When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

“If you smile when no one else is around, you really mean it.”

 - Andy Rooney

(14 Jan 1919 - 04 Nov 2011)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

We're continuing with our Irish themes today - mostly because I'm still in the mood.

BONUS #1 - - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Bing Crosby

BONUS #2 - - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Dennis Morgan - from Tear Gas Squad (1940)

BONUS #3 - - When Irish Eyes Are Smiling - Celtic Woman (Méav)

"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" is a lighthearted song in tribute to Ireland. Its lyrics were written by Chauncey Olcott and George Graff, Jr., set to music composed by Ernest Ball, for Olcott's production of The Isle O' Dreams, and Olcott sang the song in the show. It was first published in 1912, at a time when songs in tribute to a romanticized Ireland were very numerous and popular both in Britain and the United States. During the First World War the famous tenor John McCormack recorded the song.

The song continued to be a familiar standard for generations. Decades later it was used as the opening song on the radio show Duffy's Tavern. The song has been recorded on over 200 singles and albums and by many famous singers, including Bing Crosby, Connie Francis, and Roger Whittaker.[1]

His blood pressure is normal and he is expecting a complete recovery. He said to tell everyone thanks for the well wishes.    If all goes well,          Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC) and I are planning to leave here Thursday night (March 21) to drive out to Missouri to pick up        our daughter, Adrienne (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL / American School, IL - of NC) who will be completing her eighteen-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Seattle, Washington.  She will be flying into St. Louis on Tuesday, March 26.

We'll visit some with family in Missouri and Illinois, and at the moment we're thinking of returning home by Friday, April 5.

My access to the internet will probably be non-existent during this time, so we will miss celebrating the First day of Passover, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and the Last day of Passover together this year.

If y'all could watch the obituaries on the Daily Press for those two weeks and send any relevant obituaries to me, I'd really appreciate it, as I doubt I'll be able to locate them upon my return.  Any volunteers??

   Thanks so much!

Several of y'all have been hit by hackers lately.  You know the drill: even if an email is from someone you know, if there's no subject given and there's nothing but a link to some nonsense in the body of the note, chances are excellent that they've been hacked.  Don't open the link or attachment, and report it to your spam filters.

   "Let's be careful out there!"

From Wayne Agee ('58) of FL - 03/18/13 - "Shag Dancing (WOW) This kid is phenomenal - Fred Astaire, Jr.":

Couldn't remember if I had sent this to you or not but it brought back good memories....

Shag Dancing (WOW) This kid is phenomenal - Fred Astaire, Jr.

Usually the female is featured, but here the young man steals the show - his legs are like liquid magic. God bless her heart, she lets him shine. He's 17 and she's only 15. But together, they won the 2012 Junior Division National Carolina Shag Dancing Championships.

They're dancing to Joe Turner's "Flip, Flop and Fly."

WOWZERONI-RINI! HOW'D-HE-DO-DAT?!? Thanks so much, Wayne! No, you hadn't sent it to me before; I'm quite sure I've never seen ANYthing like that - including Fred Astaire!

From My Friend, Tina, of NC - 03/18/13 - "Aspartame":

Thank you, Tina! We ran a whole string about this a couple of years ago, and the arguments seem to be equally strong on either side. I'm running this today just for fun; if you find yourself not feeling up to snuff, give up aspartame for a couple of weeks and see if you notice any change!

From - 03/18/13:

Little Pete came home from the playground with a bloody nose, black eye, and torn clothing. It was obvious he’d been in a bad fight and lost. While his father was patching him up, he asked his son what happened.

“Well, Dad,” said Pete, “I challenged Larry to a duel. And, you know, I gave him his choice of weapons.”

“Uh-huh,” said the father, “that seems fair.”

“I know, but I never thought he’d choose his sister!”

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

Words by Chauncey Olcott (21 July 1858 – 18 Mar 1932) and George Graff, Jr. (05 Aug 1886 - 24 Jan 1973), 1912

Music by Ernest Ball (22 July 1878 – 03 May 1927), 1912

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
There's a tear in your eye, and I'm wondering why,
For it never should be there at all.
With such power in your smile, sure a stone you'd beguile,
So there's never a teardrop should fall.
When your sweet lilting laughter's like some fairy song,
And your eyes twinkle bright as can be,
You should laugh all the while and all other times smile,
And now smile a smile for me.

When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure it's like a morning spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter,
You can hear the angels sing.
When Irish hearts are happy,
All the world seems bright and gay.
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
Sure, they steal your heart away.
