Sleep Deprivation Blues

“I'm always without sleep. I've got two kids. I understand
sleep deprivation on a profound level.”

 - Cate Blanchett
(b. 14 May 1969)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

In case you didn't notice, you lost an hour's sleep last night, and you're gonna spend the next six to eight weeks trying to acclimate your mind, soul, and body to the whole nastiness.....

Knowing I was going to lose an hour's sleep put me in a bad frame of mind, and I couldn't fall asleep.  Knowing I had to awake at o-dark-thirty left me sleeping fitfully, and I awoke twenty minutes before my alarm sounded at 5:30.  I think I may have only had three-and-a-half hours sleep, but I'm not sure.

Back in 1955,        my daddy, the late Robert Buckley (John Marshall HS - '25) (19 Oct 1907 - 25 Apr 1960) brought home a delightfully funny 45 record.  Some of the early lines of the lyrics came forcefully to my mind this morning:

"I always did hate like the dickens,
When I had to get up with the chickens,
I'm a guy that really likes his sleep."

This is the best explanation I've heard yet!

AHA!!! This IS perfect! Thank you, Mark, I could scarcely agree more!

From Me ('65) of NC - 03/09/13 - "Daylight Savings Time":

I'll tell you how I feel!

From Mary Blandford McGehee ('62) of LA - 03/07/13, 12:18 AM (but only just discovered) - "  Peck Family":

I just went to your NNHS website for the first time in a while, and saw the announcement of
Andy Schaffer Peck's ('65) mother's passing, and that Andy herself had passed away in 2008.  I didn't know Andy at NNHS, but when she and her family moved to Baton Rouge some years ago, I taught her son Bryan at the Laboratory School in Baton Rouge.  He was a wonderful young man!  When I first met him, he told me he was from Mississippi--because in fact it was from Mississippi that they had moved to Baton Rouge.

During that first year that he was in my class, in a discussion of everyone's "past life" someone asked me where I was from, and when I said Newport News, Bryan revealed that he was in fact from NN, and we talked (in French) about his mom being in my sister's class, and about how he had come to be in Baton Rouge.

Small world, and I am so sorry to hear that his Mom, Andy, had passed away, and now his grandmother, too.

Do you know by chance where I could send a card to Bryan?

Mary McGehee
class of '62

WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI! I love small world stories! Thank you so much for sharing this one, Mary!

I don't have contact information for Bryan, but I think I know who does!  I'll forward your note to    Malcolm and    Polly Norris Davis ('both 65 of VA)!

From Joe Madagan ('67) of FL - 03/07/13 (but only just discovered) - "Famous Marine Pages":

Hi, Carol:
Thanks for updating the Famous Marine pages on your website.
Bobby Hilling ('62 - of VA) was a "Squared Away" Marine. Nice addition to your pages, Web Wizard.

Marine John Harrison ('58) of GA, who had the special duty of serving as the Marine Orderly for Commander, Carrier Division Two, is another "Squared Away" Marine. He was born in Newport News, VA in the year 1940...but I do not have the month and day...but I bet he will provide it to you when you ask him. Just know how much you like to have each entry complete as possible!!! Right???

Semper Fidelis,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

That's absolutely true, Major Madagan! There are those who say that's because I have such a case of OCD, but I prefer to think of it as setting a higher standard of excellence!

   Oh, J.....

Thank you again for the promptings, Adonis!

From Butch Ragland ('63) of CO - 03/09/13, 7:18 PM - "Famous Marines":

Hi Carol;

I certainly hope you are feeling better now; you have had me a little worried lately!

As an FYI I tried to look at the Marines Section for M-R today and wasn't able to enter that section.

Thanks & God Bless,

Good to hear from you as always, Butch!

The M-R page is just this - left over from the early days when there was only one page of Famous Marines instead of five or six (or in other words, I never finished doing what I started out to do...):

I really need to rework those.....

You are still doing well, yes??

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 03/09/13, 12:32 AM - "At the World Baseball Classic in Chase Field in Phoenix":

USA is down to their last inning and losing 5-2 (to Mexico), but I'm still having a good time with (old friends I hadn't seen in twenty years).

WOWZERONI! That's SUPER! Thanks, Brent - glad you're having fun!

From Butch Ragland ('63) of CO - 03/09/13, 10:04 PM:

I am doing very well! Was evaluated Wednesday for my new leg, and will have a mold cast on 3/19/13. Thus far things are really starting to look up! As for the m-r Marine section I am still amazed how you manage to keep with all of us! You do a wonderful job.

I will check that section on Marines later.

Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC) hello and take care of yourself. Hope to see you guys later this year if I can get the hang of my new leg.

God bless you both,

     SUPER-DE-DUPER! Thanks so much, Butch!

From My #2 Son, Brent Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '90) of TX - 03/10/13, 1:45 AM - "RE: 03-08-13-NNHS-In-the-Mood.html":

Nice stuff as always, Mom. Keep up the great work for all your classmates. I'm glad you enjoyed MCAS Cherry Point and ogling all the Marines there. They had a decent gym there. The rest was...well, I'll just stop my comment there! I enjoy Ft. Bliss a whole lot more! With love...
