HEALTH UPDATES:

From My Friend,  Judy Cress Bowermaster (Litchfield HS, IL - '58) of IL - 04/29/09, 6:40 PM - "feeling better":

Hi Gang,

I saw the lung doctor  today and he said he thought Dr. McFarlin had me on the best regimen for asthma and he didn't change my meds at all.
Be ordered a blood test and an x-ray and if anything turns up there he will call me.
I see him in one month and he will decide then if I need to go to Springfield for allergy tests.
For now it is keep on doing what I'm doing.
At least it's not COPD like I was afraid it was.
So I guess I'll keep on keeping on and live my life like I know what I'm doing!

Love to all,
Judy

  From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 04/30/09, 3:04 PM - "   Monty (Phillips - '62 - of VA) update":

I won't see the surgeon until the first of next week, but he let Monty go home today.  I was surprised when he called me at school.  I left at lunch time and got him home and settled, dropped off prescriptions, etc., and called cousins to let them know so they could check in on him (they live closer than I do).  I made it back to school to finish up the day.

Monty is so happy to be out of the hospital.  I knew he was better 3 days ago when he started getting grumpy.  Anyway, he is happy.  I will keep you posted on further developments. He has a tough battle ahead, but he is happy at home.  Thank you for the prayers and please keep them coming.

Judy

Thanks for these updates, Judy and Judy!

From Harry Simpson ('54) of VA - 04/28/09 - "NNHS Class of 1954":

Dear Carol,

I want to "Thank You" for including the NNHS Class of 1954 Reunion after 55 years since our graduation on your 65 Website.  I received several messages of  sincere encouragement for our weekend.  That Reunion has come and gone now, and we had 75 people at our Saturday evening dinner.  It was indeed a very good reunion for us older graduates.  We are NOT going to wait 5 more years until our next gathering, but  we intend to try either a yearly mini-reunion or at least every two (2) years.  We TYPHOONS want to take care of each other !!

Thanks again,
Dr. Harry Simpson, 1954 Reunion Chairperson

Thanks, Harry - it's good to hear your weekend was so successful!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 04/29/09 - "Very moving video!!":

This came to me from a former co-worker.

You will be glad you watched it.

If you go to YOU-TUBE and search on this video title, you will find a longer version and other videos by this remarkable man.

Dave

Thank you, David! The YouTube path was my only choice for inclusion here - and it is quite poignant indeed!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 04/28/09 - "Random Tidbits":

On my way to a picnic, I stopped at a fast-food place to order a quart of potato salad. "We don't sell it by the quart," the clerk snapped. "Okay, then give me two pints, please," I replied.

I'm proud to say I held my tongue when she asked, "Do you want it in one container?"

RANDOM TIDBITS

Troll Capital of the World - If you've always wanted to check out the largest troll community in the world, look no further than Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. You can take a "Troll Stroll" down The Trollway, site of the country's largest collection of life-sized troll sculptures, which are carved into trees along the town's main drag.

                              ***

Cow Chip Throwing Capital of the World - In the tiny town of Beaver, Oklahoma, apparently all you need is a good throwing arm and some cow dung to have a good time. Every April since 1969, Beaver has hosted the World Cow Chip Throwing Championship to see who can hurl hardened cow dung the greatest distance. This event was established as a tribute to the unique natural fuel source of the town's early settlers.

                             ***

Cereal Capital of the World - Did you know that the birthplace of our favorite breakfast food is Battle Creek, Michigan. Visitors to the town can tour Kellogg's Cereal City USA, an interactive museum that pays tribute to cereal and shows its impact on our culture. Observe a re-creation of a cereal production line, meet your favorite Kellogg's cereal-box celebrities, and even buy a box of cereal with your face on it.

                             ***

Decoy Capital of the World - Havre de Grace, Maryland has been home to the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum since 1986. It features the country's largest collection of wooden duck decoys, most carved between 1930 and 1990.

                             ***

Loon Capital of the World - The northern Wisconsin town of Mercer, which boasts of more than 200 lakes within a 20-mile radius, features the world's largest loon. A 16-foot-tall, 2,000-pound fiberglass waterfowl has stood on the lawn of the chamber of commerce since 1981.

                             ***

Bratwurst Capital of the World - The first weekend of every August sees Bratwurst Days in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Connoisseurs come from all over to try some of the industry's newest brats, such as taco bratwurst, Cajun bratwurst, and jalapeno and cheddar bratwurst.

From Bill Black ('66) of GA - 04/29/09 - "Memories of    Susan Price ('68)....":

If anybody is still in touch with Susan Price, just tell her Bill Black said: "No big deal...  The judge only took my driver's license for ninety days.  I just couldn't drive all summer, but that was my John Yancey Summer, and I could walk to the beach... "

Yeah.. Susan Price.. How could I ever forget her?

  GIGGLES! Thanks, Bill!

From Charlie Snead ('64) of NC - 04/29/09 - "   Doug Nelson's ('64 - of VA) Recollection of     Miss G at an Assembly":

I had a sudden flash of    Jimmy Hines' ('64 - of Northern VA) rendition of "Hot Nuts" as he strolled back and forth across the stage during our Senior Assembly...she never knew what he was singing but was quoted as saying "that surely is cute" ...

Ahh, the good old days!

I had surely forgotten that one - thanks, Charlie!

From Cheryl Mays Howard ('66) of VA - 04/29/09 - "Folk song":

I remember well the song "Mary Hamilton". It was a regular song on my list that I sang. Seems like so long ago! Thanks for including it in your letter....

Peace & Blessing,
Cheryl

Thank you, Cheryl! It was on my "singing-song" list as well - one of my very favorites!

   From F.A. Saunders (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - 04/29/09 - "Folk Music":

Aw,! yes!! the good ole Hootenanny days, my kind of music.     Cheryl Mays (Howard - '66 - of VA) and I had a great time back in the late 60's playing folk music around the Peninsula. We were part of a group called the Folk Idea which met once a month and shared folk songs. We even put on a concert once at Benjamin Syms Jr. High and Cheryl was there with her lovely voice. I still have the tape recording of that concert. I teamed up with   Wayne Green (HHS 1960) to form the Shiloh Singers. We played many places around this area. Even played for the launching of the  tanker ship El Paso at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock in 1968. That was a hoot.   Dick Lamb heard about us and recruited us for his morning television show. We used to go over to WTAR studios on Sunday evening and record about 4 songs just before the 11 o'clock news. Dick would use them over the next couple of weeks and we would then go back and record some more. Even tried one time to do a live show with Bobbi Boecker, the exercise lady. Don't remember that going so well. Oh well !!

Sure would like to see folk music come back and I guess it will one of these days. I guess right now it's just Blowin' In The Wind.

  GIGGLES! Thanks, F.A.!

Blueberry Hill

Music by Vincent Rose, 1940
(1880-1944)

Lyrics by Al Lewis
(18 Apr 1901 - 04 Apr 1967)

 and

Larry Stock, 1940
(1896 – 04 May 1984)

I found my thrill on blueberry hill
On blueberry hill when I found you
The moon stood still on blueberry hill
And lingered until my dreams came true

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Were never to be

Tho' we're apart, you're part of me still
For you were my thrill on blueberry hill

The wind in the willow played
Love's sweet melody
But all of those vows we made
Were never to be

Tho' we're apart, you're part of me still
For you were my thrill on blueberry hill
