friends will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church at 11 a.m., with graveside services to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Again, thanks for all that you do.

   Oh, Eddie, I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. Although I think I never had the pleasure of meeting her, your mother-in-law sounds like a very fine woman indeed.  Please give Pauline and the rest of the family my love and deepest sympathies.

  From Marty Whitmore McCoy ('67) of VA - 05/01/14, 6:37 AM - "  Pauline Wright Perry's Mother":

The obituary for Pauline's mother is below - please keep Pauline and family in our prayers.

Thanks, Marty

   Thank you so much, Marty; that we will do.

  My heart is saddened and full of Joy, my sweet friend is no longer with us, but she is now full of peace and with her Savior and Lord. What a sweet memory she leaves behind, a perfect example of God's love, always a smile, kind word, and deed. She will be missed by so many who loved her. What a blessing she has been in my life, so thankful God chose to have our paths cross in this life, but I know I will see her again in Glory. Love her family.

Pauline, as I told you at our last reunion your mom holds special memories in my heart as the crossing guard at our elementary school. I can still see her standing there helping the children cross the road. I am happy that she lived a full and wonderful life. The picture of her above made me smile. love to you and family, Jennifer Perkins Akers

Pauline, I looked forward to seeing your mom at the crossing for Jackson School. She kept a lot of us straight as she went about her duties and was smiling all the while. I remember her at Cavary Baptist where I attended with Bro. Albert Simms. A great lady and a great daughter!!! I didn't realize you were in Knoxvegas with Sharon! Love and God's blessings!

Mrs Wright was a true angel in my life as a young girl growing up in Newport News. I remember her from Calvary Baptist Church and she often gave me a ride home in her powder blue car with the swivel seat!! She was an incredible role model for me. I think of her often and am so grateful for the kindness and generous love that she showed to me. What a great impact she had on my life. Rest in peace, dear Mrs Wright and may many angels sing for you in God's kingdom.

Hilda was a school crossing guard and so was my mother. My mother thought a lot of her and spoke fondly of her. I hope they are together in heaven right now talking! May the Lord give you peace as you go through this sad time.

What a lovely, lovely women Mrs. Wright was and what a lovely family she and Mr. Wright had. Davis, Hilda and Pauline were simply fine people and were fine Christians as well. She was a fixture at Calvary Baptist church for years. Sadly we all mourn for her.

I was a rookie officer in 1973 when I first met Hilda. Someone mentioned her "kind heart" and they could not have described her better. I always admired those first women police officers. They carried themselves so professionally while doing a tough job. Hilda may not have realized it due to her humble and kind nature, but she set a fine example of what police officers should be. May she rest in peace. She earned her place in heaven.

Shall We Gather at the River

Words and Music by Rev. Robert Lowry (1826-1899)

 Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Chorus

Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Chorus

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

Chorus

Soon we'll reach the shining river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.

Chorus
