Baby Elephant Walk

“A camel makes an elephant feel like a jet plane.”

 - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
(28 July 1929 - 19 May 1994)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme suggestion came last night from my husband,       Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - which was a very good thing, I must say, because I could think of absolutely nothing!

   Thanks, Paul!

BONUS - - Baby Elephant Walk - Sequence from Hatari!,1962

"Baby Elephant Walk" is a tune written in 1961 by composer Henry Mancini, for the 1962 release of the movie Hatari! The composer combines brass instruments (including repeated blasts from the tuba) and woodwind elements to convey the sense of a toddler that is large and plodding, but nonetheless filled with the exuberance of youth. The catchy, jazzy simplicity of the tune has made it one of Mancini's most popular works, prompting its appearance on nearly twenty later compilation and best of/greatest hits albums. As the album review states, "if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy 'Baby Elephant Walk,' which has gone on to be musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. Get this tune in your head and it sticks."

1.  Bud Leonard (Warwick HS - '60) of VA - 03/21/10 and 03/22/10 - "Web Site Still Up":

Enjoy visiting your site when I have a free minute and have been unable to find it of late.

Do you have a new web site/URL?

Thanks -- George Leonard WHS ‘60

Hi, George! Yessir, 'deed we do!  It's now found at

As a result of the recent switch, there are now literally thousands of broken links within its pages.  Oh, joy.   In the likely event that you land on one before I catch it, you can solve the problem by deleting the characters ".00freehost" from the URL bar and hitting "Enter" once more.

If you'd like to join us on a more regular basis, I'd be glad to add you to our misnamed alumni pages, and send you regular announcements:

We'd love to have you with us!  Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for the update on your new site location.  Yes, please include me on your “misnamed” alumni pages even though I’m a “Farmer.”

Particularly enjoy references to TJ and Walter Reed Elementary Schools and possibly seeing mention of whereabouts of Walter Reed classmates Claudia Steele, Mary Ann Edwards, Phil Turner, Billy Cox, and Bernie Cohen, among many others.  And surprised there is no mention of the Orrsville basketball and football teams that played at the rec center and gave so many guys their first organized sports experience.

Visiting site from time to time is a real treat!  Thx again – George “Bud” Leonard/WHS ‘60

Thanks so much, Bud! Welcome aboard!

By the way, although the five people you mentioned are not on our regular subscriber list, we have images of at least a couple of them posted on the site:

Mary Ann has a lovely beach home in Ocean View, and shares it from time to time with her classmates:

The subject of Orrsville does arise from time to time (though rarely have I figured out just what to do with it  ); some mention of it may be found here:

From Mike Fordham ('66) of FL - 03/22/10 - "    Chip Clark ('65 - of Northern VA) picture on 3-17-10 newsletter":

Hi Carol ------

I just got your new address from    Joe Wingo ('65 - of NC) this morning and have been scanning some of the dates that I have missed due to your change of servers.

On the 17 March newsletter there are pictures taken of the Beacon News room by Chip Clark . The last picture lists the fellow as   Kim Lassiter ('65 - of OH) and has a question mark for the lady. I’m 99% sure that she is my sister,    Robin Fordham, class of 1967. She married   Danny Crockett ('65 - of FL) and had 3 boys. She has been living in Florida for many years now.

Robin Fordham ('67) and
Kim Lassiter ('65)

Thanks, Mike Fordham.

Thank so much, Mike! I'm 99% sure we figured that out long ago. Hmmm. I wonder why that was never changed on the site?!? It must be that slacker Webmistress again.....

Well, it's fixed now! Give Robin our love!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 03/22/10 - "Buckroe":

I was in Hampton today, in the Buckroe area, and decided to stop by the beach. It has been many, many years since I have been there. WOW! What a change. When I saw the old light house the memories came flooding back. From my earliest memories, up to my late teens, they came back. Tried to explain to my son where everything was. Some of the happiest days of my life are from time on that beach. I have included a couple of shots...

Jerry Blanchard (Class of 62) of Va.
   AWW, Jerry!

I was downstairs watching Episode 2 of The Pacific (Basilone) and I didn't cry. I thought - repeatedly - of our       Darling Herbie (Hice) (22 Oct 1924 - 18 Apr 2008) and I still didn't cry (which for me is rare indeed). Then I came upstairs and saw these two images of yours and I lost it - lost it completely.

Monday, March 22, 2010

That must make some sense on some level to somebody, but I'm not sure it does to me.

   Thank you so much, Sweetie!

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 03/22/10 - "MYSTERY ENTRY; CHECK BACK NEXT TIME!":

SHHH! This entry of Bill's is waaay cool, but my brain seems to be waaay out lost in space, so we'll get back to it next time!

Thanks so much, Bill - sorry for the delay!  ‹(•¿•)›

  From Mike Fordham ('66) of FL - 03/22/10 - "  Mickey Spivey":

Carol ------

I just read the 3-14-10 newsletter and see where    Bridget Whitt Jones ('65 - of AR) asked if you knew the whereabouts of Mickey Spivey.   Terry Haney ('66 - of VA) and I had breakfast with Mickey Spivey Tuesday, 16 March in Titusville, Florida. Mickey has been living in Titusville for over 20 years. He looks great.

Mike Fordham

Thanks again, Mike! I knew Mickey had been living in Florida for a mighty good while, but I couldn't recall the name of the town. I do love hearing of all of y'all visiting whenever the opportunity presents itself!

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 03/21/10 - "Socorro, NM event - New post on Civil War Hartys":

What to do when really bored...

1. Kill a few flies

2. Put them in the sun to dry for one hour.

3. Once they are dry, pick a pencil and paper... Let your imagination flow.

Here are a few examples...

  So do I! Thanks, Gorgeous!

From ArcaMax Jokes - 03/22/10:

Sea Level

Working on a cruise ship, I was demonstrating to a group of young passengers how the ship manages to stay level at sea.

Do you know what level means?" I asked my 6 to 8 year-old charges.

One boy replied immediately.

"A level is something you need to pass in a video game to get to a harder screen."

In school one day, a teacher asked my six-year-old son why his handwriting wasn't as neat as it usually was.

"I'm trying out a new font," he explained.
