May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You

“The subtle beauty of this day
Hangs o'er me like a fairy spell,
And care and grief have flown away,
And every breeze sings, 'all is well.'.”

HEALTH UPDATES:

1. From My Friend, Judy, of IL - 03/20/09, 4:57 PM - "health":

I went back to the doctor today and the pneumonia is gone but the asthma attack is one of the worse I have had in many years. He gave me a cortisone shot in the office and then I'm on 6 breathing treatments a day, 20 mg. of predisone 3 times a day for 5 days, then 2 times a day, for 5 days and then 1 a day for 5 days, codeine cough syrup, cough capsules -plus all the stuff I always take! AND I have to go back on Monday for a re-check.

If the rest of 09 is like March I'm NOT going to play! I'll be over in the corner picking my nose!

2.      From the Head Flagtwirler of 1965, Janice McCain Rose of VA - 03/20/09, 5:53 PM - "Friday evening":

Today was a good day for Fred....he came off the respirator and his numbers are looking better. He was also given two units of blood to help build up his body.  He really can't talk now.....and they don't want him to talk any time soon....his vocal chords are still swollen and that causes problems when he tries to swallow.

The doctor wants NOTHING in his mouth for a few days...not even to swab his mouth, gums, or teeth....so the whole learning to swallow from the speech therapist will start again after his lungs have cleared and the swelling subsides on the vocal chords.

He still has all kinds of IV's....potassium, magnesium, insulin, sodium,...there's one more but I forget what it is.  He is still on the feeding tube and is still on oxygen...which they will try to wean him off that also.

He definitely looked better today....and I cleaned him up as best I could and shaved him...he really liked that.

My update tomorrow will be late evening......I have things to do in the morning and don't expect to be at the hospital until around 2-3 pm.....and I'll stay as long as I can.

Right now they only want me to visit with him to INSURE his rest.

love to all....Janice

3.   From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 03/21/09, 2:35 PM - "  Monty (Phillips - '62 - of VA) and    Jerry (Allen - '65 - of VA) update":

Greetings friends and family,

This past week has been interesting to say the least.  A lot of life's lessons have been confirmed.  The main ones are: "you can do what you have to do as long as you just do it", "God will help you through it", and "friends and family praying for you provides the insurance policy".

Monty's liver scan went pretty well, but the results are not yet known.  His biopsy scheduled a 10 AM was bumped up to noon due to emergencies.  Then it was cancelled due to unfavorable blood work results (clotting factors).  I took him to see the gastroenterologist in the afternoon.  He ordered more blood work and said that he would get him in next week for an endoscopy.  After I took him to IHOP for some food (he had not eaten and it was almost 5 PM), I took him home.

On the way home, I stopped at Riverside Hospital to pick up Jerry who was being discharged after two days of x-rays, CT's, EKG, echocardiogram, bloodwork, ultrasound and MRI.  I had taken him to ER after picking him up at work on Wednesday.  He had symptoms that could have been signs of stroke.  When all was said and done, the verdict is TIA.  He was very tired on Friday, but much better.  We did enjoy a wonderful dinner celebrating 3 birthdays--Cookie's, Richard Marshall's and our daughter, Kelly's. Now, he has a cold which he got in the hospital.  Today, we are taking it easy.  He is still pretty tired.  We did go to Cracker Barrel and get brunch.  That is one of his favorite spots. It is a beautiful day and we enjoyed getting out, but I think we will both take a nap now.

I called Monty and he is having a good day.

Thanks again, everyone.  Love and prayers for Janice and Fred.  Hang in there!

Judy

YOWZERONI-WOWZERONI! Thanks for these updates, Judy, Janice, and Judy! We're still praying!

PREVIOUSLY:

From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA - 03/13/09 - Saunders Stadium":

Carol,

My brother Charlie (Phillips - '65 - of TN) was home last week.  He was leaving Monday 3/9 to go home.  But when he heard the stadium is slated to be demolished on the 30th, he stayed until 3/10.  He so loved his track years at NNHS that he felt compelled to take these pictures.  The Pinkerton guard actually allowed him on the track and took the picture of him.

He also visited Coach Nuttycombe for several hours.  We are certainly saddened to know our great high school is slowly becoming only a memory.

YOWZERS-WOWZERS!!! Thanks, Cookie and Charlie! I've added these 25 new images here:

FINALLY:

   From Butch Ragland ('63) of CO - 03/12/09 - "Have a Giggle (#7 in a series of 13)":

Hi Carol!

Glad you are settling in to your new home!

After hearing me complain about my doctor getting on me about losing another 10 pounds my wife sent me the attached email for future excuses I can give him!

Have to admit I never thought of these and may use them next visit, when I know I will have probably gained another 10 pounds.

In case you need some newsletter filler sometime, I included the "Herman" comic attachments also!

Hope you enjoy them, and thanks again for keeping us in touch with our glory days.

Best to all!

May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You

Words and Music by Meredith Willson, 1940 OR 1950 (unverified)

(As recorded by Jim Reeves on "Songs to Warm the Heart",1959)

May the good Lord bless and keep you, whether near or far away.
May you find that long-awaited golden day today.
May your troubles all be small ones, and your fortune ten times ten.
May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet again.

May you walk with sunlight shining and a bluebird in ev'ry tree.
May there be a silver lining back of ev'ry cloud you see.
Fill your dreams with sweet tomorrow. Never mind what might have been.
May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet again.

May the good Lord bless and keep you 'til we meet ('til we meet),
'Til we meet ('til we meet) again.
