HAMPTON - Philip A. Abraham, 89, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Sentara Careplex in Hampton.

Mr. Abraham graduated from Newport News High School, and attended one year at the University of Richmond and one year at The College of William and Mary. He worked in the Newport News Shipyard as a plumber/pipefitter for a few years. He owned a kosher butcher shop for more than 30 years in the community and later worked with his two brothers as a meat cutter until retiring. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy; serving during WWII working as a signalman on a flat top in the Atlantic Ocean searching for German subs.

Mr. Abraham belonged to B'nai Israel Congregation. He was a member of the synagogue board and head of its House and Grounds Committee for 15 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Leah L. Abraham.

Survivors include a daughter, Rhoda Nachman and her husband, William; son, Ben and his wife, Janet; three grandchildren, Joel Nachman, Sarah and Jason Abraham; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2009, in the Jewish Cemetery of the Virginia Peninsula, officiated by Rabbi Gilah Dror and Rabbi Norman M. Golner.
