"One Way or Another" is a song by American New Wave band Blondie. Written by Debbie Harry and Nigel Harrison for the band's third studio album, Parallel Lines (1978), the song was inspired by one of Harry's ex-girlfriends who stalked him after their break up.[1] The song was released as the fourth single in the US as the follow-up to "Heart of Glass". "One Way or Another" reached number twenty-four in the Billboard Hot 100. Although never officially released as a single in the United Kingdom, the song charted there in February 2013. Rolling Stone ranked the song #298 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[2] The song was included on the US and Canadian versions of the band's first hits compilation, The Best of Blondie (1981), but not on international releases. Blondie released a manipulated live version of the song (with the audience noise removed) as the theme for the 1999 US television series Snoops. This version was released in the US as a bonus track on the US Live version of their album Livid (Live).[3] The original un-edited live version was included on the European / non-US Livid version...[4]

April 18th this year will mark the (74th) anniversary of the famous Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. I leave it up to you to report on the raid itself, but offer the following since I'm pretty sure your source for such abbreviated announcements won't include some NNS connections (below) which I am sure will be of interest to your readers....

		The so-called Doolittle Raid got started on December 21, 1941 when FDR expressed a desire that Japan be bombed as soon as possible to boost American morale following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The military quickly determined that it seemed possible that a medium army bomber (B-25) could fly off an aircraft carrier and do the job. Two were loaded onboard USS HORNET (CV-8) and secretly and successfully flown off on February 3, 1942 (at-sea recovery was not possible for that large an aircraft in 1942). Construction of the HORNET had been completed by Newport News Shipbuilding just a few months before, in October, 1941.
Army Air force Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle was put in charge of the secret project. Sixteen B-25s were modified for the over-water mission and then flown to Alameda, California. On April 1, 1942 they were loaded onboard HORNET and tied down as far aft on the flight deck as possible. All of the HORNET's aircraft were stored below, in the hangar bay.
		HORNET sailed westward the next day and met up with north of Hawaii with a task force that included the carrier ENTERPRISE (CV-6); built by NNS and delivered in 1938. Until the B-25s could be launched, ENTERPRISE's aircraft were the only air cover that could be provided to the task force as it approached Japan.
Tactical circumstances dictated that the raid be launched earlier than originally planned, several hundred miles off the Japanese coast. After the raid commenced, the carriers returned unharmed to Pearl Harbor to prepare for their next assignments. Their sister ship, the USS YORKTOWN (CV-5), was also there, having battle damage repaired following the Battle of the Coral Sea. YORKTOWN was the lead ship in that class that totaled three carriers - all of which were built at NNS.
YORKTOWN and HORNET were lost during later actions during World War II. ENTERPRISE survived the war, but was latter scrapped. Three other carriers, all built at NNS, carried on their names, and their aircraft carrier traditions. The second carriers to be named YORKTOWN, and the second HORNET are museum ships. The second ENTERPRISE, the first of a fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers built (and building) at NNS has now been in commission for almost 49 years.  The Doolittle Raid, as history analyses it, did little material damage, but did have some other benefits. But the news of the raid caused American morale to soar, and severely shocked the Japanese, which caused them to pull back some of their far-flung forces to defend their homeland. When the raid was first announced, a reporter had asked the President where the attack started. FDR responded "Shangri-La", which was the name of a mysterious place of supposedly perpetual youth in the Himalalas identified in the then-popular book and movie: Lost Horizon. Doolittle was later promoted and presented the Medal of Honor by FDR. In 1944, the Navy named one of its carriers USS SHANGRI-LA, in honor of the raid. That carrier was not built by NNS, but it was built to the NNS-created and super-successful ESSEX-Class design just across Hampton Roads at the Norfolk Navy Yard. Appropriately enough, SHANGRI-LA was christened by Mrs. Jimmy Doolittle.
On April 21, 1992, as part of the nation's 50th anniversary remembrance of World War II accomplishments, two restored B-25s thundered down the flight deck of the USS RANGER (CV-61) and took flight. You guessed it: RANGER was yet another of the many carriers built by the craftsmen of Newport News Shipbuilding. Now you know many (but perhaps not all) of the Newport News connections to the story of this historic event. Bill Lee
