Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

   We have more sad news today. 


  From Buster Vest ('63) of VA - 03/31/06:

Orlando Caleb Griggs, class of '47, died this morning @ 11:38.  He was known by his friends & family as O. C.  He was the uncle of   Connie Dickson Mitchell ('67), who just recently passed away.  O. C. was also the step father of Buster Vest, '63, of Richmond, Eddie Vest, '68, of Hampton, and Donna Vest Hagerman, '71, of Newport News.  The family is receiving friends at Peninsula Funeral Home, Sunday, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be Monday @ 10:00 am at the funeral home with interment following at Peninsula Memorial Park.  He was surrounded by his loving family when he slipped away.

NEWPORT NEWS - Orlando Caleb 'O. C.' Griggs, 77, peacefully went to be with his Heavenly Father Thursday, March 30, 2006, with his loving family by his side. He was born June 2, 1928, and was a lifelong resident of Newport News. Known as O. C. to all his friends, he retired from The Daily Press composing room. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Japan Theater. O. C. enjoyed gardening, the horses, fishing and the Redskins O. C. was preceded in death by his parents, Orlando H. and Elizabeth Walker Griggs; his sister, Mildred Griggs Dickson; and nieces, Connie Mitchell and Elizabeth Weisspfennig. Survivors include his wife, Pearl H. Griggs; his stepchildren, William M. Vest and his wife, Jackie, Eddie H. Vest and his wife, Susan, and Donna V. Hagerman and her husband, Bruce. He is also survived by his very close grandchildren, (O. C.'s buddy) Bruce 'Rusty' Hagerman Jr. and his wife, Kelly, Allison Marie Hagerman, Amanda Kathleen Vest, Jennifer V. Frazier and David Deas; his great-grandchildren, Emily Nicole Hagerman, Auston Frazier, Alexie Frazier and Christopher Wolfe; a nephew, Joseph Dickson; and one great-niece, Lynnell Beauchesne. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home by Pastor Larry Lamb followed by burial in Peninsula Memorial Park.

I knew O. C. when I was a young copy editor at the Daily Press. He was a never-ending source of help when I did not get my page designs correct back in the "dawn" of the computer age at the newspaper. He always worked with me as a fellow professional when I was just a rookie.
