03/22/16 - NNHS Newsletter - May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You

I found you and I lost you,
All on a golden day,
But when I dream of you, dear,
It is always brimming May.

 - Paul Laurence Dunbar

(27 June 1872 - 09 Feb 1906)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I was needing to hear the soothing sounds of Jim Reeves today.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_the_Good_Lord_Bless_and_Keep_You:

"May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You" is a popular song by Meredith Willson, originally published in 1950.

The song is now considered a standard, recorded by many artists.

It was used as Tallulah Bankhead's theme song for her NBC radio program, "The Big Show." She recited the words in her ultra husky voice. The show featured many of the big stars of the day, and they would join Tallulah in reciting the words, one line per star, which made a memorable ending for the show.

However, it was most popular when it was regularly sung by Kate Smith on her early 50's TV show as the closing song. (Kate Smith enjoyed her own personal renaissance in the 70's when the Philadelphia Flyers (Pro Hockey Team) asked her to sing God Bless America at their most important games.)

A recording with Eddy Arnold, The Tennessee Plough Boys and his Guitar was made in New York City on December 13, 1950. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-0425 (in USA) and by EMI on the His Master's Voice label as catalog number MH 148.

From Mike Lindsay (Menchville HS - '83) of Northern VA - 03/21/16, 2:26 PM - "Obit in Daily Press":

Carol,

Hope you are feeling better and enjoying some spring weather in Fayetteville. We actually had some SNOW Saturday at our home in Winchester.

I thought I’d pass along the attached obituary from the Daily Press. Pat was Warwick ’58 but I thought some of your readers may have known her or her parents. They were the longtime owners of E&E Auto Parts on Warwick Boulevard (near Dean and Don’s Produce). The business was a NN fixture for decades. It always looked forlorn and run down but was actually a very lucrative business—--a regional Motorcraft distributor (the Ford replacement parts).

My lovely wife is from the Roanoke area but has a whole Newport News side of the family of whom Pat is one of the last ones. My small world story is that Pat’s parents lived about a mile away from us in Denbigh and my family knew them or knew of them a good 20 years before I ever knew Becky. AND, my late great aunt and uncle, Atlee and Gracie Harris, lived two blocks away from them and had to have known them.

We went to the funeral Friday—drove down that morning, did the funeral thing, had lunch, and drove back to Winchester. Had something we had to be back for that evening.

Anyway, thought I’d pass it along. Take care and get well.

Best,
Mike

  Patricia Parker DiCarlo

1940 – 2016

Condolences

NEWPORT NEWS - Patricia Parker DiCarlo, 75, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016.

She was born on July 22, 1940 in Newport News to the late Edward G. and Edna N. Parker.

As a lifelong resident of the Peninsula she graduated from Warwick High in 1958 and was an owner/operator of E & E Auto Parts.

Pat enjoyed traveling many parts of the world, being on the water, and spending time outdoors.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Terry of Grafton, VA; her son, Douglas DiCarlo of Palm Harbor, FL; one grandson, Zachary Huck; three granddaughters, Josephine Huck, Camille DiCarlo, and Emily DiCarlo; and one great grandson, Enzo Huck.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at the Amory Funeral Home in Grafton, VA.

Funeral services will also be at the Amory Funeral Home beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016, followed by a burial at Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association, 9702 Gayton Rd, 110, Richmond, VA 23238, lungva@lunginfo.org.

Thank you, Mike! While I loved your small world story, I'm so sorry for your family's loss. You and your family have my deepest sympathies.

From the Best Dressed Girl in the Class of 1959, My Sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky of NC - 03/21/16 - "The Cousins":

You know all the fun we always have laughing and giggling together when       Cheryl (White Wilson - James Blair HS / John Marshall HS - '64 - of VA) comes down to visit? You should get well so that we can do that again real soon!

EXACTAMUNDO! Thank you, Eleanor! This shot says it all! The fact that it is a bit out of focus simply adds to it!

From My Daughter, Adrienne Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL) of NC - 03/21/16 - "Nathan Mitchell - How Will God Interview Parents?":

Nathan Mitchell ...  makes a valid point. I'm only sending this to ya because it's him, not trying to send some hidden meaning or whatever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewpt93TTsGY

Thank you so much, Webby! Nathan Mitchell made me cry like a baby, but his sister, Courtenay, is one of my favorite people on earth! I didn't realize he was a counselor as well as an actor.

And by the way, I do adore all seven of you!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 03/21/16:

An MIT linguistics professor was lecturing his class recently.

"In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. However, in some languages, such as Russian, a double negative remains a negative. But there isn't a single language, not one, in which a double positive can express a negative."

A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."

May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You

Words and Music by
Meredith Willson (18 May 1902 – 15 June 1984), 1950

[As recorded by
Jim Reeves (20 Aug 1923 – 31 July 1964) on "Songs to Warm the Heart", 1959)]

May the good Lord bless and keep you, whether near or far away.
May you find that long-awaited golden day today.
May your troubles all be small ones, and your fortune ten times ten.
May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet again.

May you walk with sunlight shining and a bluebird in ev'ry tree.
May there be a silver lining back of ev'ry cloud you see.
Fill your dreams with sweet tomorrow. Never mind what might have been.
May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet again.

May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet ('til we meet),
'Til we meet ('til we meet) again.
