Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Again we have more sad news to deliver.
From the Daily Press - 03/28/07:
William
'Bill' Corss Thomas
NEWPORT NEWS - William 'Bill'
Corss Thomas, 95, went home to be with the Lord on March 23, 2007, after a
short illness. He was the son of Clarence and Lola Thomas and a native of
Newport News; although he resided his last three years in Culpeper, Va.,
near his grandson, Tom Smith. Bill was the Dock Master at the NNS & DDCO for
26 years until retirement after a near fatal hunting accident. He attended
ODU for a year pursuing engineering. In 1937, Bill graduated from the
Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School where he was the president of the
student body, he was on the football and track teams and played saxophone in
the band. He also lettered in all sports and music at Newport News High
School. As a volunteer, Bill worked in CBN's mail room for 17 years and was
a founder of New Covenant Church in Hampton, Va. Bill was the beloved
husband of the late Vernelle Courtney Thomas. He is survived by his son, W.
Courtney Thomas; and his daughter, Mary Byrd Thomas Smith Martin; three
grandsons and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at
noon Friday, March 30, at New Covenant Church on Big Bethel Road (from I-64,
Exit 261A). Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, is
handling the arrangements. |

My wife, Annette, and I shared a Sunday seating location at New Covenant Church with Bill and Vernelle for several years. I will remember Bill as an encourager to others, always an infectious smile, a warm greeting and an interesting story. I feel blessed to have known Bill and Vernelle and to have witnessed the joy they shared with others. |

Our sincerest sympathies are extended to the Thomas family at this time.
From Fred Mays ('60) of VA - 03/28/07:
Carol:
I recognized the picture of Bill Thomas in the morning paper. His reputation certainly went before him as I knew of him being a fine, committed Christian. I figure he must have graduated from N.N.H.S. in 1928 or 1929. A friend of ours, Virginia Nicholls, will be 94 on July 6th and she graduated in 1930.
Thank you, Fred. I had picked 1930 as his year of graduation, because my father was born in 1907 and graduated in 1925, but your estimate is a better one.
Y'all take good care of each other! TYPHOONS FOREVER!
Love to all, Carol

Nearer My God to Thee
Words: Sarah F. Adams, 1805-1848
Music: Lowell Mason, 1792-1872
1. Nearer, my God, to thee, nearer
to thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
2. Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
darkness be over me, my rest a stone;
yet in my dreams I'd be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
3. There let the way appear, steps unto heaven;
all that thou sendest me, in mercy given;
angels to beckon me
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
4. Then, with my waking thoughts bright with thy praise,
out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise;
so by my woes to be
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
5. Or if, on joyful wing cleaving the sky,
sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly,
still all my song shall be,
nearer, my God, to thee;
nearer, my God, to thee, nearer to thee!
