03/06/13 - NNHS Newsletter - Yakety Yak

Sometimes when I'm talking, my words can't keep up
with my thoughts. I wonder why we think faster
than we speak. Probably so we can think twice.”

- Bill Watterson
(b. 05 July 1958)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This silly song makes me smile - and it always has!

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cHB3Rbz1OI - The Coasters

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakety_Yak:

"Yakety Yak" is a song written, produced, and arranged by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for The Coasters and released on Atlantic Records in 1958, spending seven weeks as #1 on the R&B charts and a week as number one on the Hot 100 pop list.[1] This song was one of a string of singles released by The Coasters between 1957 and 1959 that dominated the charts, one of the biggest performing acts of the rock and roll era.[2]

The song is a "playlet," a word Stoller used for the glimpses into teenage life that characterized the songs Leiber and Stoller wrote and produced.[3] The lyrics describe the listing of household chores to a kid, presumably a teenager, the teenager's response ("yakety yak") and the parents' retort ("don't talk back") — an experience very familiar to a middle-class teenager of the day. Leiber has said the Coasters portrayed "a white kid’s view of a black person’s conception of white society."[2] The serio-comic street-smart “playlets” etched out by the songwriters were sung by the Coasters with a sly clowning humor, while the screaming saxophone of King Curtis filled in hot, honking bursts in the up-tempo doo-wop style. The group was openly theatrical in style—they were not pretending to be expressing their own experience.[4]

The threatened punishment for not taking out the garbage and sweeping the floor is, in the song's humorous lyrics:[5]

"You ain't gonna rock and roll no more,"

And the refrain is:

"Yakety yak; don't talk back."

This is real quick.....

Smarty Pants Test

Hope you have fun with this.....I did.

For All Of Those Who Know EVERYTHING - and You Know Who You Are.....

Here is a test for you!!! This is fun. Moves VERY fast!!

Smarty Pants Test

When it says you only have 8 seconds to answer the question, they aren't kidding !  Re-taking the test mixes up the questions so you can't gain anything there.

This is VERY FAST, so be prepared. You only have 8 seconds for each question.

Have fun.

http://www.flashbynight.com/test/

WHAT?!? I scored 20 (the average is 18.1). The testers therefore reported that I was "10.5 % smarter than average" (but warned me not to let my brain overheat). I don't like speed tests even when I'm "up to snuff" (which I'm not yet), and I made several really silly mistakes, so this made my day! Thanks, Joan!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 03/05/13 - "WHAT A PHOTO!":

THE STORM WILL PASS !

The photographer caught this special moment. What a privilege to see.

Reminds me of Psalms 91:4:
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

There is absolutely nothing to fear about tomorrow;
For God is already there..

Thank you so much, Haul Party!

Actually, the first scripture which popped into my mind was Luke 13:34:
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

From Wayne Agee ('58) of FL - 03/05/13 - "Reaching the Winter of My Life...":

I don't feel my age most days (thank goodness), but this email really rang a bell. Very thought provoking with its many truisms. Speaking for myself only, I have so much more appreciation now for life and the people I love and wonder about all the years I spent rushing around treating life as if it was a "to do" list --- I still do that somewhat, by the way! Old habits are hard to break. But I'm more conscious of my actions and try not to take anything for granted any more.

Wishing you all a wonderful life, for the rest of your life........... Wayne

AND THEN IT IS WINTER

You know...time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams.

But, here it is...the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change...not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.  Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore...it's mandatory! Because if I don't on my own free will...I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...its over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly.

So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

LIVE IT WELL!
ENJOY TODAY!
DO SOMETHING FUN!
BE HAPPY!
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Remember, "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver."

LIVE HAPPY IN 2013!

LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN,
YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE
SO, ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.

~Your kids are becoming you...but your grandchildren are perfect!

~Going out is good. Coming home is better!

~You forget names...but it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!

~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything...especially golf.

~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.

~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".

~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch.

~You tend to use more 4 letter words..."what?"..."when?"...

~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.

~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless."

~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.

~Everybody whispers.

~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet...2 of which you will never wear.

~But Old is good in some things: old songs, old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!

Thanks again, Wayne!      Jack Nelson ('54) of Northern VA sent this to us just a few days ago, but it's so very poignant it bears repeating already!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 03/05/13 - "Burned Biscuits":

Burned Biscuits

When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed!

All my dad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that ugly burned biscuit. He ate every bite of that thing...never made a face nor uttered a word about it!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said, "Honey, I love burned biscuits every now and then."

Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your mom put in a hard day at work today and she's real tired. And besides--a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!"

As I've grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people.

I'm not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today...that you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!

We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

"Don't put the key to your happiness in someone else's pocket--keep it in your own."

So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burned one will do just fine.

And PLEASE pass this along to someone who has enriched your life--I just did!

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

"Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil--it has no point."

     Thank you again, Doodler!

Yakety Yak

Words and Music by: Jerry Leiber (25 Apr 1933 – 22 Aug 2011) and Mike Stoller (b. 13 Mar 1933)

Recorded by The Coasters,  1958

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor
You ain't gonna rock and roll no more

Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Just finish cleanin' up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night

Yakety yak (don't talk back)

You just put on your coat and hat
And walk yourself to the Laundromat
And when you finish doin' that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat
Yakety yak (don't talk back)

<chiefly sax instrumental>

Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip; he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain't got time to take a ride

Yakety yak (don't talk back)

Yakety yak, yakety yak
Yakety yak, yakety yak
Yakety yak, yakety yak

FADE
Yakety yak, yakety yak
