Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
 
 I was very saddened to read the news of one of my classmates and fellow band members. Ernie Murphy, Class of 1965, husband of Nancy Horne Murphy ('65) of VA, and brother of Bill Murphy and Bobbie Murphy, passed away at home in Newport News on Thursday, April 05, 2018.

      NEWPORT NEWS - Ernie Murphy, 71, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2018, at his home.

He was born on May 19, 1946, in Newport News, Virginia, the son of Ernest L. Murphy, Sr. and Nathalie McDermon. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ernie was a lifelong resident of Newport News and a graduate of Newport News High School.

He served his country honorably in the Army followed by a 46-year long career with Newport News Shipbuilding.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Heather McElligott (Andrew); son, Sean Murphy; step-daughters, Stephanie Hautz (Allan), Shannon Weaver (Curtis); and step-son, Billy Weaver (Kristin); nine grandchildren, Kelsey Weaver, Hannah Hautz, Hunter Hautz, Preston Hudgins, Zackary Weaver, Riley Weaver, Jacob McElligott, Avery Weaver, and Carson McElligott; brother, Bill Murphy (Sherry), sister Bobbie Murphy; nieces, Tiffany Ward (Eric), and Shanna Murphy (Brian); five great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Orcutt Baptist Church, 653 Baxter Lane, Newport News, Va., on Monday, April 9th from 2pm to 3pm followed by a memorial service at 3pm at the church. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

Nancy and Family,
Our most sincere condolences to you and the family on the passing of Ernie. We went to high school together and grew up in downtown Newport News together. We had a lot of great times. May God Bless you and the family during this time. God Bless Ernie, and may he rest in peace.
